I think my heart races just a little bit more for the vintage Rolex GMT watches. Especially the Coke Bezel models. What an amazing collection in the windows. Thanks so much for going to the trouble to give such a great overall review of what you are filming. It's a great break from lockdown fatigue being able to enjoy them.
This is really something! More Rolex sports models than I've ever seen in awhile and all.for sale. But this isn't an AD, is it? So, these models will all be at a premium, whether new or preworn.
Every time I see Austin's video, Japan is Rolex heaven and there is certainly no shortage to new to vintage. Once again thumbs UP!!! 5 stars all around!
I learn a lot from your videos Austin especially Rolex vintage pieces and you are very knowledgable about them 😁 cheers and continue with the beautiful contents 👍👍👍
Another quality vid Austin, thanks. Favourite... There was a 2018 white gold black ceramic Daytona in the first shop, on an oysterflex. What a nice piece.
I feel stupid. I checked Paul Pluta’s channel and Archieluxury channel, and can’t find any live streams. Do I have the wrong channel or are the videos deleted after live broadcast? If you have a link that’d be awesome. Thanks!
Domo Arigato Austin. I have a pre-2000 Rolex (A serial also) and confirmed the hollow end link just as your Rolex Spotting Basics tutorial showed. Thank you for the useful video! By the way, one of these days you should talk in Japanese and have subtitles. Since you change things up from time to time anyways.
Stumbled upon your channel. Very intuitive and your knowledge of the brand is amazing so much to learn. Thank you for sharing. As a comment please zoom out slightly to make the price tags visible.
Horological fatigue Austin says about speeding past the current models. What it really seems like to me was Austin’s horological boredom with current models , and his horological excitement to get up to the vintage pieces he so loves and could see above out of the corner of his eyes. You defiantly have a definitive preference Austin 👊🏼
Great video, albeit making things more confusing for me. Can I simply get the latest 116710LN, and be happy with it not being a ceramic or stick dial - all of which I have no idea of?
well that was fun... I'm not sure about the goal of being able to tell the solid end links from the others. I'd be down for learning it if my job was buying and selling or if I was very interested in that model I suppose. I should have more empathy in life and shall strive to do so. It is resolved, LOL.
That must be the case with the 16700. All the 16710 U serials that I've seen - aside from the one in this very video - have been Swiss only dials, so they must have incorporated luminova a bit earlier in the GMT Master 2.
On a separate note, your comments on your videos are hilarious, like comparing the watch to a whore at the altar-or encouraging us to troll at the end 😂😂. Someone needs to make a compilation book of Austinisms.
Funny to see the crazy inventory, it makes me drool but also reminds me why the prices got inflated to begin with. All the grey market dealers buying up inventory, a lot of ad's selling under the table to them at a markup instead of to regular customers or people just buying and selling the them for the cash. Now lets see how long they stay in business sitting on over priced inventory.
Question for you Austin: I don't recall if I heard from one of your videos, but is it true that there are so many "newer" model watches available in Japan because the Japanese typically desire to own newer/new luxury goods and thus buy and sell after a short period of ownership? Also, is it generally accepted that the Japanese take very good care of their watches and thus present great buying opportunities for used pieces regarding condition? Many thanks.
Yes, it's a great place to buy because the examples are great and so is the selection. Prices can be a bit high, though. "is it true that there are so many "newer" model watches available in Japan because the Japanese typically desire to own newer/new luxury goods and thus buy and sell after a short period of ownership?" On the whole, yes, but I'm not sure that it applies to Rolex and other collectible vintage watches because of their desirability.
Awesome GMT lineup you saw there! i am always wondering, is spider dial a kinda defect that we should avoid when buying Vintage pieces?or is it more desirable? those tritium pieces looks like aging nicely ;)
That's a good question, because it's certainly a defect. But it's the defects and anomalies that are what makes these pieces special. I can certainly understand the argument against paying 20 grand for something with a cracked dial, but I also understand the rarity factor that's at play.
@@watchsymposium Thanks for your inputs Austin! great to hear an opinion that seems quite down to earth :) i guess those spider dialed watches might be ones that i will tend to keep for a very long time once i decided to buy one.. anyways i am still thinking which vintage GMT-Master to go for although many says 1675 is the defacto that any collector would go for but price wise, might be not the best at this current covid stituation.
Ps thanks for the name-check 🙂 btw, sure you know, but I'm not my namesake who has a Watch related UA-cam channel - we couldn't be more different tbh 🤔
Good stuff Austin they have some kit out your way you just wouldn’t see in London. That 1960 1675 with the gloss dial is a bit dubious mind - they were gilt ‘swiss’ radium dial with a chapter ring right up until the end of 1960 but there may have been a few unused dials - if anyone is getting into these high priced gilt watches or any high value up to 1974 always if you can get the case back taken off and the 3 monthly or quarterly date is there in Roman numerals eg IV 64 is Oct-Dec 1964 (forth quarter is also incorrectly stamped VI sometimes - that’s fine too !) I would only buy this 1675 if it was fourth quarter 196O therefore for reason above...any later and I think it would a dial swap...Lovely watch though. Ps RIP Honor Blackman the original 6542 Gmt poster girl. Been wearing mine as a salute!
Ps meaning that it would have to one of the very first non radium dial watches ever hence could only really have be fitted at factory at the end of the 1960 - and yes the best 5 digit investment (to buy now)is a tritium 1988-1999 lug hole Sea Dweller 16600 they are currently £6k will be £10k in 5 yrs!
I appreciate that, Paul, and thanks for the insight. As your comment illustrates, buying vintage is fraught with risk and you really have to know what you're doing. I can't ever see myself traversing that minefield. But I do loving seeing those vintage pieces - a trip to Nakano is a bit like heading to a horological museum.
🥴bet you will though albeit in a few years - the entry drug is a 16750 (non Wg surround) matte or a similar 16800 matte dial and then a bit of your 16570/14060/16610/16710 love will leave you and your hooked....then looking for a 5513/1680 Matte dial and px’ing/selling a 5 digit. True though knowledge is power in vintage ‘ Malcolm Gladwells 10,000 hours’ is never truer than in watch collecting/investing, though I think Archie misread it as 10 hrs 😮
Funny; if I ever did dabble in vintage - you called it - it would be something like a 16750. "...knowledge is power in vintage". I hear you there! I'm still in the acquisition phase (and thoroughly enjoying it).
@@watchsymposium That would be a v good call for a first plexi/matte dial watch - ps thought your DJ 1601 anology was funny (and a bit weird) in equal measure 😏.... if your viewers are looking for gilt edged vintage investment 1601/1603 (c $4-8k) the two to go for are the unique hand painted 70s/80s Roman numeral AKA Buckley dials (doubled in value in 5 yrs), or if they have a few quid more the 80s 16030 'boiler gauge' dialed watch doubled also in 5 yrs.
It's one of them, yes. I'd say you could probably find one even cheaper in L.A. - prices in Japan tend to be higher than the States. But then again, your tax back could pay for your trip if you get an expensive piece!
Go on Chrono 24 and type in 16600 then hit ‘showing cheapest first’ then checkout the sellers feedbacks and then buy - it’s in escrow account so very safe - buy pre 2000 lug hole, tritium with some patina - box and paper premium is only 15-20% so worth seeking out pay between £6000 and £7500 - I bought a load at £4750 in 2017 so prices are going up but they haven’t gone yet like the 16570 has (which I was buying in 2017 for 3000)
Thank you for producing these excellent videos. Is the Mark I purple bezel for the ceramic pepsi more collectible relative to the Mark II and Mark III?
Some people think it will be in in the future. At the moment the Mark 1 sells for less here in Japan, though that might be just because they are the older ones. In 20 years, finding a Mark 1 might be a really special thing, and command a premium. The only catch is that they are kind of hard to ID if you don't have a Mark 2/3 next to it. I'm kind of surprised dealers here haven't tried to put a slight premium on the Mark 1 to try and milk the speculators.
Austin, what I just don’t get is who is buying these overpriced, overstocked watches, I mean there is a huge amount of inventory. How can they afford to hold all that stock ?
All the watches in this video are legit. The fake Batman you're talking about was not in a reputable store. It was in this video: ua-cam.com/video/CwJCZvnaLS0/v-deo.html

