I still have my Sony SLV-720HF VCR that I bought in August 1996. I had to have the cassette loading mechanism repaired in 2005 but outside of that it still works fine as does my JVC HR-S3900U VCR from 2001. I have a lot of VHS tapes in my collection. Thanks for the informative video here 👍

As a VCR tech 20- years ago we hated seeing those come in for service. That family was just poorly engineered and parts were crazy expensive. The capstan motor design was not designed to last.

I have a very similar model to this one named the Sony SLV-775HF. And surely enough, it still works despite it being older than me (it first released in 1996; I was born in 2001).

Woah man nice that literally is exactly like a dejavoo moment hehe... oh man does having grown up with memory of using an ifrared remote commander that itself also had a rotatable/twisting motion capable mechanism for the fast forward/rewind function in fact I remember being taught how to change the belt or fix it via the use of a rubber band... thankful for that memory and experience looking back- kinda makes one wish the vcr designs of the noughties and 2010-june 2016 era vcr designs were not of a so much of a diffuculty or fickle to disassemble enough to acquire acess to the required parts for maintanence or repair and fixing of it to be hopefully as long lived as possibly can be acquired out of such a device... oh did you jear of a movie about someboy getting sucked into a tv or a vcr... if I recall I heard about one called... V.H.S... it even came on that and blu ray

Real time counters require either full or partial lacing in FF and RW so as to keep the tape in contact with the control head. This is a nice feature but does put more wear and tear on the tape compared to older machines that put the tape back in the shell. More modern tapes were designed with this in mind.

I found with my Samsung, which also had the real time counter, it uses that head to read the time off the tape. If you recorded something on an older vcr that time feature didn't work. That time feature also introduced the high speed rewind-fast forward because it knew when it was approaching the end of the tape

Would have love something like that back in the day. All I had was a 2 headed Emerson VCR. Low quality with mono sound. It worked for about 10 years though despite me putting it through hell and back a number of times.

Yeah... some things are amazing how much of a good run they show us even after having been though the wear of being part of our childhood... and also wondering how I never realized tracking was never anhthing I knew of for however many years old I was when I figured out what the concept pertaining to a vcr is... hehehe I guess I just was unaware of the exostence so much that I obviously had not realized before just now that even the emerson fwv404? Model has presumably auto trakcing if it does I assume... it uses channel buttons on the front for trakcing as well

Hi, may I ask a question:
I have Model SLV-E710VC but the mechanics inside seem to be of similar build.
It worked very well until last week the cassette got stuck. It won´t come out anymore.
I cut the tape and got the cassette out somehow by hand, nothing seemed damaged due to that.
Looking inside the machine from the top/front the sled seems to hang on the right side.
Do you have an idea what part ist stuck and how to get it fixed?
    thx in advance

6:17 - May I give you a small tip? One thing about that design of that style pinch roller, is that it is essential to keep that post that the pinch roller travels up and down lubricated. I've seen those pinch roller posts get gummed up causing the pinch roller to jam in operation.

Man thats some pretty close to nostalgic memory for a similae model I used in the early noughties and in fact what makes it stick is it was one fhat the year when I set the clock meh rents stated that it was so old the year "Will not go any closer to right date" then at that time in sometime in the late noughties was cause it was not apparently anticipated by the manufacturer for it to last over a 5?, or 8 year span much less an over a decade span.

I have the very similar SLV-E700 and indeed it is very high quality with rock-steady tracking, pause and search. I actually owned one at college (paying it off over 4 years!) but it started aging badly about 10 years later with many mechanical faults. Thankfully I managed to find another one from eBay last year, paid £30 for it, but that too was faulty and stank of tobacco. But I didn't mind because just before I picked that up, I'd won another one for £1 on eBay - and THAT one (the one I paid £1 for) was in perfect condition. So I considered I'd actually paid £31 for the good one.

I've actually tried a Sony SLV-675HF, which looked really good but the problem was, it snapped a tape. Why do some VCRs do this? My Hitachi VT-F391A doesn't make a clunking sound when its finished rewinding. And one tape I rewound with the sony VCR I had to manually fast forward it myself to get it to play in my Hitachi VCR, since the mechanism delays playing a tape until it's past the clear leader tape, but it just ejected it instead of playing because of how far back the tape was rewound.

