I prefer fixed blades for dirty work. If it involves mud, sand, blood, guts, or food then it's not a job for the folder. Cleaning a folding knife reminds me of cleaning a gun. Cleaning a fixed blade reminds me of cleaning a spoon.
@@Kinetic.44 look it's captain obvious with the most useless comment in the section. Probably because of worldwide varied laws preventing you from carrying full sized fixed blades. I have normally throughout the years gone back & forth between fixed, folder, both for probably a good 45/50 years. Laws did not really exist in the beginning... then became a real hassle. In my "golden years," I am turning partial to fixed. Butt: one can never depend on "an only" I do... appreciate on the combination. Good tutorial! Thanx, J
Lionsteel M1 is my favorite EDC fixed blade. It feels great like it can do some serious work. The kizer mini harpoon is a close second. they're very different but I love them both.
I also edc a fixed blade along with my folders. Sometimes a fixed blade is a better option. The folders I carry tho, a lock fail is about as likely as a fixed blade folding and they all open plenty fast enough that it's not even a thought.
I carry fixed blade quite often and generally prefer them to folders when I'm going to be using them outdoors, even opening boxes etc. But i also have a pretty good collection of folders and they have their place too. Especially if you work somewhere like an office, or you're going to a "fancy" event, or wedding. Even a restaurant etc. Certain situations are more "socially acceptable" to have folders but for general purpose i like small fixed blades. Even a good quality neck knife.
Not quite. Can't beat a folder for ease of carry. Strong enough for most tasks. Do like a good fixed blade though, which is why I leave one on my boat.
Any recommendation on getting multi-position sheaths for fixed blade knives that came with traditional belt sheaths? Just looking for something that works well and conveniently without being aggressive or ostentatious.
After I started getting more into edc knives, I couldn't find myself getting comfortable with a fixed blade so I finally opted a little Kershaw with a carbon fiber handle. I liked it so much I bought a second one. I broke the first one and still have my second. Although, I did fully switch my edc knife from the Kershaw to a really good quality made Benchmade CPM-Cruwear in OD green with a desert tan blade. It feels extremely durable, the blade holds a good edge, the springs are solid and not flimsy nor do they feel like they've gotten weaker over the year I've had it. It's an absolute workhorse. My only complaint about the fixed blade is the space they take up, I can stick my folding knife in my pocket with the clip and it takes up barely any room. If I had a fixed blade that size it wouldn't be good for a whole lot.
@@Just_another_guy23 I love my pocket fixed blades but I will admit it has to carry like my folders in order for me to carry it often and that’s the ones I carry most. I don’t have to worry about gunk or a lick to fail whenever I’m doing tougher things. I will always be a folder guy most of all but I also now enjoy my fixed blades from time to time 👍🍻👌
Yeah I had an injury that messed up my hand so I am hyper-aware closing liner locks. Now I carry a fixed blade and/or a tri-ad folder, and never close it in a way that will guillotine my fingers 😅
Carried a liner lock folder for years as my work knife, up until the point in which a freak accident resulted in it folding forcefully on my pointer finger. I've got a nice scar and story, but I traded some of the feeling in my finger for it. I still keep my hawkbill around for hawkbill things, but I'm currently rotating between a CRKT Razel Compact and CRKT Spew depending on my mood.
I like that deep sheath with the clip. I wish more makers would provide them. I like the idea of a fixed blade that's as unobtrusive as a folder, but can still be used one-handed. I tried carrying a Minimalist in my pocket, but that's no longer one-handable.
You can attach a short paracord onto your belt loop or your belt, and also to the sheath. So when you then pull it out of your pocket it opens onehanded too.
EDC for the great outdoors, I agree. Saw a man walking the aisles of a grocery store sporting a sheath knife once. Five minutes later , four cops come dashing in. I'll stick with pocket knives. Thank you very much.
Got myself a pocket tango with the olive wood handle and neskmuck blade as my first edc fixed blade n love it! Have worn it in my pocket every day since picking it up
I would totally carry an EDC fixed blade if it wasn't for California laws..witch is, a fix blade CANNOT be concealed... So a 3-inch fixed blade has to be worn on the outside so it's visible but the cold steel XL espada can be concealed.. I really like that r&j Jack Saw
Never had a problem when I lived in Cali the handle is visible outside the pocket so It’s not concealed and if it’s small enough it’s legal even if it’s in your pocket. Yeah the shirt might hang over it who cares.
I just wish fixed blades weren’t suck a pain to carry. You really need a dedicated rig to hold that thing on your belt or something and it will probably be uncomfortable. Where i just toss a folder in my pocket, hangs on the pocket clip.
Hey bud, I got the cleaver v2 from off grid, first knife in awhile, just wanted to let you know love all your vids and would love to chat about a few, we have the same taste, that fixed blade reminds me off the hoglet, (which you did another great review on]. On folding knifes, most people oil, the pivots and bearing in them and even the blades depending on the steel you’re using should be oiled as well. You have to keep the locking mechanism clean and all the smaller parts in the handles with a fix blade, you can still oil the blade not have to worry about any of the pivots or anything like that
