  • How does the Gospel live out as we interact and experience community with the elderly, either within our homes or the local church?
This sermon explores what the Gospel requires of us as those changed by Christ to be people altogether different than the world in which we live.

We have a been blessed by God with a nursing home ministry. I love them. Knowing I will be that age soon, I would love for someone to remember me then.

Thank you so much for the sermon! I am 45 years old and taking care of my 90 year old grandmother with mid-stage dementia. It is exhausting! It is expensive! It is overwhelming, restricting, and defeating. But, I want desperately to walk her to the end of this life and into the arms of Jesus in a home full of family, then in a nursing home by herself. I am wearing thin after two and a half years of constant care and supervision. I was looking for encouragement and support from the word of God. Your sermon blessed me today! Thank you!

Hello Danielle (I hope I have the spelling correct).
Thank you for your feedback on the sermon preached so long ago. My heart goes out to you and I thank the Lord that as you seek to care for your grandmother in a godly way that honours the Lord, you seek guidance from His Word and are honest about the struggle you are experiencing in the care you provide.
From your two UA-cam videos on this subject I am convinced that more needs to be done in the preaching of the Word to encourage and support carers like yourself. I am thankful to the Lord you found my sermon helpful but am saddened that I have not preached more on this subject, nor preached to the needs of the carers more specifically. You have challenged me to consider doing a series of sermons on this subject.
Just recently I attended the funeral of a member of the church that oversights the outreach mission I lead. For many years he suffered dementia. His wife cared for him at home until the level of care he needed was beyond her ability to provide. The important thing is that while he was put into a care facility, she continued to care for him through her regular visits. Hearing you struggle with whether it was the right thing to do as to placing your grandmother into care rather than looking after her at home, let me share something I experienced just Sunday a week ago (Feb 26th). After preaching at our sending church, I sat down for a coffee at a table with a number of people for fellowship. One of these was this man's wife who introduced me to a lady who had become a regular visitor to the church services. When I asked this new lady about how long she had been coming, she told me she had been worshipping there, off and on for about a year. When I asked how that came about, she shared that she was a carer of the man who had just died and through contact with his wife and family had been led to start attending services. Be assured, by placing your grandmother in a facility where she will be properly cared for and where your own wellbeing will be enhanced, your duty of care before the Lord is more than met. Also understand, that the ongoing witness of family visiting a relative placed into care can used of the Lord to lead others to Him.
I pray that your personal mental, physical and spiritual health remains strong and you now are receiving the help you need to care for your grandmother.
Thanks again for reaching out and please accept my apologies in not responding sooner to your comment.
      Blessings in Christ
      Pastor Geoff van Schie
