- Before arriving in the UFC after a trade in 2018, Ben Askren was considered one of the top MMA fighters outside of the promotion. Some UFC fans were not familiar with him or his career. Slams are overrated. The head has to get hit and even then it has to be on the correct spot and take most of the impact. Go get slammed and find out.
That fight should have been called he ate 20 shots to the face after the slam. Seen other fights get called for less. Only reason it didnt was cause askren had hype coming in. He had a horrible ufc carrer. Almost as bad as his boxing career. Which the youtube guy thinks is something to brag about. Beating askren at boxing is like beating mike tyson in chess.

Ben, a scramble heavy wrestler, went against the one of, if not the, most accomplished BJJ guy in the UFC. Nobody wants to grapple with Maia. Everyone tries to avoid it and escape. Ben had a lot of great scrambles with him and good positional fights but if Maia gets your back it’s usually done. He’s a legit back specialist. All things considered i thought he had a decent run in the ufc especially after the hip replacement and coming off retirement.

Tbh, I feel like if the knee hadn't landed and Ben had gotten his hands on Masvidal, he would have ragdolled him worse than Colby and Usman lol. Ben's no striker but he's a world class wrestler.
Wrestling ain't that effective when you have nothing to mix it up with. +, in MMA, anything higher than HS wrestling is cool and all but not needed as those techniques needed at high level are worthless in MMA. For the most part anyway. Obviously the grind needed to make it there is useful. But it's not really the grind that separates them at that point. Yeah, he wasn't gonna beat Masvidal. Lawler? Sure. Masvidal? No.

And he got finished by Charles and beat by Justin. He’s definitely not *bad* but not really that great. He’s good, but really just shines because he’s entertaining.
I remember the build up to the Askren-Maia fight and wildest thing I heard is that Demian was gonna have the striking advantage in the fight. Those 2 guys are the poster children for the superiority of a grappling base in MMA.

I wish we did the same for wrestling as it would help get more eyes on our sport as well.
