    10:05 is exactly what I'm looking for. It's a lightweight, weather-sealed camera that gives you APS-C dynamic range and resolution, filter threads (!), EVF, flash, articulating screen, and internal ND filter, all without the bulk of interchangeable lenses. I think it's perfect for hiking/backpacking. I shoot mostly landscapes while hiking, so I rarely need the shallow depth of field, and I don't often use the video features for anything serious, so I have no problems with the shortcomings of its lens and video specs. I still enjoyed the review, though. Thanks!

      @lw2978 3 роки тому +4

      I agree and it’s why I bought a used one a couple of weeks ago. It’s fantastic but a one trick pony, great daylight landscape pictures from a camera you can put a uv/protection filter on and then bung in a jacket pocket and not have to worry about it taking a few knocks.

    I am an owner of the G1X III and I am with you. On stills-side I‘m totally happy for my kind of using the camera. The handling is superb. But videoquality is disappointing, even when comparing with other cameras 1080p footage. But what you did not mention is the weathersealed housing. This is a feature that lacks on most compact-cameras, especially in combination with a large sensor, a flip-touchscreen and an integrated EVF. The built quality and handling of the camera is amazing. Nevertheless its not a camera for everybodys needs and its pricy. Thanks for this great hands-on field test!

      @edshotsdotcodotuk 6 років тому +2

      nolimbo was also going to bring up the weathersealing which is in my understanding pretty excellent. The previous G1X models didn't have APSC sized sensors either. They were 1.5in ones unique to just those cameras as far as I know. The G5X may have a Sony made 1in sensor so that might be close to a Canon APSC if it is backlit as well. What the G1Xiii has will be more detail (if the lens is indeed optimised for its sensor which it appears to be). These factors still result in the camera being best suited to travel/landscape work just a shame the guys didn't point it out. Does the camera charge via USB? Cos that would be another feather to its travel bow.

    • @N0Limbo
      @N0Limbo 6 років тому +1

      Yes, it does charge via USB!

      I didn’t know it was weather sealed. That’s great. That is something Fuji needs to implement in a future X100 body to make it a perfect travel camera.
      Regarding build quality, this camera is plastic correct? Or is it magnesium?

    • @N0Limbo
      @N0Limbo 6 років тому

      The camera body feels so solid and valuable, that its not easy to say. But I do think its plastic. I tried to find out some information about the material on the official german (I am from Germany) website. Nothing about this! When searching for informations about the weather sealed body you have to go deep into the technical discribtion. It hides under "further Informations"... Canon hides one of the outstanding features ... Can't understand that!

    I’m now sold on the idea that these camera companies hold a monthly meeting to ensure nobody creates the perfect camera. I mean when I saw that thing had a hot shoe and an articulating screen all I was left to ask was. Is there a mic jack? It would’ve been revolutionary for vloggers such as myself. But no probably some guy from Sony had to put his foot down so the RX100 M5 can still make sales.

    • @fireandbloodexotics9807
      @fireandbloodexotics9807 6 років тому +2

      Fred Fonacier III id pay 999 or 750 open box right now for the rx100 5 all day especially with the features it offers over this 1600 dollar camera that is your typical featureless canon...canon is betting on its dpaf and color science alone to sell cameras and it isn’t enough...now if there was a mic jack on this then it would be diff but they couldn’t even give us that for $1600 smh

    • @MrKikoboy
      @MrKikoboy 6 років тому +3

      Seems like the SL2 would do all this and more ( interchangeable lenses ) in a small body ( 50gr difference in weight) for half the price...

    • @okaro6595
      @okaro6595 6 років тому

      I think vloggers still are a relatively small market. Though what Canon misses is that their viewers might be a bigger market. I do get the idea of leaving a mic jack off. A compact camera is intended to me a single unit which is used as it without additions. Still I think it would be a good thing to include it in the top models.
      But Canon surely does intentionally leave out features in order to make customers buy more expensive products. This is typical for manufacturers that have a known fan base.

