In Episode 1 of Ben Law's Woodland Year, we meet Britain's best-known woodsman, and the group of young people who hope to become one of his two apprentices for the next year.
The lucky two will spend a year learning from Ben, as they help him work the sweet chestnut coppice in Prickly Nut Wood, Ben's Sussex, southeast England, home and workplace.
As they spend a week learning basic skills, Ben observes them, assessing who he'll spend the the next year with.
It's easy to enjoy the outdoor work of a coppicing woodsman in the early autumn sunshine, but Ben has to work out how the candidates will cope with winter, hard labour, off-grid life in the woods, and each other.
In Episode 2, The Real Apprentice, Ben chooses his woodland companions for the woodland year.
