I am awed by the beating that thing took before it broke. I bought the A979B fully expecting that I wasn't going to run it without upgrading. I bought an aluminum upgrade kit, but decided to give it a go, before doing anything. It lasted 3 seconds before the rear suspension arm snapped, and that was just the first thing. After repairing that, I tried again, and caught the corner of a chair, at a very modest speed, and the front steering arm broke. I still haven't used all of the aluminum upgrade parts, but the entire suspension has been replaced. I junked the electronics, and put in an ESC, brushless motor, and metal servo, and it's now a formidable beast. I have a 6oz (170 Gram) tire weight as a front bumper, and it will still flip over if I punch it on a fresh battery. Got the truck for $55, ESC $14, Motor $12, Servo $5, Aluminum upgrade kit $30. I had a set of buggy wheels from a 1/12 scale, that I swapped out from the stock wheels. Still - The entire upgrade cost less than $120. It was worth every penny.
I bought that car a year ago and it got me into the hobby. The truck version is nice as well. I upgraded a lot of aluminum parts on it and it really can take a beating. The 1/18 Castle fits it too
Was it not a brushless motor on this car he show? Its look same as my motor. And they said it was a brushless 🙂 But i am noob and newbeginner when it Come to rc cars 🙂
They can’t buy the expensive stuff cus it’s kids, this is a great first rc for the kids for sure, this was the rc I went to buy last Halloween that got me in the hobby at the end of last year. I ended up getting the redcat volcano18 for same price, at Best Buy of all places, carry’s redcat, great vid Kev
Those little cars can be super fun, I've got a 1/18 Dromida buggy running a Castle 0808- 8200kv brushless motor, Mamba Micro X on 3s lipo. It's freaking awesome, had to run Spektrum radio and receiver with AVC to keep it manageable at full throttle....
Great review. I’ve had a lot of fun too, running, testing and filming the A959-B. Also got a video that will answer the question about the oil and the shocks 😃
I've owned several wltoys rcs ranging from 1:32 to 1:10 sizes, the 1:18 versions are one of the strongest. My all time favourite is the Wltoys L979 which I converted to brushless 5000kv motor and 35A esc its a 1:12 scale 2wd and a blast to drive
I've had really great experiences with my cheapo RC's. I grabbed one of the LRP Blast BX2 brushless buggies off gearbest, and it goes near-enough 40mph on a 3s lipo. Has a bunch of aluminum parts on it, haflway-decent oil shocks, etc. Hell of a car for $150. Also check out the WLToys 10428 and 12428. 1/10 and 1/12 scale clones of the Vaterra Twin Hammers. They both have a super-flexy solid axle out back with independent suspension up front, but the 10428 has a hi/lo transfer case. Can do crawler stuff, and fast enough to be fun to bash around rough terrain. My only complaints are that it's slow, and that it uses a combination rx/esc with 5 wire servos, so you have to replace everything if you want to make it brushless/fast. The 12428 lacks the 3rd channel for the hi/lo box, so it's easier to throw a new servo/rx/esc in it.
I've got a WL Toys A797B ...which being the "B" is one of their upgraded faster models..but if anything...it's to fast..!!! makes it tricky to control..but as you say..for the money..you can't go wrong..great fun...
With cheap hobby brands like wltoys the models are fast for the price but upgrading them causes problems with handling and parts break fast when you upgrade to brushless, 3s lipo, ext. The stock parts of the cars aren't meant to handle high voltage lipos and brushless motors since most of their gears are plastic (i had to replace the diff in my model 3 times since there are a limited amout of metal upgrades). So if you are thinking about buying one to upgrade you might want to check the prices and the limits on spare parts so you don't spend more than what a higher quality car is worth.
That's what people don't understand is that yeah you can buy replacement parts for it but companies like mip, HR, and proline don't make parts for wltoys so getting good upgrades is impossible.
i like the jjrc q36... cost me £29 delivered off feebay... proportional steering and throttle... does around 20 mph... comes with a little 400mah lipo... 4wd... i got 3 of them 1 for me, 1 for my son and 1 for spare parts... only needed to change 2 dogbones but i did switch out the servo for a metal geared one... the spare i locked the diffs on and added black tape to the wheels and it drifts fairly well... well worth a review... parts are dirt cheap... i spent £2.90 on 12 spare dogbones from china...
Just got the Wltoys k989 and damn I'm super impressed. I got it for some room action and I can only recommend this thing. It's pure fun and can take it when you drive it against a tableleg or another heavy object I don't know how many times tho but for it's price it's just great :D
They actully make some very nice parts for these cars now...ive got the 979 modle and its sweet ive done about 10 upgrades for it ...very well built now and it's very fast...
Id like to see a series like this where you upgrade this on the downtime of other cars. Do things like put a brushless motor in and upgrade shocks and whatnot.
Absolute nonsense, this is the whole problem with RC elitism summed up in one post. Someone who not only doesn't own the item they criticise but can't be bothered to spend 2 minutes on google where they would find out what they are about to post isn't true.
Kevin it is actually 100% safe to stick a screwdriver in the earth part of the socket, when you stick a screwdriver into the other two, that is when you are looking for a hair raising experience. 😄
Welcome to the cheap hobby side :) You should drop a brushless kit (there are tons), get oil shocks, and put some metal somewhere and see how it does then :)
When Kev said that cheap rc is bad he didn’t know what was coming his way in the cheap world of rc, like the jlb cheetah ,bison, vrx cobra. especially those wl toys
While we're at it..... Here's a fork, stick that in the toaster while holding an umbrella ☔ during the lightning storm 🌩 as you stand in a bucket of water 😂😂😂
I have a traxxas trx4 a latrax Teton and a rc4wd trailer. I also have a wltoys a979 which has the same body but different body posts and body shell, I had lots of wheel wobble and when I did donuts in the dirt it killed to motor. I can tell what is a good hobby grade and what is a bad hobby grade.
So you got the B version with the 540 sized motor not the A version with the 380 sized motor? quite cool aren't they im going to buy one for my collection in a few days just got to decide on the truck or buggy. Im used to my traxxas and losi and kyosho trucks so this will be a nice cheap little runner
K, maybe I’m biased but if you’re going to get one, consider getting something a bit more expensive unless you like working on your car a lot. We have 3. They are fast. I have 2 “50kmh” and one “70 kmh”. This car to me is similar to a Honda Civic with a Chevy v8. Tons of motor, fast, with weak little parts that will break with minimal contact. I would not recommend this to a new rc enthusiast. I enjoy 1/18 stuff, have these 3 and a few other 1/18 pro pulse trucks from the 2000s. We’re 2 broken chassis in 1 week on the wl toys, 1 broken shock, shock mount, 3 cracked wheels, dead differential. I don’t mind working on them but I wouldn’t recommend them to a new driver. We also have a traxxas bandit xl5. I spent roughly $65 on the wl, you can get a traxxas bandit for just about double. Do it. We have launched the bandit in the lake on accident, sand runs, snow bashing hitting curbs in freezing weather. A lipo battery give you half hour run time in the bandit. Hate to sound like a fanboy, but if you’re really on a budget and are new, get something like the traxxas bandit. You’ll spend in parts on the WL in a month or 2 what you could buy the bandit for. Not trying to hate on WL stuff, I like 1/18 and plan on doing full aluminum etc for mine, but they are unique and I wouldn’t recommend them if you haven’t worked or played with rc stuff a lot
2:41 there is the right way to do things and there is the Kev way to do things. Your savage
I am awed by the beating that thing took before it broke. I bought the A979B fully expecting that I wasn't going to run it without upgrading. You should start a series where you put huge amounts of power through cheep small rcs 😂
griffin taylor that would be insane
You my friend are a genius
Smari McKinstry even better use a fisher price rc “car”
Ja
Good spelling
I bought that car a year ago and it got me into the hobby. The truck version is nice as well. I upgraded a lot of aluminum parts on it and it really can take a beating. The 1/18 Castle fits it too
A979 b? 🙂
Put a brushlessss motor in it and make it fly