    I agree that 1700 Canadian is way too much. I picked it up in Korea for $1000 which I think is a bit more reasonable. You hit it right on the head when you said who you think the camera is for. I bought the camera to do the Pacific Crest Trail next year. An all in one compact with weather sealing(however much it is), an articulating screen, filter threads, good video autofocus, and an apsc sensor makes this a bit of a unique offering. The camera is getting a lot of undeserved criticism in my opinion.

      I've been looking at the G5X for a while. Waited until the G1X MIII came out so I could see if it was a huge amount better. I think the G5X looks better to, and for the price. G5X is underrated. Really does not look like the G1X MIII has a loot more to offer for some one looking for a small point and shoot.

    Your lens, sensor size, ISO math is correct. They just want to make APS-C compact body camera sounds good in marketing department. Even first generation G7X gives better numbers (when you calculate 35mm equivalent) than G1X Mark III and you can buy that camera used for 300 USD/EUR, which I did. 100mm equivalent (on G5/7X) makes difference when it comes to separating background and reach, not only compared to G1X Mark III, but also compared to RX100 series. Downside of 1" Canon cameras (G7X/G5X Mark I or II) is Sony sensor inside that makes pictures little bit lifeless compared to other large sensor Canon cameras. Photos from G1X Mark III are more pleasant, especially if you do not plan to develop raw.

    Nice review. Really liked the grade on this one. About the equivalency - if you put equivalent focal length on screen, you might also want to put equivalent F-stop so that people better understand what you are talking about, and that they don't have to search for crop factors and use a calculator. So, equivalent F-stops at 70mm equivalent are G1X III @ F5.6 (equiv. F9) vs G5X @ F2.8 (equiv. F7.6). So, G5X has shallower depth of field at that equivalent focal length, and receives more light - a bit more than 1/3 of a stop.

      True the Mk III is 1.6 crop. The Mk II was 1.95 and Mk 1 was 1.85 (4:3). The Mk2 did have faster aperture though but it was much bigger. The G1 X series began before there was EOS M. Now they decided to create a significant size difference between the G1 X and EOS M-series.

    Great review and fun to watch (as always).
    I think the remarks about the smaller sensors and brighter lenses on rival compacts are all valid points.
    what I am missing in the review is sharpness of the lens.
    The lens on the G5X is said to be somewhat soft whereas the lens on the G1X Mark III seems supersharp.
    What's your view on that?
    This also is pretty important to mention I think.
    Also, most other compacts are not water-/dust resistant. So other camera's will get dust in lenses and/or sensor somewhere down the line.
    This would seem like a major advantage of the G1X Mark III.
    what's your opinion on that?
    Please keep up the good work on these great and fun reviews!

    Seems like a Fuji X-T20 with the 18-55 would be a much better camera and even less expensive....and you can change lenses if you get bored of the 18-55 (which is an awesome lens by the way). Hard to understand Canon's thinking on this one. X-T20 is slightly bigger, but not much and has a lot that's missing from the Canon like 4K video.

      w8stral2 Sure, if that is one of the most important things for someone then this would be a great camera for those people. Personally, I would love to have a pocketable full frame camera that is fully weather sealed and has a built-in 20 to 400 mm F1.4 zoom lens :-)))

    • @okaro6595
      @okaro6595 6 років тому +2

      If you even consider those as options then the G1 X III is not the camera for you:
      camerasize.com/compact/#703.359,723,ha,t
      Yeah, slightly bigger: 73% more weight and over twice the depth.
      Ability to change lenses is not an issue on compact cameras. It is like wanting a motor on a bicycle.
      The main alternatives to this are the G5 X, the G7 X mark II and Sony RX100-series. This camera plays much for the imago of the APS-C sensor.
      If you put 27 mm lens then you would talk about similar size but without a zoom.

