- Anime Series Leads to Raccoon Crisis in Japan | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Japan is battling a surge of destructive raccoons. A popular anime triggered Japan's raccoon problem. "Rascal the Raccoon" gained huge popularity in the 1970s Japan. So, people began importing raccoons to keep them as pets. About 1,500 raccoons were imported every year until the early 2000s. And now, they are wreaking havoc in 44 out of 47 Japanese prefectures. They are destroying crops and infrastructure. Now, Japan calls raccoons "invasive alien creatures". Tokyo has declared war on raccoons with hotlines and traps. But can Japan win this war? After all, raccoons quickly multiply and adapt to different environments. Can Japan fix its raccoon problem? Palki Sharma brings you the report.

@@kazegarasu4704 My lord, you've just won the internet today, my stomach hurts...
No cuz they wanted them as pets nobody told them to keep them
Is this comment a joke? I really don’t understand the illogical hatred for the US on this issue specifically. We hate raccoons they are pests here in the states. And we have no idea why Japan wanted them but they did. Please use reason when you speak.
Don't know about the Raccoons being rascals but the people who import exotic animals from halfway across the world as pets and decades later declare war on them for "upsetting" the ecosystem are plain stupid!
Yes. Florida made the same mistake with those lizard things. Now they are up for bounty and hunted with air guns.
American and Australians: First time?
Seriously, when is the world going to learn how stupid this is?
@achinism
I have always found it interesting how we in America are not allowed to house or keep native animals yet it’s perfectly fine to import them to other countries it makes no sense.
Quiet stupid if you ask me.
I say let it be allowed to care for native wild life and not important species that are not found in the area.
Not the fault of the raccoons! 🙎🏻♂️
never is!
Yeah but something has to be done
Humans are also invasive species harming already established local flora and fauna
We had a raccoon infestation in the northeast US in the early nineties until nature took care of it with a raccoon rabies epidemic that killed over 90% of them, thus putting nature back in balance. Something that we learned back then was that raccoon fecal matter can contain a parasite that is very bad for people.
Japan is a country free of rabies thanks to being an archipelago 😅
Raccoon hunting is still a sport that is popular in America. Don’t ever buy into the propaganda against hunting. Unless we allow large predators back in, then hunting is necessary.
Japan: We have a problem with raccoons.
Toronto: Eh, Really? You don't say.
They love cities and are everywhere. Here in Los Angeles they are more numerous than squirrels, almost. I don't mind them, except when they fight.
@@Metal0sopher or when they are start having parties at around 3 am and you have to work next day.
1:44 raccoon is like "you want some of dis, beach?"
This is why you don’t mess with the natural ecosystem. Things belong where they do because that’s how evolution works
except for humans, no? we deserve to be everywhere
@@migspeculatesthat’s not the case we aren’t suited for everywhere either. An Asian like me won’t be suited for Canadian winters as well as Europeans.
@@ksoh1oe276 - Aren't Eskimos Asian? Don't Asians live in very cold places like the Himalayas? Anyway Darwinian evolution is a joke, and raccoons are thriving in Japan so apparently they can adapt to any environment.
@@azul93gt38 by the looks of it, you are a lady who finds raccoons cute, I don’t think I’ll be able to convince you but still I’ll try.
1. Aren’t eskimos Asian?- you just described a huge demographic with just a minority of people. Asia ranges from humid places like Indonesia all the way to cold places like Russia(yes some part of Russia is Asia). Even people very close to each other have adapted differently. Someone from Himachal Pradesh(India) is more adapted to cold than someone in Delhi. A person in Delhi is more adapted to handling pollution than someone from Himachal.
2.Many asians live in Himalaya- someone from Tibet, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu can live in Himalayas, I, from Delhi can’t. And we are both Asians.
3.Darwin’s theory is a joke- yeah I agree, there are loopholes in it.
3. Raccoons are thriving in Japan so they have adapted- This is where I disagree with you the most and would like you to change your opinion. Raccoons are INVASIVE SPECIES to Japan. Just search on the internet what happened when European starlings(birds) native to Europe were introduced to America, they WRECKED THE ECOSYSTEM
. Invasive species are harmful because they kill native animals of the place, they plummet resources and if uncontrolled they breed rapidly. There’s a reason why it is suggested not to release fishes like goldfish, guppies into rivers and lakes. You can further look into it on the internet
You don't understand evolution
2 countries declared war against a specific animal and lost, Japan better be prepared

More like people doesn't care much about nature in those years, it's the 70s man.
I thought Japan wasn't allowed to declare war 😂
Yes they can
They will have a LOT of trouble getting rid of Racoons. Without larger predators like wolves, the racoon will thrive. They are bright and VERY adaptive.
Europe has brown bears and wolves, and racoons are taking over Germany and France anyway.
Before looking at Japan, please mention India's stray dog menace. Every day people die of stray dog attacks. Value of life is getting lesser and lesser in India with each passing day.
There is 1.4 billion population 😂😂😂😂
Yes, khalist@nis increasing day by day is a menace for India 🇮🇳

