Have not been very pleased in the past with Golf training aids. I've had a Smart Ball now for 7 months and it by far it's been the best "training aid" I've ever used! It helped rid me get rid of my "chicken wing" and it's been a key reason for providing me with a more "connected" golf swing (even full swings). So I would highly recommend it especially for the high to mid handicap golfer.
I bought one a month ago. Will be using it over the winter, swinging indoors with my short weighted club. Trying to create and maintain the feeling. “Smart balls”.
Had a lesson last week to work on reducing dynamic loft and the coach introduced this aid. I found it useful to demonstrate that connected feeling you talk about.
Harvey Pennick used to get his guys to practise with a band around the arms above the elbows to keep them together, which is somewhat the same as this and he had some sweet swingers under his tutorage. Ben Hogan also had a practise drill with a belt above the elbows and also one around the knees, and arguably no-one has ever hit the Ball better than him. Henry Cotton also was double jointed in his elbows and attributed his success to being able to keep his elbows close together.
Really like the Smart Ball -- I also have the Tour Striker Educator -- they are super well thought out items especially for better players. Sure, (and of course!) any drill or training aid will take major effort to get it to translate -- but these TS ones are really great to get feels and get a barometer of what is helping.
Had a go with one, first ever training aid/drill that ive been useless with/at so may be this is the one to get! It definitely changed what my left arm/shoulder was doing and hit some great strikes after and an added benefit was i was even better on the putting green!
Instering points here. Ultimately training aids, like drills are only good if they are used correctly with the right understanding of what they do/don’t do. I’ve used a small football for me and my son before, does help to get the feeling of being connected and illustrate (and therefore helping you to become aware) of the moves that are causing that to break down
Just bought one to help me with my downswing and I do find it restrictive. However, somehow it feels the right way to train as I am forced to turn more in my back swing & keep my lead (left) arm straight which I have always had a problem with. So, in conclusion, it is also improving my backswing and teaching me to keep the sacred triangle at the same time. Great for me! Thank you for a very interesting video & although I bought the training aid before I viewed it, I feel better in the knowledge that I did the right thing. Very good tip regarding putting too.👍
Really find it helps set my wrists in the take away and stops me taking it inside so much. Will definitely take away the ideas of swapping in and out of the ball more. Thanks Mark really helpful 👍
Interesting to me as a returner to playing golf this year. Looking at this video, your suggestions for how to use this ball and that you can get one from a choice of a few on Amazon for less than a tenner, then I think it is worth a try.
I took lessons at GolfTec a few years ago. They LOVE their training aids. I improved so much. Unfortunately, the improvement was on doing the drills with the training aids - I was awesome at that part. My golf got worse. As soon as you take the training aid away (smart ball, impact snap, chair drills, wall drills, strength bands, orange whip, etc.) and put a golf club in my hand, I could never translate it.
I love the thought on translating feels with the aid to without. It's also a great reminder that these things are also supposed to be focused on parts... I would love to see a training aid you can find where you work on wrist angles... other than Mrs. Parfield's plates. LOL "SMART BALLS"
Thanks for pointing out about the chipping, I found it useless on full swings as I stayed connected and fortunately arms and body work pretty well together. Something to think about, I prefer the alternative uses, currently practicing my knee-ups!
Great review, must admit it’s tempting me lol! Especially with chipping, something I’ve been working a lot on over the past year. With all these things - need to have as part of a lesson for a specific purpose / problem.
Great ideas on the chipping/short game front! Would love to see (forgive if you've already done it... if so, point me to it) a full vid on chipping... club/degree selection as it relates to the lie and different types of grass.
I have one, used it a few times and stopped interestingly.. I wasn't sure if it was engraining the right feelings, etc.. I'm definitely going to use it for putting now (hadn't considered that), that makes sense to me what you said.. also, will give it a try for chips also.
seems like it could be useful for short shots and putting, but can't see it for full shots. I was wondering when this came up if you were thinking about how you can keep connected when you are focusing on fast hip rotation using the ground properly. Be interested on hearing your thoughts on this.
Great content again Mark, really thorough review. Think I might give it ago, do feel like I loose my right elbow sometimes, so think this aid might help.
Smart ball, would not use it to self diagnosis, but if introduced during a lesson with a coach, maybe as you said, only to help focus and understand feeling it help generate.
Smart Balls - I used a Dollar Store small ball for a time and I liked how it helped me feel the arm-body connection. But the issue with any training aid to me is that at some point it time it goes to the closet and never comes back out again.
Totally agree with something under the arm. I found it promoted a robotic movement which lacked the feel and fluidity which I like to have in my swing. I just started using the superspeed sticks but don't think this would be for me. I see the benefit for chipping but still not for me as chipping is the strongest part of my game.
Mark can you test the ideas of using it to improve ground forces? The protocol on the website has a drill that tries to get you to push into and out of the ground.
I hope you read this Mark. You do really tell the honest truth about these various “swing aids”. People need to realise that none of these things are the total answer. I’m sure there are lots of disappointed people out there who thought that “for example” the orange whip etc was the answer only to be extremely disappointed. I admire you just telling the truth and attempting to manage people’s expectations even if they don’t want to hear it.
Interesting discussion mark. I’m not sure about these training aids. Not used one never had a go with one. Could that be the reason I’m inconsistent? Probably not.