@@squat224 Thanks.👍
The flat head screw driver in the power socket convinced me to subscribe. Now that's dedication to customer service.

Epic unboxing Kevin Talbot!!!
Not a bad rc for the price. Perfect for kids just starting out. I might buy a couple to race around the driveway.✌️
Yeah these wltoys a959a are pretty good, try the faster a959b model with the bigger 540 brushed motor Kevin
The thing could use a front bumper, then it would be really really durable! Seems like a tough little RC.
I have this car... did a bunch of upgrades... and it runs great!!! I will upgrade the motor soon

That little thing isn't to shabby. Haha couple upgrades for durability and maybe even a brushless system and she'll go to the moon!!! Hahaha
Hahahahahahahahahaha, try running 4s😂😂
Put a stroon brusles set in it and send it tho the moon
will this be part of your bash squad

Brett Ward although it would be cool it would be nonstop replacement parts because the drivetrain cannot handle brushless power.

Great little entry car for kids before spending loads of money!
Did you ever fix the steering angle of the tires? The alignment that is..
My girlfriends sister has this exact car, it's actually very good for the price point, highly recommend to beginners.
I bought that car and the short course version and I tell ya they are tough and super fast for so cheap !!!
Good little rocket surprised it went so well on grass and dirt.
Kevin. You should do a budget upgrade series for this to make it even better.
Are you going to,use iT more often and put in a mini brushless combo?
Thanks!

Would you like to do a video where you max it out with upgrades? I’m curious how it would turn out. Nice video btw!

Did you get this from bang good and how long did the dilvery take???
Get some Aluminium upgrades to it and Metal gears 👌
I bought one today It'll be here in 9 days, cant wait!
edit: just got here took a lot longer than I thought lol
Can you convert it to a brushless system
Is the a959-a a downgrade from the a959? Apparently is slower than the original a959
On xmaxx 6s if you want to upgrade to 8s diffs is it a direct fit on will I need 8s bulkheads
front and rear diffs fit straight in all you need is crownwheel and pinion
liking shutter stop xx
Try the a979 b its super fast if you can control it...
Can you try the wltoys a12428?
Will you do any RC boat videos?
4:53 why the random “0” ??? Lol
My brother has one and took it out for a bashing the only thing that broke was the solder on the battery came off
Please do a video where you upgrade it I bought one and I want to see what parts I can put on it
Try the wltoys 12428 b or just the 12428
Rustler or kit buggy?