That’s scary especially if the dogs have rabies.
Dogs are also feeling the same emotions as you. Due to humans that their population is dwindling.
Japan better have a plan if they're ballsy enough to take on the Federation

I just saw a Lost in the Pond video about racoons and then refreshed UA-cam to see this lol
1:45 that racoon posing like a gangsta 😎
Please note that the anime only had an indirect effect. Japan already has a mythical animal called the tanuki that brings good luck and fortune. Raccoons fit the bill and are the closest in terms of appearance. The anime just increased awareness about raccoons.
No tanuki is based on real native animal -Japanese raccoon dog (Nyctereutes viverrinus)
Tanuki is based on the native raccoon dog.
These videos are not from Japan.
Exactly, random videos of raccoons

Yes. Person speaking English gave it away.
They akready has red panda why this circus never import animals from its geographical location mother earth did not birth them there for a intelligent reason
They already had tanuki (which look like raccoons but are closer genetically to dogs) so there were two reasons why American raccoons didn't need to be there.
@sacredflames Red pandas are not native to Japan. They are native to Nepal and China.
Watching Japanese cartoons as a kid, I was of the impression that Raccoons were a native species of Japan. It was only very recently when I realised that they were also found in North America, which made me wonder how these animals got to the distant continent. And now my mind is boggled to know that not only are Raccoons native to NA and not to Japan, they are also an invasive species over there!
The prime example of how to conquer a place with *cuteness*
Raccoons are illegal to have as pets in the Netherlands.
Well that's what happens when you import creatures with no native enemy.
Solution: Introduce an apex predator that loves to eat raccoons. I guess Japan needs to fall in love with the anime Wolf's Rain. Government needs to start promoting this anime lol
Japan is very sensible to ecological disaster since they have no natural predators, they used to have wolves till they drove them to extinction.
It is against the law in many states in the U.S. to have raccoons as pets. And they are as smart as monkeys by the way. Incredibly self-aware.
Too bad so many people deliberately feed them.
I'm literally shocked.... Pom Poko 1994 by Studio Ghibli is one of my favourite film's .... and your telling me Raccoons are not even native ..... I'm shocked. stunned. wow. glad too find out. total stunning..
They seriously did this over an anime cartoon importing entirely different species to there country a wild animal

The raccoon footage is not from Japan. Incidentally, it's not even talked about in Japan. w

I'm surprised they let them keep importing raccoons or were they smuggled in?
Australia have a similar problem with the foxes, cats, rabbits and boars.
Greetings from Paraguay and God bless.
We kind of have a similar problem here in the USA. We wanted to get rid of the American alligator because there are too many so we introduced the Burmese Python. Now we have giant snakes AND giant lizards

Germany has a racoon problem, too.
Oh! This reminds me of the emu war of australia.
Now they're gonna make an anime about this
I think this is also happening in my country but in form of Trees.... So we have this Mahogany trees that are not native in our lands... Without knowing it can disturb other trees and plants surrounding it... And some people not knowledgeable about it.
ironically, the anime ends with his owner letting Rascal go to the forest, because he realizes (you guessed it) that racoons are not pets.
I knew this day would come! POM POKO!
Next Japanese/Anime movie hit: Rise of the Planet of the Raccoons.
We have to understand that the entire ecosystem is in a tipping phase where everything will multiple with 7x times using the 1:7 Theory. The nature is entering into a catastrophic zone but before it happens the ecosystem is preparing itself in the best possible manner. From seedling outburst to raccoon growing population, everything will multiple and then a catastrophic event, neutralizing everything. The time is limited, the only message we wish to convey is preserve the genetic resources now.

Raccoons are one of the species you do not introduce to your country
The way the reporter is reporting on the matter sounds like an anime dub itself.
People outside Japan confuse raccoons & tanukis (raccoon-dogs) as same animal.
Btw, raccoon-dogs are invasive in Europe.
Are raccoon or raccoon dogs similar? Because there are animals raccoon in Western countries.
I thought this video was going to be about some heinous raccoon shonen villain.

Dear Palki Sharma,
As managing director, do you review all the presentations that carry your name on UA-cam? Go through the clips on this report, and truthfully tell me what you see and hear about "invasive species".
I see and hear something different and honestly, I was drawn to a "hidden" aspect of this report, besides the wild raccoon in Japan, rodent, snail ... and yes, if the topic is "invasive species" (clips of bustling African (?) community), then perhaps the author and narrator is himself carefully looking in the mirror, and then thinking of whether he has the right (as one in many invasive species) to stand on the soil he currently occupies.
Indians, this what they do.
