    Don’t beat yourself up to much, shit happens. I use to be a independent field service mechanic. When your touching the amount of stuff that you are it’s easy to overlook something sometimes. It sometimes happens when we’re tired and being pulled so many directions. I used to have equipment pulled apart in the shop and then have to drop everything to make service calls. It was maddening!! I hung it up several years ago but kept my truck so to work on my personal equipment. Being a independent mechanic is nothing like working in a dealership or multi employee shop where you have a little more time to breathe, and other mechanics to bounce ideas off of. Keep doing what you’re doing, you’re doing fine!

    Updated camshaft does not use shim per parts bulletin PB00256. Early cams had damper and shim, then shim only, now cam pilot is sized so shim isn't needed.

      But having the shim on with the updated cam, could it be causing the tone wheel to be pushed out too far? And not be affecting the actual mechanical timing?

      No - the tone wheel bolts to the cam gear.

    I have run into many of the same problems with "who the hell designed this?" with the jet aircraft I worked on for years. I had to work with the "engineers" that designed the F-16 and when I asked them if they ever talked to mechanics that fixed these jets and they said no. No wonder.

    Watching from Australia. The anticipation waiting for the next episode is better than most TV dramas! Great methodology, knowledge, but also humility and humour. Reminds me of when I replaced half the components on my 70’s Holden and spent weeks chasing a problem that had it stalling every time I turned left - turned our to be a faulty brand-new ignition coil - horizontally mounted, it obviously had insufficient insulating oil in it, and turning left was exposing windings internally and allowing the HV side of the coil to arc to ground. Put the old coil back on - solved!

    Someone else mentioned that the spacer is not used with the updated cam. When you had it behind the cam gear it moved the tone wheel back out of alignment with the cam sensor resulting in erratic cam signal confusing the ECM. While the tone wheel doesn't mount with the bolt holes the spacer does and the space makes no difference when in the front, it does make a difference when behind the cam gear.

    • @trevormitson6026
      @trevormitson6026 6 місяців тому +2

      If I'm following you correctly...Warren, fitted the spacer behind the cam gear, (transmission side) not between the cam, and cam gear, and shew that it didn't actually affect the tone wheel in any way ..

    • @macbeth2354
      @macbeth2354 6 місяців тому +1

      Looked like the tone wheel still mounts to the cam gear face, fitting through the spacer (minute 12:30 or so disassembly).
      But I'm getting your point about the different measurements on the old vs updated cam.

    • @user-jn6cp8fn8b
      @user-jn6cp8fn8b 6 місяців тому +1

      @@macbeth2354 I think partial reassembly and then removing the cam sensor and looking in / sticking an inspection camera in to check the alignment is needed. It seems almost certain now that the tone wheel is not getting properly aligned with the sensor. Whether it's due to the current spacer, or possibly needing a different spacer or tone wheel to match the new cam.

    Hi there Warren. It almost looks like the new cam has been beefed up, so as to do away, with the spacer washer, in which case, fitting the washer could, space away the tone ring, from the sensor. Thing is, it ran initially, I think you said in an earlier vid, so the EGR valve is looking more of a possible answer. Good videos though, and fair play to you for posting. Warren,
    One thing to do, is unplug all the injectors and check the resistance of each coil. One could be shorted and pull the drivers down inside the ECM. I had an engine do this one time and caused erratic injection timing, and ultimately a no start. Had no codes as well. Was a Cummins engine though. Crank no start with no codes and no smoke.
    Once I found the shorted injector coil, I left that one unplugged, and the engine fired up.
    When you have cam or crank unplugged, it wont fire injectors, so you'll get normal cadence cranking.
    I feel your frustration, I really do. Shop owner myself.

And the younger group coming in rarely have any hands on experience with equipment or working on things. It doesn't look like it will get any better. And us older experienced engineers can''t catch all the serviceability issues and even if we do, we get overuled by managers who say thats a nice to have. Bigger flywheel housing costs more money so some manager with no hands on equipment experience probably nixed that because of extra cost!!!

I did work as a tool ,and die machinist , automotive and heavy equipment mechanic (much like Warren's work, but thankfully got out just before all the electronics and emissions BS really came to the forefront), engine machinist / builder, and machinery / industrial / manufacturing machinery designer / builder for many years and can say many mechanical and industrial engineers I worked with had never learned or attempted to repair anything in their lives. The audacity and narcissism most engineers exhibited while defending their poor design choices and process decisions when called to explain why things didn't work / fit or couldn't practically be serviced or repaired was venomous. Once whatever design work had left their desk, trouble stemming from their lack of care and foresight was always someone else's fault / problem further down the stream.

    Great work man.
    As a service tech, the more difficult a repair job is, the more I learn from it.
    It's not fun but it is usually the case.

    Warren, I admire your education, your experience, and your work ethic. Part of my career was in a one-man shop (mine) repairing wood reduction equipment, and I can feel you when you come against something like that ISX not starting. When something like that happened at my place, it always seemed to happen as other jobs were piling up. I know that you will discover the problem and we will hear that ol' girl start, but right now, man, what a PIA. Take care of yourself best you can.

    Warren, we haven’t heard any sling blade in awhile, I’m guessing you start talking to this Paccar the right way with a lawnmower blade in your hands it’ll submit!😂

    All credit to you Warren for filming the problems mechanics have to deal with. When things don't work you waste so much time second guessing what you did to try and figure out what happened. Plus being self employed you end up working for free. You do an awesome job. Keep up the good work mate.

    At least you know it is nothing you had previously done and by tearing it down you can rest assured it is nothing to do with timing, so that’s off the table for consideration, now its on to the next possible issue and from the sounds of it you may have it worked out. Wish you the best on this Warren, been in service industry and it can get god awful frustrating when you hit a wall with a problem and can’t get it worked out. Stay the course young man,it’ll come around, thanks for the video and the honesty.

    anyone who does this for a living knows what this guy is going through. You just hope the customer has the same understanding. Some jobs just go to the dogs. Warrens coveralls have more mechanical experience than most mechanics. I can't believe he's taking the time to video and post this on youtube it would be the last thing I'm thinking about.

    G'day from Australia Warren. I love your vids and respect your above average ability. I have watched your stuff for years. I watch with headphones. I need to point out that sometimes your videos seem to only play sound through 1 ear. I'm no techie and have no idea why. The only reason I mention this is it has caused me to not watch vids on occasion. I figure this may be costing you views. I will continue to watch regardless, and I'm only writing this to help not to complain. All the best.

    On a different topic, Warren sets the camera and the light perfectly each time. That’s a lot harder than it looks. I know because I’ve tried on me work.
