  • CGS Aviation grew out of "Chuck's Glider Supplies." In the early 1970s, Chuck Slusarczyk designed, built, and sold hang gliders and various associated supplies. Shortly thereafter, he began experimenting with the powered hang glider, propelled at the time by small direct-drive go-kart engines. The propeller was bolted directly to the crankshaft of the engine and turned at high (5,000-6,000 rpm) speeds. Chuck realized that this design was not efficient.
With this shortcoming as an impetus, Chuck successfully designed and produced a power system implementing a reduction drive to turn a larger-diameter, more efficient propeller. By 1977, Chuck's Glider Supplies had become a leading manufacturer of hang gliders with a successful division producing power plants for a variety of ultralights. For his pioneering efforts, Chuck was awarded Patent No. 4.262.263, "Powered Hang Glider with Reduction Drive." By 1979, Chuck's Glider Supplies was manufacturing 80% of all drive systems used in the ultralight industry.
In October 1979, Chuck's Glider Supplies became CGS Aviation, Inc. In early 1980, CGS conducted a market study at Sun N Fun and also Oshkosh to determine the features of an ultralight most desired by pilots. The "Hawk" was the end result of that study. The first prototype took to the air in January 1982. The CGS Hawk's debut was in March 1982, at Sun N Fun air show held in Lakeland, Florida There, the findings of the market study were proven out as the Hawk took top honors, winning Best New Design for 1982. The Hawk again took top honors for Outstanding New Design and Reserve Grand Champion that same year at the EAA International Convention held in August 1982 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. One year later, again at Oshkosh, the Hawk won the prestigious Dupont Kevlar ARV (Air Recreational Vehicle) Design Competition hands down over a field of over 126 ARV designs.
When the CGS Hawk debuted in 1982, it was the first fully enclosed ultralight. It was also the first ultralight to use full strut bracing and incorporated full 3 axis controls (including conventional steerable nose or tail wheel). The CGS Hawk was also the first ultralight to utilize fully functional wing flaps. Following the Hawk's leadership, competitive designs have since followed and entered the market, but even after 32 years none of them possesses the form, function, and owner loyalty the CGS Hawk enjoys. The CGS Hawk still remains the standard of comparison for the ultralight/light aircraft industry around the world.
The CGS Hawk design definitely paved the way for others to follow, and in 1999 Chuck Slusarczyk was one of the first three ultralight pioneers inducted into the EAA Ultralight Hall of Fame during its inaugural year.

Great little plane. I built 2 of them, both arrows, kept one for several years. Fun little plane to fly, very forgiving and you always feel safe. The planes were designed so well, I could put my hands out the sides and fly it with my hands to the wind. I seldom flew with doors on, I LOVED the feeling of FLIGHT. PPL SEL

I never knew that you hold opposite aileron for a wing over but it does make sense to help stall the wing. I'm sure a lot of people ask but since I still get different answers 4 an inexperienced pilot like myself it wants to get into ultralight flying do you recommend going and getting a full light sport aircraft rating? Although I do love this plane I sort of have my heart set on a legal eagle since I like the idea of a four-stroke being a little easier on the ears and a two stroke and I hope to build one in my backyard over a couple years after I buy a house in the next year or so, though I guess I could bite the bullet and just buy used ultralight plane for 10 grand or less and be up in the air sooner aside from the whole pilot instruction part. Either way thanks for bringing this awesome footage with the live data, looking forward to more videos since I can't get enough of ultra lights

    Hey Roy,
I've been looking at those Werner radio engines because of their high-end technology and greater horsepower for their size and weight.
They make a 3 cylinder for ultralight at 38 horsepower, would that work on your model?
I've saved your video above for review, so I can relearn some things that I thought I had forgotten!

Roy. I own a MX Sprint that I recently converted to a MX Sport wing. I noticed very good speed increase but along with that came a lot more right yaw. Is this normal for the Sport vs the Sprint?? With yaw corrected with rudder, it flies perfectly straight and level hands off the stick. Is there a way to relieve the rudder pressure with some mod that I don't know about? Its quite heavy compared to the old Sprint but goes away completely when the engine is cut back for landing. I'm thinking about attaching a rudder trim tab. Any thoughts? Are you available for discussion on this??

