I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS. Your commentary on this show, mixed with naming what the techniques they use in the show are has been so helpful to me, who began studying kyokushin karate in December. I'm glad you are back with more commentary!
Man, I missed this. I love your input as a karateka and a Japanese man. The kata you’re asking is called Seiyunchin in Goju and there is a Goju old master named Seikichi Toguchi from Naha, Okinawa Thanks
As to the bow, I know it's not accurate in Japan, but it goes back to the first movie where Miyagi told Daniel to "Look eye. Always look eye". That's why they do it that way.
My Karate sensei (who to be fair was not Japanese) taught me to bow in the same way. Would sometimes give us a cheap shot (tap) to the head if we forgot it. Until I watched these videos I assumed that was how people bowed in Karate.
"Silver" (Thomas Ian Griffith) holds a black belt in Taekwondo and in Kumite. Just so you know. Most of the older actors hold black belts and above, in one or other martial arts. As usual, great to enjoy and learn from you, Sensei.
Not true, Thomas Ian Griffith is one of the only main actors that has a black belt. Ralph Macchio (Daniel) has said numerous of times he doesn’t even know Karate, outside of Cobra Kai and Karate Kid, William Zabka (Johnny) has a green belt, about halfway till Black. So besides Thomas Ian Griffith, none are actual black belts.
@@XRos28 Yes, but not many Cobra Kai actors who do. just because they know in the show, doesn’t mean anything. you’d be surprised how many in the show don’t have any martian arts relations.
@jacobmoore6315 yeah green belt is the highest Lawrence got to before starting cobra kai. But he got back to training since cobra kai started. ..so he is probably better now. And yeah Ralph apparently never got a former belt but I'd guess he has training beyond a white belt level at this point.
Ahhh I've been looking forward to your reactions! I'm not a martial artist (one day, hopefully), but I love hearing martial artists talk about stunt work, and your insights into the Japanese culture differences and character moments add so much to the experience.
At 7:50, Chozen hitting the piece of wood is a call back to Karate Kid 2 and Sato, Chozen’s mentor. We’re first introduced to Sato in almost the exact same way, with the camera focused on the wood, the hand coming down to hit it, and then pulling back to reveal Sato, with Daniel and Mr. Miyagi walking up from the same direction. It’s a fun bit of franchise continuity.
It's been a long time. Good to have you back watching this. Concerning the hand movements you showed at the end - related but unrelated - I train in a modified version of 5 ancestor fist (ngo cho kun) from Indonesia - 18 luohan hands. Has a lot of white crane techniques. However, unlike white crane and 5 ancestor fist, in the Sam Chien, the arms are completely twisted in. It places maximum strain on the tendons and, combined with the tension in the muscles and the breathing, strengthens the body.
Glad to see you back, Sensei! As for the eye contact in the bows (in US/this series), I think their point has always been "don't lose your oponent off your sight", so while they do it like this, it means they don't trust each other. Later on, when the three of them bow to each other, they look down. I love the differencies in the dojos in bowing especially before each fight, while Miyagi students always go into deeper bow, showing respect, Cobra Kai (also Miguel at the first final fight with Robbie) makes quick, small bows like "just because we need to". Excited for how it will look at Seikai Taikai.
Bruce Lee said , " Never take your eye off opponent even when you bow . " It must have been a combat mindset which a lot of people have because of sneaky evil people .
I think he got a strike for this. It's been almost 2 weeks now. Isn't it true u can get a strike and can't use your youtube for 2 weeks ? I could be wrong, I hope so
This was exactly how I was taught to bow in taekwondo. As soon as you step on the mat you never take your eyes off the opponent so you bow while maintaining eye contact.
12:20 When I did kendo in college, my sensei explained to us that when you bow, you bow in such a way that you keep your neck straight, but you bow just low enough that you can still see the other person from your peripheral vision. So you ARE still looking at the other person, but just not so directly. He explicitly told us NOT to look forward while bowing, "like in karate or taekwondo" in his words. He was a Japanese-American guy but I think he spent most of his life in America, so I think he was going off of what he's seen in American karate dojos where they do that "look forward" bow like in the show. On the other hand, I trained in a VERY American-style karate dojo when I was 17, and we were told that you have to look forward when you bow because the other person could hit you while you're not looking. I knew that was not the custom in Japan, so I pointed that out, and they just responded "well we're not in Japan".
Good morning. At about 6:10 in the video, you make a motion of an upper and lower block and say it may be from Goju Ryu. You are correct. That technique is from Seiyunchin kata. Good to see you again. Thank you for ALL of your videos.
I love your videos Yusuke! I train in shūkōkai a variant of shitō-ryū and that move at 5:46 that sam does, is in some of our katas, specifically Seienchin off the top of my head.
