Merry Christmas Bruce. For someone how takes a lot of pictures from a kayak, the new Ctrl+Right Click - Drag to rotate the image is almost as good as any present from Santa.
The problem with the repeated brush strokes looks like an overflow issue, a stack being filled faster than it can be computed. Your drawing is very pencil-like, Bruce, and that frequency may be too much to compute fast enough (more than 80 drawing requests in a few seconds). Because it seems to recover quickly without any error messages, my point is that it isn't a bug, but rather 'unconstrained' use of the facility ;O) Regarding the drawn masks, I limit myself to 20 per image, otherwise everything slows too much down. But ideally these limits should be farther away.
Yeah, I wondered if that might have been the case (too many strokes, too quickly). I'll have to take it a bit slower and see if it behaves differently!
Hi Bruce, I have had DT offer a wait or a shutdown quite frequently when editing a set of images. This only used to happen when highlight reconstruction was in play, but now happens when an intensive operation is in progress.
Well, Darktable 4.6 release notes contain this: "Where multiple drawn shapes are grouped (e.g. in a module's mask) the mask manager module now displays a tick mark in front of the active combination mode (in the popup menu) when right-clicking one of the constituent shapes. This is usually much easier to read than the "Venn diagram" icons in the main module UI." You weren't the only one having an issue reading the active mask combination mode ;)
I've also had darktable drop the selection of the brush tool sometimes, hoping that works better in 4.6, but I really love that they added the brushing on top of other brush strokes, that was one of the few features lightroom has that I had wished darktable had as well.
Yep, same here. Been waiting for an "incremental brush tool" for ages. To be honest, I'd prefer if it was a bitmap mask, rather than a series of individual strokes. Also, an erase brush stroke mode would be ideal (like LR's negative brush). But hey, I'll take this as a win for now!
The brush is the weakest solution in DT's mask toolset. The current solution preserves all brush movements and the result is a huge set of paths. I don't think this is necessary, it would be enough to convert the brushed area into a single path selection.
@@audio2u Just off the top of my head, I believe it should be possible to add an action in the mask manager to "consolidate" a certain combination of masks into one single raster mask. And maybe also an option to treat all new brush strokes as additions to that raster mask. This way of working would lose some of the kind of flexibility you talk about in this video, but that makes sense when you're progressively adding strokes to increase the effect in certain spots. So, it's probably possible to add some of this without redoing all the masks-related code, but it's a rabbit hole also, so maybe it should be planned out before someone starts making incremental changes to the code.
Great video. It's been a while since i used the line mask tool, which could be a few releases ago, but i wanted to mask a straight object. However, when i drew along the object, dt created a series of points along my path and because i have tremors, it was a wiggly line. What i wanted to be able to do it to click at the beginning of the line, then click at the end and dt would create a line between the points. If i wanted to follow a curve, i would have liked to click at the beginning, double click to end the first segment and start the second, then double click to end the 2nd and start the 3rd, then click to end the 3rd. This is the way another software i use creates lines.
I totally get where you're coming from, and I have a hack for that. Draw the shortest line segment you can. With any luck, it'll only have a start point and an end point. If you DO accidentally end up with more than 2 points, simply ctrl+click the middle point/s to delete them. Now, you can simply move the start point to where you want the line to start, and move the other point to where you want the line to end, and voila! You're done!
Hello. I am fairly new to DT and like many before me was wedded to Adobe. I find these films of yours truly informative and very well put together. One thing within DT which I cannot fathom is the following. When I add modules to the Quick Access Panel within DT when I add certain modules it kicks others that I have previously added out. Does this make sense. The main culprits seem to be Sigmoid, Filmic, Contrast Equaliser... Sorry if I am being dim but I have trawlled Google and DT online manual to no avail Happy Christmas.. Regs Rupert
Thanks for the kind words, Rupert. As for the QAP issue, maybe there's a limit to the number of modules that can be added? So adding one more than the maximum maybe kicks another one out? I don't use it, so have never encountered this.
@@audio2u You may well be right. I will dig around further. I may simply end up by creating something intelligent within the other panels and not really bother with the QAP.. As an aside looking at the YT channels of which you are a member I believe we have very similar interests encompassing music production, video editing and colouring as well as making stuff. If I may suggest please check out Marius Hornberger if you have not already done so. For someone so young he displays an amazing ability to work in wood, metal and an array of other materials and creates amazing things within his relatively confined workshop. Many thanks once again. Please keep up the excellent tutorials on DT. I continue to remain amazed at the power of this application compared to LR. After 20+ years I cancelled my Adobe subscription because I can replicate what I need through DT, Reaper, Resolve and GIMP. Happy Christmas and New Year.
Thanks for 2023 if a bit quiet. Onwards to a video full 2024. Have a fun Christmas.
Thanks, you too!
Merry Christmas Bruce. For someone how takes a lot of pictures from a kayak, the new Ctrl+Right Click - Drag to rotate the image is almost as good as any present from Santa.
Oh yeah, I can imagine!! It would be nigh on impossible to shoot a straight horizon whilst on a kayak.

Enjoy your first Christmas in your new home... and happy new year
Thank you! You too!
Thanks for your videos good sir! I may still be a beginner in photography but DT really stepped up my end results and you helped me get there!
So glad I could help!
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you! Enjoy the time with your loved ones!
Thanks Andreas! And to you, also.
Thank you Bruce! HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Same to you!
Merry Christmas. Great to see you back on here
Thanks Damien, all the best!

Right. I haven't noticed that on my machine. At least, not yet, anyway!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year !
Thanks, same to you!
Merry Christams and a Happy new Year to you Bruce. Thank you for increasing my knowledge of DT over the years.
Glad I could help, Keith!

Hahaha! Classic. I'll take that as a suitable variation on my idea of bold text! :)
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your Family!
Same to you, John!
VERY helpful. Thanks, Bruce.
No worries!

Best wishes for your family, and happy new year
Same to you, Jordi! :)
Nice tip on the rotation! I'd completely missed that in the release notes :)
Looking forward to the 4.6 videos in the new year. Merry Christmas :)
Yeah, that's a nice new addition. Saves an extra couple of mouse clicks.
Thank you and merry Christmas to you and yours.
Thanks Berny, same to you!
Many thanks Bruce
No worries!

Now THAT would be awesome! But not being a coder, I imagine that would require a complete rethinking of the way the code runs in the background?

as usual good job! I wisch you merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Poland
Thanks, you too!
The 'draw' dropping out issue might well be connected with the Wacom. I sometimes have similar issues, resolved if I go back to the mouse.
Ahh, interesting!