I had a Quicksilver MX and I flew it at Lake Elsinore southern California in 1982. I was using a book to develop my flying, one section suggested that if the engine could be started from the seat, you might wish to practise this. "get to 2,000 feet, level out, throttle back and turn off the ignition, turn the ignition back on and restart the engine. Everything went OK until I tried to turn over the engine whilst holding the control column, it was just too difficult using just one hand. I didn't want to let go of the control column because it was very bumpy that day. I started to panic but as I realised I was never going to get the engine going again I switched over to actually landing the plane. The glide ratio of the MX was around 8:1 but I got it down Ok. My instructor was there and said it was a good dead stick landing but thought I had attempted it too soon in my flying career. I realised about 35 years later that if I had put the nose down to increase speed, I might have been able to turn the engine over one handed.
      Happy days.
      John.

Its my understanding that many ultra lite planes have a 12 to 1 glide ratio, the same as a Boeing 767 compared to the 10 to 1 glide ratio of a Cessna 172.

capt. Red I'm not a ultralight owner or pilot, but to me and every A&P I have asked, TRIM TAB is the correct fix, I mean there used on everything from a C-150 to a Falcon 900, only difference in your's and the Cessna to Falcon is there's is done w/power from electric to hydraulic -try it if you don't like it take it off -its not go'in to stress anything -no more then when you apply full Rudder, good luck!

You can tell from the comments AND like myself most wanna learn to fly but he says at one point in the video in regards to a ‘crab’ grip and ‘forward slip’ that we might wanna “ look these up” ?? Why not take a few more seconds of ur time and explain these things?!? So now we leave this video and “ look up” those things when if they were included in the instruction it would have been a more complete learning tool. Sorry for the rant, we all could do with less key strokes these days. Otherwise a good video thanks for posting. I’m off to find out what “crab grip” and “forward slip” are....

    • @mikeryan6277
      @mikeryan6277 3 роки тому

You crab into the wind to maintain your course. A slip, side or forward is simply a fast way to loose altitude ( usually when you are high on final ) by creating a crapload of drag on the aircraft.

The hawk slows down so fast that a high approach speed doesn’t matter much unlike a Cessna. you don’t want to fly near stall speed on approach with an ultralight in case there’s wind shear or an engine problem . They stall so quickly because they are such high drag airplanes. It’s a perfect approach speed in a hawk.

Cover anything glossy with black felt. I did it on a dashboard of a car once. It cast a reflection of the dash above the steering wheel onto the windshield. One 12x8 piece of black felt and issue fixed.

Only solution I found for this are polarised sunglasses, I use a cheap non tinted set that cost around $10 - work great. I don't think the felt will work as the instruments are what is reflecting not the "dash" like in a car.

You should be aiming for the left side. it’s kinda funny you say your using a crab and you’re completely right of the runway and barely crabbed. You needed to crab more man. The words are right, but you’re not making the airplane do as you say. And that extra speed didn’t really help ya. Slow jt the heck down and crab more. And land on the upwind side. That first go around was the correct thing to do, I probably wouldn’t have landed on that second one. Your just not controlling drift enough. 7000 hour pilot here (2100 in ultralights).

That stupid background music is totally annoying. Makes it difficult to concentrate on what you're saying.

I like the video but I agree the music is annoying. So many videos on youtube feel the need for musical noise in the background. just as a suggestion if you feel the need for it make sure it does not compete with with the narration. Nice aircraft though!

About what I expected from someone with no training. Next video is probably tragic as a result of a stall at 500ft. I'm surprised at how little people value their own lives when they do these things. Makes for entertaining watching though. I hope the pilot is still kicking today.

uglyduckling81 the pilot is a trained pilot with a license. See other videos. Many ultralight pilots have the proper training. Only a few are self taught.

Yours is an old post but worthy of a reply. The standard height for practicing ultralight stalls is 600ft agl.