      @lithoum 6 років тому

      Hooked on Photography Hummm I don’t believe you can compare the G1X mark III with the Fuji XT20. The latter, especially with the 18-55, remains much bigger than you imagine in comparison with the G1X. It would be closer to the XT20 with the 28mm 2.8 pancake. Still the XT20 would remain thicker and would nit have the 18-50 mm range. The comparaison with a mirrorless camera is just not right. Also the G1X M3 has a weatherproof body, like the XT2 which is bigger and more expansive than the XT20. Do not underestimate the benefit of having such a small body weatherproof. It make an absolute difference with all the other cameras of its size. I used it in Thailand and in the snow (back in Belgium) and it did not say a wird of complain. An absolute amazing camera/lens combination (that is very well rated for its sharpness by the different magazines in US, Australia and Europe). When assessing these type of cameras we often forget to focus on those 5 major things that make all the difference: the weather sealing performances, the sharpness of the lens (not only the aperture), the size of the sensor (here the APSC provides for more DR than any of the 1’’ on the market) and the overall size of the body that contains all the above 😊.

    I fully agree with Chris - the APS-C sensor in the G1X doesn't makes sense at all as the f2.8-5.6 lens is the weak Point. If you use the G5X at 24mm f1.8 ISO1600 then it is f2.8 ISO4000 at the G1X. At the Long end it is even worse with f2.8 vs. f5.6 at ISO5000. So what is the Point of the G1X? Weather resistance, faster AF, faster Operation ok, but double the Price...???

    Late to the game looking at this review, and some 4 years later I would note that although there appears to be threading on the outermost portion of the barrel that fits a filter of around 37mm this is not the purpose of those threads. I believe that this was most likely a standard size barrel threading assembly they used to access the interior of the lens during manufacture.
    Canon support says there could be vignette if a filter is used, and an impact on the filter *could* damage the front element- it's that close with some filter brands.
    Canon does make but seldom advertises the LH DC-110 Lens Hood and Filter Adapter Kit for PowerShot G1 X MARK III. Best way to avoid scratching the lens.

  • @stevelink21
    @stevelink21 5 років тому

    Hey Chris. Nice review, however, as a 100% stills guy, this review seemed to play to the video capabilities (or lack thereof). Regarding your comparison to the G5, you forgot to mention that the larger APS-C sensor of the G1 mark III would allow for greater sharpness and detail retention in very large poster prints. As a primarily Fuji X-System (X-T3) landscape and product shooter, my main criterion for this "travel" camera is lens sharpness, detail rendition, and overall image quality in still photography, for when traveling to areas in which I prefer not to take my X-T3, i.e., very infrequent beach photography. This G1 Mark III seems to fit my criteria, and I understand is somewhat weather "resistant" as well! That said, if you have a better recommendation for my occassional foray to a beach/sand/ocean environment, please do let me know. Thanks!

Was able to get an M5 with 14-45 & 55-200 lenses, adapter ring and extra battery all in for less than the before tax price on this one. Maybe should have waited to see if there was a G5X M2 coming, but needed the smaller camera for an upcoming trip.

    Solved my issue.
    I was considering this camera or the Sony rx100 as my carry option when not wanting to use the dslr.
    But i now realize that neither is the answer and the best option really is the G5x Mk2.
    Great review. Very honest and straightforward. Best around by far.

      Jim bob: it is a shame that Ricoh does not produce any TTL flash for the GR cameras. That largely defeats the purpose of the leaf shutter, as not every photographer wants to shoot flash in manual mode 100% of the time.

    I have a G1x and the deep dynamic range pretty much the same as full frame. The landscape photos on the computer monitor looks like I'm looking through a clear window, incredible transparent feel. If you don't need bokeh effects or fast autofocus, big zoom range, or a smaller body, This kind of pocketable machine is excellent. No one will probably notice from the photos that the camera is so small.

    The G5 X is 36.8 mm at f/2.8 i.e 13 mm aperture. The G1 X III is 45 mm at f/5.6 i.e. 8 mm aperture. The aperture is same as the maximum background blur when measured on the focal plane so in this the G5 X or G 7 X is better. The G1 X III is good if you primarily use the wide angle.

  • @radiozelaza
    @radiozelaza 6 років тому +1

    for me it's Lumix LX10/15, and I usually shoot with bracketing when it comes for landscapes, so that greater dynamic range of G1X wouldn't even matter that much.