ST. Louis here too. :-) Has anyone ever considered replacing the existing NTSC Analog Tuner with an ATSC Digital tuner? I just purchased a SLV795HF VCR from eBay this week. There are three digits in the VCR's display, which would allow digital numbers to displayed. For our Heroes and Icons station, would appear as 244 (24.4), without the dot of course. I know, I could purchase a separate Digital to Analog converter box, but that is just too much bulk. What are your thoughts.

The first (and only) VCR we got when I was a kid (Christmas 1988) was a General Electric VG-7720 (manufactured by Panasonic). It wasn't a high-end machine; about $250 at the time, but it did have 4 heads and HQ circuitry. It is most notable for being the first line of VCRs to have onscreen programming/display, which everyone soon copied. Also, like your Sony, it had a perfectly clear/stable still-frame function, and it had a slow-motion function which was perfectly clear too. On top of that, it had the cleanest picture of any VHS machine I've ever used; a very smooth picture with no noticeable video noise. I don't know why; maybe it had the full implementation of the HQ circuitry rather than the half-implementation that most of them had.
It was far from perfect though. For starters, it didn't have Hi-Fi Stereo. That didn't matter to me as a kid, because I didn't know anything about it, but it would matter to me now. Also, it didn't have any AV inputs, only outputs, so when using it to copy off rented tapes, it could only be used as the playback machine along with a machine that had AV inputs. The most annoying thing was that it had hardly any functions on the VCR itself; no display of any kind (not even a clock) and no fast forward or rewind buttons. All those functions were on the rather large remote control. The clock (as well as the tape counter) could be displayed onscreen, but that's not as handy as just being able to look at the VCR whenever to see what time it is.
I used it regularly up until 2001 when I got a DVD drive for my PC, and semi-regularly until I got a standalone DVD player in 2006. It was around that time that I noticed you could no longer set it to the proper date, because the built-in calendar only went to 12/31/2006, after which it rolled back to 01/01/1987. I guess the manufacturer didn't expect anyone to still be using it 20 years later.
I dragged it out of the closet the other day to see if it still works, but it has issues. The blue screen that comes up when you turn it on has some motion in it, which is probably due to a bad B+ filter capacitor. When I played a tape in it, at first the picture was so full of static that you could barely see anything, and then there was no picture at all, so I'm guessing that the heads are extremely dirty. I'll probably just let it rest in peace. I don't have any use for a VCR these days, and I haven't for over a decade. Plus, I have a Zenith 4-head, Hi-Fi, HQ VCR that still works fine, though its picture has never been as clean as that GE's was when it was working properly, and it doesn't have a perfect still-frame either.

Maxim, thank you for spending the time to share your memories. My first experience with a VCR was when my uncle bought one...he was the first in the family to have one, right around 1986. It was a SHARP. He later traded someone for a Panasonic camera/VCR combo unit which we made funny home movies with. The first VCR I bought myself was from JCPenneys and was a STEREO, not HiFi audio player.

JVC was always willing to license VHS to anyone (including Sony once they swallowed their pride), which was a factor in their success over Sony's Betamax. Also, Betamax wasn't even a real rival for very long. They were in the '70s, but hardly anyone could afford a VCR of any kind in the '70s. By the time VCRs really started becoming mainstream in the early '80s, it was because of VHS. By '81, VHS already had about 75% market share, and by the mid '80s it was over 90%.

I have a Sony pretty close to this one, it took me awhile to figure it out. It really has ALL speeds SP, LP and EP, but it depends on the system you chose to record. SP and LP for Pal, SP and EP for NTSC. LP and EP on these machines are almost identical in quality and tape consumption. Later Panasonics, if I remember correctly, used all 3 speeds for any system. EP was very poor.

If you look back at the Betamax VCR’s that Sony made in the 1970’s, Beta 1 was the actual speed since the very beginning. Then came Beta 2 and Beta 3 are the other tape speeds, and Beta 1 was never included on later Betamax VCR’s.

Sony usually did the Betamax VCR’s back in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Sony discontinued by the early part of the 1990’s when they made the VHS VCR and continued right up until the 2000’s along with the combo unit that has a DVD player.

It's a new made vcr ... almost at the end of vhs era. Unshielded psu , simple mechanism , no manual adjust of sound level ....
    Nothing special ...