Really good watch I'm always looking for something! Anything to improve. What are your thoughts on This it's titled! The Power Package Golf Swing Practice Aid! It's meant to set your wrists correctly. Be good to know your thoughts.
Smart balls bruh.. I bought one on Amazon for less than $20..It's not the brand name tourstriker ball which I believe they want at least $50 but does the same job..used it for short pitching practice but you are correct in the fact that you need to make sure you keep your wrist action going..when I first used it I was locking my wrist....But like all training aids it now lives in a box in the garage...Cheers
Mark. Have your tired the Tour Striker Plane Mate? Same basic issues and considerations - can you repeat the movement patterns without the device? The protocols for the device all require you alternate between seining with and without it to ingrained the movement patterns.
Wanna have a laugh !? I notice your spectacles Mark. I.e. they look perfect for me playing golf. I will explain. Returned to playing golf this year at age 51. Now I am a spectacles wearer but also Varifocals...I.e bottom third of the actual lenses help me when reading a book or moby phone. The top 2 thirds of the lenses are to help with being short sighted. Since June 2020...I been practicing golf a plenty and using moby as a video playback aid. Been mainly concentrating on turning the torso rather than using arms and trying to stop being too steep ...I.e trying to go from 5 to 11 o'clock...to 4 to 10 o' clock. But being similar build to Nick Faldo....I have had trouble turning the torso and getting the left shoulder tucked under my chin on the backstroke without lifting my head up that then pulls up my torso...I.e I sometimes lift up too much and thin the ball strike. Well....it's partly because of my spectacles being varifocal. I.e.. when posturing looking down at the ball I'm about to hit...i naturally have to angle my head into my neck to use the top part of my lenses to see the ball sharply. If I lift up my head allowing more room between my neck and chin....I am then seeing through the bottom third of my lenses and seeing a blurry golf ball on the ground. Hope you understood all that story. Needless to say I've now got another pair of glasses not varifocal and more suited to my golf game and I'm happy to say they have made a 20% positive difference in not only seeing the golf ball clearer but also allows me to lift my chin up creating more room for my left shoulder to tuck under when body turning on my back swing. Thus....I can fully see how your spectacles are ideal, nice and full and not too rectangular.
I feel this is a more positive golfing aid than a negative. Don’t forget we are educating the brain regarding the golf swing. 5 Reps with and 5 without.
My golf coach identified an issue with me lifting my elbows up and being disconnected this could be something for me to try to help jot do that for sure
Mark, that looks quite good. As a pro you must have hit thousands of balls, it is how you become a professional. As an amateur I see some good gains in the short game. I will give it a try to help my putting and chipping. Thanks. First time I have seen this aid.
Mark, I think the same argument could be made with coaching. It's easier (in my opinion) to execute new swing ideas, a grip change, etc when the coach is right there to correct you or let you know if you're getting the idea or action right. But the student has to be able to take that coaching to the putting green, range, etc and execute as their coach intended. Not trying to argue the point that people need to be wary of getting "lazy" when using a training aid. Coaching > training aid all day.
I do try teaching aids but none on a consistent basis. I recently got the Callaway Connect-Easy training aid and only tried it a couple of times (in lockdown). It's very affordable and I think it's really going to help me if I stay with it. Would like your thoughts on it. Problem with aids is that there are no instructions on how to use it.
Could you test the salter pressure insoles are they any good? Be good testing it up against the force plate think James ridyard shared a vid of Francesco Molinari using them Cheers bru
I've asked Santa for one of these and I've been a good boy so I will be trying it out on the 25th. I want it to help me keep my trail arm "connected" with my lead arm (it can have a mind of its own). I experimented with a similar sized ball and it felt good but I got tired of picking the ball up and it wasn't as easy to engage as with the lanyard.
I bought one last year. I only use it if I haven’t played for a while to get synced up. I’ve never tried it chipping though🤔 putt out Matt with a mirror and gates are the only other training aids I have Bruh
Mark, I’ve used the smartball but I find the Structureball by Watson Golf is a better idea due to the fact it’s sculpted to fit precisely between the arms. Also why not look at the Hanger. It works really well for me personally. Might be worth a video or 2 .. I combine this with the Swingplane Perfector to double check I’m on the correct plane.
Changed my short game using a two coloured ball with hollows for your arms that came out about 10 years ago....it's the only training aid ive ever used for more than a few weeks....and still go back to it ....unlike the Leadbetter swing setter🤔🤔🤣🤣🤣
Can you help Please Want to go to the 150th open Do i get a ticket to walk around or do i get a ticket to sit in one of the grand stands I have never been to a pro Game before and would like to see this one I have a place to stay in Fife Scotland Any tips Please and Thanks
The Smart Ball is a great training aid, I use mine from full swing to putting. It's been a pretty helpful tool to have for staying connected and shorting my back swing. P.S. loving the podcast, great group of guys with different perspectives on the game. It's always enjoyable to give it a listen.
Smart balls. I'm tempted to get a £2 foamy one from a discount sports shop and tie a shoelace around it. Am I missing something, it's just a ball on a string?
I try and stick to lessons personally. However, I feel like there must be training aid specific to each golfer that can help. I can't keep throwing money at lessons on a weekly basis, so there must be something that I can work on at home?
Interesting with the chipping piece. Does it impact your feel for distance control? Likewise does it work for the different types of shots you would need around the green given lie etc? It's an area of my game that I consider a strength, but I find myself almost never having exactly the same stroke given all the variables you are taking into account on each shot. I'm possibly approaching things the wrong way, but I'd be concerned with something like this that you would end up grooving one style of shot to the detriment of others?

