The game itself being free is sort of a given considering what sort of bureaucratic hell Kay would have to go through to make Holocure an officially licensed product, but the fact that he explicitly refuses to even set up a patreon is baffling to me. Holocure has grown far beyond a Hololive fan game (we're at a point where Vampire Survivors, the godfather of the genre, is taking inspiration from Holocure for new game mechanics) and it's almost frustrating that I can't monetarily support such a project.
I'm sure he could have worked with Cover to split the revenue with them without too much difficulty, even if it meant he got a very small cut, but even if it was as little as $1, that would be enough of a barrier for many people not to try, which goes against what he is trying to do.

the reason Kay refuses donations or Patreon is because he wants to keep this as a hobby, as a passion project. when money enters the equation then its going to stop being a hobby and start being work. Holocure has Cover's blessing. i mean he is able to release it on Steam. now to release a game on Steam you have to own the IP for the game. Holocure is a fangame that uses the Hololive Productions IP which is owned by Cover. so under normal circumstances Kay would not legally be able to release it on Steam even if its free. so yeah want to clear up the misconception that the only reason it isn't monitized is because Cover's Guidelines for Acceptable Fanworks requires it to be free.
He's a pretty high profile key animator for some big properties so ideally they pay him at least enough for some sake to drown out the voice that haunts him in his sleep. "Next update please."

Id say a whole ass video game with years of development definitely deserves to be named. Not to put down animation as a medium but video game development is a lot more intensive. That's why Holocure being a passion project is a great decision. Being paid to do updates could make him think that this is one of his jobs and it'd pile up in his list. As a passion project, he can work on it whenever he wants and when he does, the love and passion shows, and people would understand if the update would be late compared to other updates since Holocure is a passion project.

It's not really the devs fault, most of the time, management doesn't give them enough time. Crunch is especially bad in this industry. If anything blame the higher ups for bad planning or their completely short-sighted view on profit

But still not even one mention that he’s related to the project is such a chad move and really does show that it’s purely a passion project.

They had to get Cover's approval to be on Steam. Hololive has a reputation of letting who they hire cook. It was after Kay Yu worked with Hololive that his passion grew.

In an era of 60 dollar priced, fully locked down games with broken launches, broken promises and paid gacha elements, this game is truly a blessing of the gods.

Kay-yu really worked on Strive and River City Girls with Arc system works, and is also one of the main developer's of Holo-cure and also part of the Onimai staff, and he acts like is not a big deal Man is everywhere

Kay Yu is unfortunately busy. Last time I checked, he's an in-house animator at Studio Bind and also works freelance on other anime projects.