I've seen them do a (not the best) Seiunchin Kata from Goju, so I think a decent amount of Goju influence. The reference to Miyagi is also a clue as the founder of Goju is Chojun Miyagi. The question you asked about the position of the hands I've seen both, but the way we teach it the hands are back to back, the bunkai is someone's grabbed you by the lapels, and you're bring your hands inside to grab theirs and break the hold.
5:48 Seiyunchin/ Seiechin (lots of different spellings) is the Goju-Ryu kata they have done throughout the series starting from Karate Kid 3 I am a Goju-Ryu practitioner myself and immediately recognized the kata however it has been tweaked and modified a little bit in the show.
I used to know a Shotokan Sensei in Memphis, TN. That is a very different style from my discipline of Gung Fu. My Sifu was Bruce Wong from Kaifeng, China. I made it to 1st degree black sash before I became unable to spar, due to illness.
Thanks a lot for that! It's always great fun to watch Cobra Kai "with" you 🤗 I had to laugh out lot on your comment about bowing and looking in the eyes at the same time. It really feels uncomfortable by just seeing it 😂😂😂
If there was anything I was looking forward to more than this new season, was your reaction to it. Mainly due to you being able to balance out your critiques of the actors martial arts prowess, and critiques of the actual show overall. Though, I do think this season was a little weak overall, I'm still looking forward to part 2.
Love watching you in the OG Indiana Jones film& current Loki series, how did you keep yourself that young without showing your age now, even on a youtube channel show?.
13:11 The bowing while looking at your opponent has been in many martial arts films. Usually a student will look down when they bow and the teacher will correct them for it and say "never take your eyes off your oponnent." Bruce Lee does this when teaching the kid in this movie (the scene that ends with him using the finger pointing at the moon analogy), and in the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the one of the main villains Tatsu says "Never lower your eyes to an enemy" when the student bows without looking at the enemy. Dunno if it's a culture difference or just Hollywood invention.
love the new uniform design i hope we can purchase them soon. . also love th fact that symbolically its the start of a unified school soo all three sensei will teach the same stuff. not 3 different schools in 1 yard.. Hence the students being white belts now. its hte start of a real unified dojo.
Master Yusuke, regarding the bowing way that you mentioned. When I was training Taekwondo in Iraq, my master taught us that if you bow to an opponent you look them in the eye but if you bow to a sensei then you put your eyes down. Could this be the reason why they do that in the tv show since they are equal/peers masters then they do look each other in the eye. Could this be taken out of the culture of Korea by any chance since American Karate originates from Tang Soo Do culture?
Do you have a video of you free sparring/kumite against some one? I really would like to see a jyu kumite video of you fighting and then making comments about strategies that you used and why. Oss
I didnt notice the eagle on the new logo that's a nice touch and yet johnny still gonna be johnny can't win with him... I love the fact that this guy roasts the shows inauthenticity
Having lived in Japan I was so culture shocked that they now looking down. Because I felted betrayed by Mr. Miyagi He taught “Always look eye!!! As Karate Kid 1 taught us. But it’s rude to do that in Japan so I had to adapt. Even though I would teach Japanese that Mr. Miyagi can’t be wrong.
I love how they are always a white belt, until a tournament comes along.
In this episode "Stingray" had a yellow belt, but he not at "Miyagi-Do", he was at the creek... 🤪
White belt keeps you humble.
colors mean nothing
The students were professional fighters since day one
They don't use belt progressions cuz I'm guessing most ppl who watch the show don't know that much Abt karate
I always look forward to your Cobra Kai reactions, it’s cool to get someone’s impressions from a martial arts background.
I'm a Karate Sensei in California. As with everything from Hollywood a mix of reality and fantasy.

Kumite isn't a martial arts discipline. It's a part of karate training, so you can't have a black belt in "kumite".

Thomas Ian Griffin is a legit black belt in Tae Kwon Do. IIRC, he also is a black belt in Kenpo.

Where r the other reactions
Sensei! Post episode 2
We're back indeed.
We're back! Actually how I've found your channel.
Season 5 was September 2022.
They be leveling up from white to black in every tournament
It would be cool if you would breakdown Lidia Sobieska’s karate from Tekken 8! She uses a lot of defensive parries
Something crazy happens in every episode after this, especially 2 and 3, so have fun lol
When is Episode 2 reaction coming out?
we back!
I've also noticed in the quality increase.
I already watched all 5 episodes and I'm really disappointed in one of the fighters not making it in the sekai taikai

Toguchi was Satou's nephew, and Satou grew up in Okinawa, so it's possible he is a transplant.

I'm looking forward to seeing Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan together in the new Karate Kid movie. I do wish William Zabka had been included, though.

They have white belts tell the tournament the reason is because in karate kid 1 they need a brown belt or higher
