Been blowing through your videos... You know how when you get older you think to yourself " man in i could go back in time and tell younger me what i know now"... Well by no means am i young but what you have done for me and my players is enriched our games and our lifes with your time tested shortcuts tricks and tips. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. May your rolls be 20's 👍
If you’ve got the space, make a variety! Sometimes you want a game with more literally defined space, and sometimes you don’t. UDT 2.0 would be great for a lot of FATE games or other RPGs where combat is a little more abstracted, or a scenario like the Minotaurs Maze from a couple videos back in this series. I just did a scene with my kids where they chased a pig through the woods, and a flocked UDT 2.0 would have been perfect! In other games, the strategy is all about positioning. I’ve got a D&D encounter that is an ambush by a ranger and a rogue assassin, both on horseback armed with long bows. I’ll probably play it on a 4’X4’ game board, and it will have a more war-gamey feel.
Another possible tip for UDT: (as you mention on this video) I bought a very thick poster board and covered it with a slow curing epoxy paste and textured it very quickly with a roller from greenstuffworld when firm. Then I used a ruler to cut a grid into the firm paste. To paint it, I just used a dark spray primer and drybrushed some stone colors on to it. And voilà. I like the harder surface that cured epoxy offers. Congrats on 100 videos!
I added a round table top from Home Depot to my lazy Susan, so the surface area is about 2x the size of your board. The round room is going to work out great as it will have an outside and an inside! I have made 6 maps so far, forest, desert, air/water, cobblestone, underground, underdark. Thanks for the great ideas.

Dan, Ive been running games since 2nd ed (I'm 49) and I have to tell you that your advice and channel are thee best out there. I've never watched the same youtube videos so many times, ive taken notes on your ideas and after running a 15 month Curse of Strahd campaign RAW, the scalability in this version is out of control! I'm starting a sea faring/pirate themed game in a few weeks (Oct 2019) and will be using your ideas for, what I'm telling my players is a "middle/dark ages" version of the Forgotten Realms; a "prequel" of what your official D&D Beyond 1st level will become. Thanks so much for your efforts and advice. Sam.
I love that you left the outtake of your son ❤️. I have a 2 year old and a 9 year old and although frustrating at times, they truly are special moments.
XPS is AMAZING for making terrain. Black Magic Craft knows his stuff, too. Sturdy stuff, yet carvable and shapable, holds paint well. Fun stuff making all those stone shapes too, if you have an afternoon to kill.
For texture, just for fun, I tried one of those "sea anemone" dryer balls, just using my palm to roll it around in concentric circles all over the board... worked awesome. The trick is to only use minimal pressure for light texturing (like weathered stone), or a heavy hand for truly pock-marked and pitted texture (like the floor of a Tinker Gnome's Laboratory.) The more you repeat-roll over the surface area, the more random, and better the texture. You can sparsely texture for light weathering, or increase the density of the pitting marks as you like. Experiment, and have some fun. For my first go, I made a really awesome heavily weathered stone texture on my monolith pieces for a Stonehenge layout. I made it look like they were chipped out of living rock using flint tools. My players thought I had spent a lot of time knifing each tool mark. The truth was really depressing. ;oP
@@ulrich_VH Sure, just look them up on google, or any other search engine. I imagine Amazon has a few for sale. If you can't find them, follow this link: www.simplygoodstuff.com/dryer_magic-dryerballs.htm You can find them in any dollar store.
We cannot wait for the next 100 episodes either. My 5 year old and my 3 year old are much the same, but I started my family way late, not when you apparently did. I am thrilled to become one of your patrons and created an account. Thank you for 100 episodes of fantastic content. This dungeon terrain is perfect for anyone using your custom rules, and I would urge anyone using theater-of-the-mind to move up to this scenery. I have been collecting the supplies to make my own set of 1.0. I absolutely get behind this scenery. This perfectly suits the rules that you advocate. Again, nothing to nitpick here. Great work.
I only had Elmer's glow in the dark glue (with glitter) on hand... And now, with the glitter, it looks like slick NY subway stone. And it glows! Thanks Prof. Dungeon Master, this came out great!
That sort of abstract encounter area is an awesome way to mix minis and theater of the mind. I have done something similar but with out any terrain. I really like that your bringing the lazy Susan back.
Been watching your videos for the past year and taking notes to modify my house-ruled Third Edition D&D game. You also inadvertently introduced me to the OSR with references to the works of LotFP, DCC, and Tracy Hickman's XDM in these videos. I've taken the plunge and subscribed to your channel with this 100th Episode. Thank you for for your contributions to our hobby. You may never know how many gaming tables have improved because of your efforts here on UA-cam.
Really looking forward to UFT 2.0. Made my first a few weeks ago and love it. Unfortunately I’m working tomorrow during the live feed but I’ll catch it late. Congrats for number 100. This is my favourite channel and the ultimate advertisement for rpg
Your Thursday posts are by far my favorite part of my weekly entertainment. Always informative, enjoyable, and excellently presented. Thank you for all your work!
