    Brilliant Katherine. Love your book. All children want fair treatment. Skin colour does not matter unless you teach them that it does.

    This should be on the national curriculum, not for students education, but for teacher education. The closed system which hates competition and fears being shown it is not working, is called education and is forced on every child and taught by closed, fearful and indoctrinated minds, from the top down to the bottom. The kids are told what grades suit the school and not what the child needs. They are demorlised and held back from achieving because of the schools fear of failure. The exams limit the students, and the school lies to convince everyone it is for the best, it's not! Education is not geared for the students it is geared for the school or college and its leaders..At parents evenings they tell you have everything is perfect and then your child fails their GCSE. They openly lie to guard their backs, but anybody, any parent who really delves into this will see the truth/ Please delve, ask the questions that are difficult to answer, ask the status of your child within the class. Next time the Head says "Children a C grade is Ok" Realise they don't care about the kids, only the league tables and they won't take any risks of upgrading expectations because it is not in the schools interest.

    What is she is saying is absolutely true. I was a teaching assistant last year and I often felt that my hands were tied and I was treading of egg shells. It really annoys me when people here in the UK blame immigrants for the demise of the country when the education system here is so far behind other countries like Finland or Canada.

      Yes, but Finland has a FAR less strict educational system, whilst years later, the British education system appears to become stricter, and it is still lagging behind the rest of the world.

    Good speech, but why have the Tories done so little of any good to the education system since coming back into power. We're still waiting for the changes.

      Every decent change they’ve wanted to instigate has been opposed by the terrible teachers unions.

    Well of course students now will find a past paper over a decade old more difficult. The specification was different in those times. If my friends and I had a short crash course on the sub-topics taught 50 years ago, I reckon all of us would pass that test with ease. But not now, obviously. If we did it now, we'd only do the questions we've been taught how to do and leave out the other ones (but still attempt them). This isn't because we've been taught a 'dumbed down' spec, but simply a different one. You can't just describe an entire spec as 'dumbed down'. That's not fair. If you really want to compare the specs of two different time periods, do it properly.

    Katharine makes some useful points about the need for excellence and responsibility, but beyond this engages in a considerable amount of stereotyping according to my experience of the public system, but then I work in Australia.

    can anyone help me to understand what she means at 4.12 when she says, 'black children underachieve because of what the well-meaning liberal does to him'? I dont understand- genuine curiosity- not offence is meant to be made.

    • @JeffUK
      @JeffUK 7 років тому +6

      The well meaning liberal is the person in school or people in local authorities that would say 'you can't exclude that boy' for fear of being seen as racist or because they want to give them endless chances as they feel sorry for them or because they make excuses for them.

    Instilling competition isn’t the only way of achieving motivation. Success alone will do it by that I mean being able to see real progress. Teamwork is also a useful way to stimulate motivation and it reflects much of the reality in the business, academic and public worlds these days. Developing digital as well as conventional literacies is yet another way of fostering competence, excellence and motivation .

    • @jclarke7223
      @jclarke7223 5 років тому +1

      What is digital literacy? If a person is unable to read words in a book or on a screen properly it matters little if they are digitally literate or can explain the plot of a film - they cannot read well and this will damage their life chances until it is fixed.

    Competition does not create confidence but adds pressure. Yes we should have high expectations but pitching those who are poorest in a war with those who are exceptional creates disappointment and a fractured system that leads to no child taking a subjects and going in to the workforce. Additionally all subjects syllabus have changed since 1998 so I hope she isn't giving out papers that are not valuable to anyone. And to all who believe that exams are getting harder: for 1 mark name 4 differenc

    I resently left michaela community school because of their 'strict' rules. I got a detention for my homework for not including the spelling or vocab which was not needed. So I spoke to the head of English and told him and he said it was all my fault and that my fellow pupils are doing the right thing by taking their detention and learning from it. What exactly are you learning from something that wasn't told to you in the first place. In the end, he brought me to a private room and shouted at the top of his voice and threatened to tell my future universities that I apply for to tell them not to accept me and that I have no self control. Who has more self control? The teacher that gets frustrated and bring you to a private room to shout at the top of his voice and threaten you or the pupil who is standing up to a unfair punishment?

    • @sensimania

      Lion King I hope you told your parents and they reported the head of English to the authorities. He had absolutely no right to threaten an aspiring student's future. Who the hell does he think he is?? I am so angry right now!

      Perhaps Lion King was not entirely on board with the no excuses culture that has seen Michaela school produce some outstanding results. So what if a teacher shouted at you?! Producing not only the work set, but more again is all built into the system. What do you want, another bog standard school that makes excuses for everything and everybody who cries wolf when they are challenged, or a school full of people who can recite poetry, walk silently in the corridors, add, subtract, multiply and divide in Maths, and correct the Mayor of London when he gives an inaccurate historical date. Katharine Birbalsingh as created a miracle and you should be grateful.

    • @trevorjones3273
      @trevorjones3273 6 років тому +12

      If you were fine five years ago, then why can't you spell 'our' instead of 'are'. You should have written 'our school'. Where is the comma after the words 'lost' and 'fine' as you should have done? It is precisely children's lack of grammatical discipline that has created a nation of illiterates. Katharine Birbalsingh created a school that corrects such basic mistakes. So no, you are not fine until you reach Ms Birbalsingh's exacting standards.

    The way she claims that our education system has been "dumbed" down over the years is extremely derogatory and demoralizing to students like myself who work hard on a daily basis to achieve success. She preaches of lack of motivation and flawed system. Granted our education isn't right, however you also have to look at our current climate and realize that schools aren't necessarily working due to there being nothing to strive toward-no drive for our student as the future isn't as certain...

    • @ajs41

      Why is it ivory tower stuff to have high expectations of all children and to work towards their achievement of high academic standards. Are you saying most children are too stupid to be able to do well? Are you saying children should not take responsibility for their behaviour and its consequences?