    When you really check how far the lens with lens cap protrudes when the Canon G1X Mark III is turned off, and when you know exactly where the battery is located, then you realize that they could have build a much bigger grip to fit a battery with a LOT of battery life in that camera, without making it much bulkier.
    I mean, who would pack any rather pricey compact camera without a lens cap on the lens, so, in this case, the camera is as bulky as its lens with lens cap protrudes.
    On top of that the Canon NB-13L is a rather old model of a rechargeable battery pack (like 4 years or even more), and there have been quite some improvements in battery technology since the 1st start of this model of Canon batteries.
    I have a Canon G7X that I intended to use for underwater photography with the same Canon NB-13L battery model, and that I bought with the Canon waterproof casing, but I quickly found out how limited it was (ultra short battery life, screen just not bright enough for underwater shooting, etc..., etc... ) ... in short, impossible to use for underwater photography. So I got a professional casing for my Sony A7 II to do underwater photography with a lot of satisfaction (the Sony A7 II doesn't have an extremely long battery life, but it's way way better than the Canon G7X for the job), and I wound up only using the Canon G7X with its casing on the kayak with my son, or at the beach, or just as a small and cheap (although it was expensive for what it really was) point & shoot camera to stuff in my pocket, and that's pretty much about it.
    Quite frankly it all looks to me as the new Canon G1X Mark III is just another EXPENSIVE TOY.
    And, as I'm not the kind to jump on every "new thing" shat by the industry, I just wait until something really good and competitive is being produced.

    Guys, i'm starting to think that you have a bias.
    Sincerely, none of you touched on the lens quality, far superior sharpness on the G1X III than G5X, the macro capabilities of G5X are nullified by the terrible lens performance, which i bet that even cropped the G1 can give better quality.
    Would like to see an animated graph showing the ISO vs lens aperture between the two cameras in terms of image quality and depth of field too.
    I would not buy G1X but the review felt almost like a "don't care about this camera" from the start.

    Hopefully canon will learn, just put everything in everything. Mic jack would have made this great.

    Really hoping next gen of canon will be great. Can only hope.

    I own a Canon 200D with Sigma 18-35 lens, I only do photography (no video). While I'm happy with the quality of the images, it is quite not a convenient combo to use because it is big and heavy and I'm traveling all the time. It is therefore necessary to somehow plan to make a photo session with a backpack etc. and the whole is really not discreet when you want to do street photography for example.
    It is not the type of combo you bring with you when going to the restaurant or stuff like that.
    I am therefore looking for a high quality camera that is versatile, but above all that I could have everywhere with me, for example to take improvised pictures in the beautiful streets of Tokyo or elsewhere, without being too much noticed.
    The main interest of this camera for me is to have aps-c quality sensor, with a quality lens, easy to carry and discreet.
    The best camera is the one you have with you they say

    Nice comparison. I am surprised that there are so few reviews of the G1X iii on the web. I have been waiting for a G5X refresh with the Digic 7and click / no click option on the manual control ring. Probably not going to happen. I love my G16 but want a pivoting touch screen. I do find it hard to justify the US $500+ difference in price between the cameras for my needs. Is the OVF the same on both cameras?

    Very interesting, the comparison with the G5X. I’ve been campaigning for a year for a Mark 2 that would have the same processor and sensor improvements as the G7X Mk 2, plus the essential mic input for vloggers. If space is the problem, get rid of the unnecessary remote socket (use the app!). Would be a nigh-perfect compact - 4K if you must, although I could live without it. I would buy one - and I have a M5!

    So what if I said, I want a fairly versatile camera for travel (mostly urban - city visits but some landscapes too) and I want small (I have traveled with my DSLR and mirrorless and I just don't want the bother. The smaller the better but the most important issue is image quality - I like to print some of my travel pics in large sizes. I know that the Sony RX1 or Leica's will likely have better quality but I'm OK with G1X iii price but that's about the limit (although there does seem to be a few RX1's used out there for about the same money as a new G1X iii). It seems like the G1X iii is it. When comparing the G1X iii to the G5X a dpreviews image comparator the G1X iii looks sharper. The G7X ii looks closer to the G1X iii for picture quality??? Am I missing something?