I've just ordered one so your practical comments are most useful. 😊
I bought one a month ago. Will be using it over the winter, swinging indoors with my short weighted club. Trying to create and maintain the feeling.
“Smart balls”.
I watch most of your videos, I’d argue this is your best one
I have that very same teaching aid Mark and it's great.......it keeps my dog amused for ages.
Had a lesson last week to work on reducing dynamic loft and the coach introduced this aid. I found it useful to demonstrate that connected feeling you talk about.
me too
Love the espresso machine..I’ve had the Breville Oracle for 6 years now….LOVE IT!

I’m a big fan, helps me with tempo and rotation.
You are so spot on with training aids! Love the honesty bruh!

Smart balls. I used to buy all types of training aids. Then I got lessons. I always recommend lessons now.
strike matt, like to see what you think of it, seems good to me, thinking of getting one x
Anything which gives good external awareness like that is great so can experiment and get feedback. Try theforcepedal too for increasing swing speed.
Got one. Loved it for chipping during lockdown
acustrike mat. helps with my swing path
I agree, it's a super aid.
Use of the ball in chipping and putting was very interesting. Thanks!
I agree with you mark I have one and think it's good for chipping keeping all connected,if it's good enough for Rosey then good enough for me 👍
Smart balls, i still bring out the Tour Striker 8 iron whenever i start getting squirrelly. I should combo the two, unstoppable!!
Have used the medicus driver and iron for swing plane and takeaway control and the orange whip for loosening up, seem to work well enough
Smart balls. Great video bro, more please....
Just bought one to help me with my downswing and I do find it restrictive. Smart balls. More videos with training aids please
I have one and I'm like you Mark 3/4 shots and pitching its good its best for the feeling of being connected.
Smart balls
I have an Orange Whip on my Xmas list. Would love your thoughts on this. Like the look of this ball for chipping.
Smart balls. Don’t own any training aids, but I think this would help with the ongoing struggles with arm separation.
Smart balls and thinking of buying one after the Christmas frenzy is over and practice areas are allowed to open again
I love the thought on translating feels with the aid to without. It's also a great reminder that these things are also supposed to be focused on parts...
I would love to see a training aid you can find where you work on wrist angles... other than Mrs. Parfield's plates. LOL
"SMART BALLS"
Love mine. Use to keep chicken wing at bay. Interesting re putting. Will give that a go during the week.
Smart balls 👍🏻👍🏻 agreed mark, training aids (and drills in general) can hurt as much as they help. Proper usage is key
Fair Review, Thanks for the information Mark.

