For the next repair, use fiberglass mat for your first layer. Then alternate fabric/mat. Last layer should be mat because it's sandable. Fabric isn't sandable (you're cutting the threads and end up with a series of fiberglass "U" which have no strenght). You can add bondo or gelcoat before sanding to fill up the pinholes and low points.
If you want to use fabric only, you need to use epoxy. And a filler of sort at the end to have something to sand.
Fabric alone will delaminate with polyester resin.
Also, use PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) at the end to seal your resin or gelcoat from air so they cure fully. PVA forms a temporary plastic film you can wash off with water the next day. Otherwise the ouside layer of the resin will stay tacky and clogg your sandpaper.
    Cheers !

@@AndrewCamarata I would suggest you keep epoxy resin around the shop all the time instead of polyester. Epoxy resin is more expensive but it sticks to almost anything. Polyester is fairly limited. I have used a brand named “East System” for a lot of years and never had a comeback.

FYI, that's not a design defect with the GP1800. It's intentional. That's a racing ski, so the hull is really thin to cut weight. If you want a thick hull that you can beat on, Kawasaki makes the strongest one and they use gelcoat instead of paint. It would be a lot better for the way you ride.

@@timr86868 Not anymore. They started phasing out NanoXcel in 2021 for exactly this reason. With the exception of the racing skis, they're going back to traditional fiberglass because it's a lot more durable. The 2022 FX is SMC fiberglass now. The EX is SMC fiberglass with the exception of the EX-R and the JetBlaster.

Next time you fix it, use a waterproof body filler. When folks would try to fix their own body rot it would usually get worse, because the bondo absorbed moisture and kept it next to the metal. Fibreglass thing I saw a while back which is super useful. Cut up some 1" square of fibre, then pull it apart into just the threads. Mix that into a pot of resin and use that for the initial repair, like a paste. Then lay sheets over the top at the end.

Fiberglass is supposedly pretty hazardous to sand without good breathing protection.

I've taken to wearing PPE when sanding anything. Instead of always trying to determine if I should or shouldn't, might as well for the few minutes and never thinking about it again.

Sanding fiberglass without breathing protection WILL lead to seriously lung issues.
I had a friend who didn't listen when I told him to.
He's now on oxygen the rest of his life no more time out in his boat he fiberglassed several times.
The same with grinding or danding pretty much anything.
Out lungi have no filter capacity.
Sanding and breathing rust can actually kill you.