I was also just about to embark on making my own version #1. Now I'm going to make it double-sided. Side 1 - classic grid, Side 2 - new zoned. So really the ultimate, ultimate dungeon terrain :)
Made a solid start on it last night. I found the foam to be a bit hard to cut (I have the 1", it's more crumbly/flaky than I expected). UDT #1 side fully-gridded. UDT #2 middle rings drawn, final outer ring to go. And just joined your patreon. Good stuff!
UDT is the best, it isn't that hard to innovate your ideas and I love that. I'm considering making several of different kinds. (Dungeon, Grass, Mars, Moon, office building, Sifi, etc etc.) (Office for cyberpunk)
Professor, congrats on the 100th episode. Really enjoyed every episode except one...the ending of Game of Thrones as we haven't watched it yet, so I'm deferring that watch till then. Love the UDT second edition, it really looks good. Looking forward to the next 100 episodes. Thanks again for all your efforts and sharing your experience. Cheers!!
It does look amazing. And for the system you use, I'm sure it's fantastic. But I run grid based, so I think that original UDT is perfect. Thanks for this (and the original too!) though. It's great to have options.
I'll never use your minimalist near/short/far circular board, but I definitely liked your detailed commentary on how you made and painted it. Looking forward to your next 100.
I just finished my UDT 1.0, and now 2.0 comes out! Curse the relentless march of technology! Will I have to install new drivers to get UDT 2.0 to work on my old lazy suzan hardware?
You might have to update your lazy susan's firmware. It can be a bit of a pain in the ass, but check your LS's manufacturer's support site for instructions.
For those of you who can't get the citadel agrax earth shade, you can make the black wash, double the water, add 4 drops of a dark brown paint and 4 of a cream/off white paint- I used Folkart Parchment for the white and Apple Barrel Chocolate Bar, but anything close should do. It made a little darker grey, but it still looks really nice I'm actually considering going over the middle zone with it before coating it, to give it that kind of gritty, worn smooth stone look
It is if you do movement in battles abstractly and do not move your characters/monsters like wargaming. The Near/Short/Far is from ICRPG and is another way of judging movement without having to move your minis either from square to square (if you use a grid) or with a measuring stick or ruler. It does speed up play and I have found it to be better but some players may not like it.
Genius. 4’ x 8’ insulation, much cheaper than buying foam core. My go to is Reddit for characters, backgrounds, patterns, monsters and print on card stock. This just shows you don’t need to buy expensive gear. (Not to put down the expensive stuff, but this is great for playing on a budget.)
Congratulations to your 100... I really hope there will follow many many great videos. So I’m a little concerned with this setup. It works fine with 1 enemy. But what if you’re fighting a group of goblins. One advances on the healer. She retreats away from the advanced goblin, but not towards the center group. How would you position that?
I live in Queensland, and it seems like the choice of insulation at the stores here is a bit limited (not enough cold weather). No XPS to be found... So where a mate got me some sheets of XPS from an old vending machine, I was like: "UDT!!!!"
This may be mentioned in another video, but if you dig out the circles just a hair more, you could make inserts and use one table top with multiple looks.
This is awesome!! Love this a lot. The zoning is perfect especially for new players. Bravo sir!! I am totally going to build one of these! Well done brother!
I like the separation idea, I'd definitely use this for numenera due to its distance system being perfect for this, but I'd probably use the original version for running dnd with my group, their sticklers for stuff like that
kinda wish i would have found your channel before sinking hundreds of dollars into wizkids tiles, I really like the idea of a circular terrain that serves as a spotlight over the current action
Honorable Professor Dungeonmaster, I have watched and enjoyed all of your videos, but UDT and zoned engagement has transformed my games. I hope posting in this older thread still reaches you as it references a key component of my comment. Specifically the relation to stage play sets at 3:43 of Zoned Dungeon Terrain for D&D & Pathfinder (Ep. 100) ua-cam.com/video/XfAKW5mNrTI/v-deo.html As a nearly lifelong Thespian this made sooo much sense to me. Quickly drop on some tree trunks, pillars, doorways, stairs or partial walls and the STAGE is set the scene has changed. And now a request. Please follow-up on the stage association, in terms of miniatures. Should they not also follow the classic Greasepaint approach of the theater's make-up in their painting? Exaggerated eyes, lips, poses and props; designed to be seen from a distance not a under a Crystal Brush microscope. Many of the recurring minis in your videos seem to follow this idea, but I would love to hear you expound on that idea. I hope this finds you and the family well and that you will consider my request as a topic for one of your future videos. With respect and anticipation, Richard
I took 2- 12"×12", self-adhesive floor tiles and stuck them together. There is a kind of outer area, and inner area for "zones". Hoping this works for Discord chat gaming! It is mainly so I can keep track as the GM of who is doing what! Maybe it will work!
Fantastic. So glad you set up a Patreon, your content is well worth it! Also, I think I'll be using my airbrush to create a similar effect on my current UDT.

Congrats on 100 videos.
