    Having worked for Big Blue (not the computer company) for a good five+ years while in college, I still smell the musty carpet in my nose. From the start of the N64 era up to late PS1/ start of the PS2 era basically. But it was glorious being able to rent five free games (or movies) a week working there. All to be able to tell folks about them was the purpose.
    Collecting now in general just sucks. Not like it was a few years ago even. With you on that on "hoovering" and picking up. I also go out with a target in mind if I look at all lately.
    Salamander and Salamander 2 were A-MAZING in the arcade if you could find it.

    I worked for Netflix for 10 years. We would have Friday “metrics” meetings where Reid would go over the subscriber numbers, news and at the end of the meeting, Blockbuster closings in the Bay Area. I have zero love for Blockbuster because they came to my town and buried Family Video in Pleasanton. Oh, and the $32 late charge I accrued for T2.

    • @DeformedConscience
      @DeformedConscience 2 роки тому

      So you as employees would all high five together because the success you shared at Netflix resulted in the closing down of Blockbusters, Yet you have extreme disdain for Blockbuster itself because that very same success resulted in the closing of your precious childhood Family Video? Hmmmmm.

    I’m 29, and I went to Blockbuster or Hollywood video every week and rented movies. I don’t know if I ever went to a mom and pop rental shop though. I don’t even know if I ever even saw one growing up. So I think a lot of the nostalgia for Blockbuster is probably coming from people like me in their late 20s or early 30s who grew up in the time after Blockbuster had already put the mom and pop stores out of business. For most of us, Blockbuster was probably the only rental service we ever used

    Great video brother! I really wish that more people would talk about the PC Engine but I understand since it never was popular here in North America. At least you’re in the States and don’t have to pay the conversion and shipping charges like we do in Canada.
    I also started my PC Engine collecting just under a year and a half ago and I’ll never own the super expensive titles ($1000+) but there are certainly plenty more to choose from that are great!
    Cheers, Joe

    I've also been collecting PCE pretty hardcore for the last 18 months, starting from nothing. First I got a beautiful, modded and restored briefcase unit from an eBay guru for a pittance. It's very dangerous financially to get into it, but what a unique system. So I still proceeded to spend...many thousands (embarrassed to say just how many) on both HuCard and CIB CD-Rom games. And that doesn't include Sapphire or Magical Chase, the games that are $1k+. The system captures that late 80's / early 90's vibe better than anyone, particularly the feeling from arcade games of that era. Nothing else really like it; the Genesis captured a little of that era too, but not as well.

  • @Sinn0100

    I was such a fool when I was a young guy. I absolutely refused to give the Turbo Grafx 16 a chance. If it wasn't the Sega Genesis/Sega CD, Snes, or Neo Geo it wasn't even worth my time looking at it. I thought the TG-16 was an inferior console on every level and it took many years of collecting to actually start looking at it. When Konami released the PC Engine/Core Grafx/TG-16 mini I rushed to get one as fast as I could. I wound up missing the TG-16 and got a Core Grafx. When I first started playing those games that's when it really hit me...I made a huge mistake. Thankfully, it's one I have been working on rectifying as fast as I can
    Addendum- This was a superb video and I thank you for showing me a game I'm not familiar with (Mr. Heli). When you first showed the case I was almost positive it was a spirt successor to Tiger Heli but I was mistaken. At any rate, bravo sir you have made my day and shown me another PCE game I have to pick up. ;)

    I remember Blockbuster memberships being kind of a PITA to get in the early-mid 90's, there was a ton of mom n' pop rental places that were more lax. After the 32-bit era though they were basically the only game left in town.

    Yeah, I went hard in 2021 on buying PC Engine games. I'm only going for Hu-cards because I don't have a Duo, although I do own an SSDS3. My comfort zone used to say "not over $100!" That's changed for this console...but it's very fun to collect for and I'm trying to curate a library of titles I'm into, not just random games. Also, I've been hoping for a vinyl release of the Star Parodier soundtrack, but that could be said about many PCE games! Some company needs to get on that!

    In the Rio Grande Valley in Texas, Blockbuster/Hollywood never could get a foothold. Local chains (some of which were smartly branded and well-run, with many locations) ruled the day as the smartly carried the Spanish-language movies.

    I grew up playing Life Force on the NES and I still have my old copy for that console but about 15 years ago I got Salamander for the PC Engine and it's the main version I play these days. I like NES Life Force, its a great port and it represents the American arcade version of Salamander really well incorporating the more Gradius style power up system, but Salamander is incredible and the PC Engine version is SO close to the Japanese arcade version that I'm not sure why it isn't discussed more. I have a port of the arcade original in the Salamander Deluxe Pack Plus for the Sega Saturn and I still play the PC Engine port far more. I'm glad you grabbed it man, it will forever consume you!

    I feel kind of the same way. I mean, I do have nostalgia for BB because it's part of my past, and better times, but in terms of renting games, I grew up mostly in NYC and (believe it or not) there weren't really a whole lot of BB's around until, like you said, the late nineties. Although my mom was really generous about games and usually bought my brother and I whatever game we really wanted. Another thing I don't have nostalgia for is those weird middle-Eastern electronics stores in midtown that would literally do about a 100% markup. They would sell NES games for $80 occasionally, and this was when they were usually $40 at the expensive end. You can't get away with that today because of Amazon.

    I enjoyed this video because I honestly don't know a lot about PC Engine games. As you mentioned, bithead1000 talked about Nexzer; that's how I knew a little about it. You kinda helped get out a funk of depression, snowy, COLD, cruddy day where I had to miss work. I've always liked the tone of your show; you're not trying to be funny (not saying you're not funny), meaning you're not obnoxious or too loud. You just tell us in great detail about your game and why you like it ... or don't like in the case of 1943. I could definitely see your excitement and passion increase talking about Nexzer! Man, I've always wanted to play that one. I could always get cue cards roms working, but never the CD games. But I'd love to see an ongoing series, pick 5 random PC Engine/Turbo Grafix games/roms, play them, then tell us your thoughts about them. I'm just throwing that out there. Thanks for cheering up my day!🙂

    I love your channel! Blockbuster was awesome but they were more expensive than the mom and pop video stores. I have fond memories of walking down the street to Omni Video which was my mom and pop VS. They were cheaper and much more lenient with late fees and would also hold new movies and games for you if you called them. There’s no way blockbuster put mom and pops out of business. If anything they lasted longer than Blockbuster.

    There are a couple of big game channels that do regular "pick-ups" videos. I do tend to enjoy them, but sometimes I wonder how much the content creators really enjoy doing them. I even wonder if they feel it's necessary to keep buying stuff they're not even that interested in just to have content for their channel. I don't think I could ever run a game channel for a living. The things I do and collect for the love of the hobby would probably start to feel forced.

    I'm exactly the same way with record shopping/pickup videos. I know what I'm looking for when I head to the record store and I buy with a purpose. I see tons of vinyl channels where they just buy armfulls of records, then do a pickup video ripping through all of them.

    • @CGQPlus
      @CGQPlus  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, EXACTLY. Like nothing insightful to say about any of them. I feel like a lot of people who collect, whether it’s games, vinyl, whatever, they buy what they see everyone else buy. Like when people spread their record collection all over the floor and take a pic to post to /r/vinyl, it’s mostly the same stuff as everyone else. So they don’t have anything interesting to say about it because they didn’t have much of a reason for buying it in the first place.
