- Pets can be our best friends but designing our homes around them can be a challenge. Having pets has been shown to contribute to our overall health and well-being providing opportunities for exercise, connection and, for children, learning responsibility. But they come with needs, innate behaviors and stuff that can present some tricky design challenges. So let’s take a look at them and what we can do to make the best choices.

We have a cat tree with washable beige fabric beds and hammock. The cat tree itself is made of birch wood like our bookshelfes, our tables and everything else made of birch wood. It is placed next to our library wall to help our cats go upon the bookshelfes. They love to climb them when we have guests to feel secure.
In the kitchen is one side designed for them to climb as high as possible.
And in the children's room they love their "hammock", a piece of fabric over the toy store. We ensured they can climb the wardrobe and bookshelfes there as well if our little one is too wild for them.
And of course they love to lay down under the beds. 😊
Our curtains are washable, too. The couch looks like leather. We have different cat beds on the floor and the window with the same colours and style, but different kinds of them.
We have a long board on the balkony railing where the cats can sunbath and look out for birds - and watch our postman. 😉

Great video! I have hardwood and ceramic tile flooring which is easy to keep clean, but a challenge to elderly pets. I had to incorporate "pathways" of throw rugs to enable my senior dog to navigate the home because he couldn't maintain traction on hard flooring.

Thank you for this video! I've taken to choosing my colour palette from the coats of my rescue cats but that's particularly challenging when there is more than one and there are a wide range of fur colours in the house! Just a caution about blinds: they do work very well but if there is a long dangling cord it can be irresistible and dangerous to those who love to go for a "swing". And cats love to dig their claws into those woven natural mats so those would be shredded in very little time. Perhaps that's not always a challenge but I'm an environmentalist, in addition to being an animal mother, and work hard at being at curtailing unnecessary expenditures on such items. Also the pull out drawers for food and water require a locking mechanism as paws and faces/ heads can be pinched if they move unexpectedly. Having read some of the other comments I now have some new ways to incorporate fun and storage, so thank you! And to those designing and building homes and condos, please include room for animals as they do make life so much better!

If you have cats, stay away from leather. Velvet sofas is the way to go. I know this from personal experience.
Stay away from natural fibres for rugs. Jute, sisal and wool invite dogs and cats to mark their territory. Silk is too delicate for our 4 legged pets.
I have backup supply of sheer curtains for the bedrooms. Once in a while my cats get the vertical zoomies. So l replace my sheers usually once a year. Amazon has affordable and budget friendly sheer curtains.
