Thank you, Alex, for creating this video. My family and I once stayed at the Del around 2002. My kids were young and we went search for ghosts at 3am. We didn’t find any, but we still talk about the adventure. Thanks for the memories
It's absolutely miraculous that it's still standing. Everything else like it from the time burned down long ago. I've only visited once, and had a drink in the bar before touring the grounds and walking the beach.
@@AlextheHistorian Yes! I lived nearby on my sailboat, in Fiddler's cove. I only went to the hotel the once to entertain a visitor from out of town. I never got to the restaurant over the bay, the Bluewater Boathouse, on the other side of the street. It's built to match the hotel. I always figured it would be too expensive.
Since I live close to San Diego and driven by this place many times but never stopped buy. This my friend was a fantastic video. I have to say you did a great job and it was great to learn even more about this place. Thank you for sharing.
Good video, glad to see the hotel getting due attention. I've had the pleasure of working on this hotel, and can say that it is only getting better! Check back in a couple years - you'll be glad you did!
The famous movie "Somewhere In Time" (set at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan) is based on the novel titled Bid Time Return by Richard Matheson. In that novel, all action takes place here at Hotel Del Coronado. Excellent video (as usual)!!! Many thanks Alex 👍🙏
Whenever I feel dumbfounded by just how technically, creatively, logistically skilled people were over 100 years ago (much less the economics), I have to remember that the Great Pyramids of Egypt were built over 4,000 years ago. Also, never say never. When jet travel soared in the 1960s, I'd never have predicted that a huge ocean liner like the Queen Mary 2 would be built in the early 2000s.
I went to school with a kid of the family who’s father was the general manager of the hotel Del Coronado in 1986. I remember taking a field trip and walking in the underground tunnels.
Wonderful video. I learned a lot about this magnificent hotel. Thank you, Alex. This beautiful hotel with such a rich history is honored perfectly in this video.
Oh. The Del. I fell in love with The Del not too crazy long after I did the same with Queen Mary. The Travel Channel was very affective back in those days. Some Like It Hot also sparked it on all the more. I didn’t realize how many other films she starred in, though…besides Baywatch. Lolz. Privileged to have visited it but once back in my high school days. It’s a shame another iconic place and structure was built off the gentrification of a certain peoples. The things important to know while still appreciating the thing itself. I really know very little, so every little detail is always enriching.
Alex, the image at 4:56 is amazing. Notice the 4-4-0 steam locomotive. Alex your videos exponentially improve, from your narration, research and editing. Such a long way from the one man/one phone Disneyland videos.
I was at this hotel during its renovation Im so sad they removed the original elevator because they didn’t have a operating guy for it like ITS SO EASY JUST MOVE A LEVER 😭😭
Hey Alex! I just wanted to make a video request. The Château Élysée Hotel in Los Angelous California. All the videos I’ve seen miss out on a lot of details and make it seem like a cursed building. I would love to see your take on the hotels fascinating history.
Fun to see the interiors. Its a beautiful place. I'm glad its still standing 😊
Me too! I hope to visit the hotel one day
@@AlextheHistorian I've been by it but never actually been to it. I hope you get to go see it sometime and film it for your channel :)))
I’ve stayed there! It’s a fabulous hotel, and I look forward to staying there again. After I stay again at the Queen Mary. Very well done Alex!
Thanks! I hope to stay here one day...but boy the prices sure reflect its title to luxury lol
@@AlextheHistorian yes, I agree
I’ve stayed there, too. It’s an amazing hotel, but it definitely has eerie feeling to it.

I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Excellent video, as always. So glad it is still standing and able to be enjoyed.
Thanks! Yeah I hope to visit it someday
Awesome video alex well done
Thank you! This one took me quite a while to do.

Excellent upload, I remember reading the ghost stories of this hotel. So glad it is still around.❤️
Thank you!
Alex, a very well-done tribute to a beautiful American Icon. Thanks.
My pleasure!
Alex you are my favorite US historian 😊
Oh wow, thank you!
Wow, what an amazing place!
I live close to Hotel Del what a beautiful stretch of land! What an iconic hotel! Another great video you put together thanks!
Great video! I haven’t stayed there but I have brunch there on Saturday morning in 2006. The hotel was beautiful and the food was delicious. 😊
Wonderful documentaries. I love your subject choices.
Thank you!

Another beautifully researched, beautifully orchestrated presentation, Alex. Absolutely delightful.
Thank you!

Thanks Alex. I never know what you're going to do next but I have seen this place many times and now I know more about it! Cool!
Yeah I want to see this hotel for myself sometime!
I was there back in 1987 when I visited my brother who was in the Navy. It was like going from 1987 to 1927. It was Beyond Gorgeous inside.
A masterpiece in timber very interesting building thanks Alex.

It was certainly a fascinating story to research!
Yay! New video!
Surprise!
Beautifully presented. I have never been there or seen in person and I had no idea of it's scale...amazing! PS I have been to the Parker's Lighthouse
Wow thx for this video, I’ll add this to my bucket list !!
Lol it's on my bucket list too!
Alright I want to see it now. It's a lot more than the old massive hotel I thought it was.
They also have a museum and they do guided tours of the hotel and museum!
wow Grand Hotel very nice to see and learn about it
What a beautiful place… I’ve never been there but I’ve been to Parker’s many times in Long Beach! Great video!!
Thanks!
Great Video.
Thanks!
The Crown Room at the Del has a fantastic Brunch!
So cool! I have been to see the Hotel Del Coronado.
Nice, did you like it?
This beauty, built in a year?! remarkable.
All Disneyland, 1 year.
All of EPCOT, 3 years
A crappy revamp of one tiny fraction of Communicore? 4 years.
Alex, the image at 4:56 is amazing. Notice the 4-4-0 steam locomotive.
Alex your videos exponentially improve, from your narration, research and editing.
Such a long way from the one man/one phone Disneyland videos.
Thank you! Yes I told all my friends about that locomotive when I was restoring the photo.
@@AlextheHistorian Again, another fine watch...............
Another interesting video in a good series
Thanks!
One of my favorite places in the nation
Wow. The tent city looks pretty neat. Of course we have tent cities now all over California, but they certainly don't have any sense of style....
Congrats on 70k Alex!
Thanks Ken!
I was at this hotel during its renovation Im so sad they removed the original elevator because they didn’t have a operating guy for it like ITS SO EASY JUST MOVE A LEVER 😭😭
They didn't remove the elevator, it's still there and hotel guests can use it. All they did was get rid of the attendant.
@@AlextheHistorian Oh I thought they took away the elevator and added a modern lift but using the same cage
I think there were definitely upgrades to it, like new motors and an automatic door, but it's still the same.
Grrat video, and details
Thank you!

YEA............ FIRST...............
Sweet!
well great im here rn
Not bad; it's ironic an expensive hotel was built on a garbage dump of an island.
I've stayed here and didn't feel a thing and Im a sensitive!