Austin great content as always keep up the great work
I can’t believe the amount of inventory at this place. There’s nothing like it where I’m at in California
Now we know why there are no Rolex available, they're all in this shop.
Those prices though! Way high. That’s why they sit there. Sad and wristless

Your videos are getting better... really enjoy the archee references
That 1675 with the spidering gilt dial... Damn, that’s nice! Also really interesting to see the stick dial ceramic GMT!
Keep it going.... I have been enjoying your videos here in Singapore... 😆
Love the content man... I can watch this all day. I'd like to see more datejust models since they're entry level for me

I loved the Tudors, and the price on that day date!
Yup saw my 16710. Looking good.
Austin, I bought my GMT Master in mid-1997. It was a U series with Tritium. Seems like all 1997 models have Tritium

do japan shop prices matter when we have chrono 24? you can look for the cheapest watch on the market from around the world
It was cool to see so many great watches all in one place, thanks for the video. :) Will you be purchasing any?
I really think I have enough pre-owned, neo-vintage pieces. Aside from a brand new piece at an AD, I can't see getting another Rolex.
Crazy inventory. Subscribing. Phist!
What’s a stick dial? Something helpful for us would be if you could convert prices to USD. Subscribed!
Thanks for subscribing. A stick dial has two sticks (II) in place of the Roman numerals on the dial of a GMT Master 2.
Great job! Do another video that involves food!
Where can i buy a good deal Rolex Watch in Japan
Hi, mate have you seen in Japan a Rolex Bamford Daytona Model 116520 Spirit of Japan Red Dial?
Ever tried a watch with a world time bezel????seem like a good tool to have if travelling 😆
Hi Austin, from ur point of view, which one better.. subs or sea dweller? Tq
where's that "link in the description" about a video which shows how to recognize the solid endlinks bracelets...?
It's there. But here it is again: ua-cam.com/video/ms1YTOAphT8/v-deo.html

Fairly expensive when compared to MSRP .. guessing this was not an AD...