You have been dropping some very good videos lately!
I use it non stop in teaching.. alternating constantly

Nice putter Mark! Apart from a couple of tour sticks I've never used any aids.
Smart ball, would not use it to self diagnosis, but if introduced during a lesson with a coach, maybe as you said, only to help focus and understand feeling it help generate.
do not have one, but would give it a go fore sure. be interesting just to see if I could make a full swing with it or not.
Mark good video. Very good points
Smart Balls - I used a Dollar Store small ball for a time and I liked how it helped me feel the arm-body connection. But the issue with any training aid to me is that at some point it time it goes to the closet and never comes back out again.
PuttOut is my primary one for putting speed. Also a yardstick for putting
Smart balls.
I also don't mind using it under the lead arm pit to assist with lead shoulder connection
Mine was collecting some dust lately but I need to use it more. I see the value in it but unfortunately I don’t get enough range time hitting balls
I love mine for a warm up with wedges each session, my coach at Mike Bender is a fan of them
I hope you read this Mark. You do really tell the honest truth about these various “swing aids”. People need to realise that none of these things are the total answer. I’m sure there are lots of disappointed people out there who thought that “for example” the orange whip etc was the answer only to be extremely disappointed. Mark, what kind of espresso machine is that mate? I just don't see spending the money for a beach ball, but I do like it for putting and short shots.
Smart Balls. Only training aid I have ever used is the PuttOut stuff. I'm not much of a gadget user when it comes to golf.
Interesting discussion mark. I’m not sure about these training aids. Not used one never had a go with one. Could that be the reason I’m inconsistent? Probably not.
Video liked for the cheeky 8iron line ball 🙂
I've got and use tour stricker planemate transformed my game, and this looks interesting for me it reputation muscle memory
Really good watch I'm always looking for something! Anything to improve.
What are your thoughts on This it's titled!
The Power Package Golf Swing Practice Aid!
It's meant to set your wrists correctly. Be good to know your thoughts.
100% agree, nuff said
Mark can you do a pros and cons of your back yard putting green.
Loving your work
Smart Balls. My Mrs saw the end of this and asked “Are you watching H from Steps?” 🤣
Mark. Have your tired the Tour Striker Plane Mate? Same basic issues and considerations - can you repeat the movement patterns without the device? The protocols for the device all require you alternate between seining with and without it to ingrained the movement patterns.

I love you Mr Crossfield
does the placement make a difference with the swing? i.e. forearms, elbow joints?
Another one is the Callaway swing easy but this ball looks better and less restrictive
Mark, that looks quite good.
As a pro you must have hit thousands of balls, it is how you become a professional.
As an amateur I see some good gains in the short game. I will give it a try to help my putting and chipping. Thanks.

interested to watch... I've had the ball for a while and just started using again today! its like you read my mind haha

For some it is great. Others not so much. Plus some have body types that would never let them pinch their elbows so close in
Mark could you do a review on the plane mate ?
Changed my short game using a two coloured ball with hollows for your arms that came out about 10 years ago....it's the only training aid ive ever used for more than a few weeks....and still go back to it ....unlike the Leadbetter swing setter🤔🤔🤣🤣🤣
Can you help Please Want to go to the 150th open Do i get a ticket to walk around or do i get a ticket to sit in one of the grand stands I have never been to a pro Game before and would like to see this one I have a place to stay in Fife Scotland Any tips Please and Thanks
can you test the george gankas g box and the swingyde
Got one and its good warm up with it use it for some shots ... take it off hit without ... then hit another 7 or 8 .. I think its good
The Smart Ball is a great training aid, I use mine from full swing to putting.
Would like to see Shibuno try this. She might need a smaller ball 😀
Got one. Used it a couple of times but not enough to really review it yet
Probably just cheaper to get a small beach ball off amazon! Mark, what coffee machine do you have, I get jealous every time I see it?!
SMART BALLS....must say I’ve invested in some training tat over the years, I’ll keep my money with that one!!
Excellent, H-H-Honiton , lovely Oniton boy
I try and stick to lessons personally. However, I feel like there must be training aid specific to each golfer that can help. I can't keep throwing money at lessons on a weekly basis, so there must be something that I can work on at home?
Loving the shirt
Interesting with the chipping piece. Does it impact your feel for distance control? Likewise does it work for the different types of shots you would need around the green given lie etc? It's an area of my game that I consider a strength, but I find myself almost never having exactly the same stroke given all the variables you are taking into account on each shot. I'm possibly approaching things the wrong way, but I'd be concerned with something like this that you would end up grooving one style of shot to the detriment of others?
I think a smart ball would help my chipping and putting, I periodically get a little wrists with both.
I can't take a full shot using a ball. I also have one of those orange whips and really only use it for warm up now. Smart Balls!
Good video, thanks! Maybe a white (or just not blue or black) shirt next time so we can see it through your swing would be cool.
