    Sam Homles is one sharp young man. BTW the decal in the starboard window looks like a Blue Star Banner, signifying a son(or daughter) in the military!

    I bought a 20’ trailerable cruising sailboat in the ‘80’s then moved up to a 34’ sailboat. Eventually I got rid of that and bought a 16’ dinghy that I still have but I loved each boat. This project is really doable, make friends with local chandleries and boat associations. The products and resources are much more readily available today and some are better than years ago. Now I’ll settle in to binge watch your videos.

    I applaud and understand your venture. I too have been working on restoration of 1975 Chrysler Buccaneer 18 since May of this year. I look to complete her by May 2023. Have patience. It will seem like sometimes it's never going to get there. But it will. The reward is worth the effort. Enjoy the process. You are restoring a classic. When you finish you will know every inch of her and your sailing will be that much more enjoyable!!! I've refitted and painted several sailboats. Message me if you get stuck on something.
    Smooth sailing, Kevin Johnson

      Thank you for the kind and motivating words! I'm looking forward to the day she's on the water... I've already had a couple of moments where I think about every little project that needs to be completed and it feels like they'll never get done... but as long as I'm making a little progress here and there, I feel better about finishing one day. Good luck on your project and I'll let you know if I need some help!

    I went from one like this to 29’ and then 38’ and then 46’. I’ve sailed in so many parts of the world, but I’m back to 19’ and the sheer joy of local sailing. This is all the boat you will ever need. Respect and love her, she will teach you much and keep you safe. She’s a real boat.

      Sounds like a great journey. I’ll definitely give her the respect and love she deserves! I’d like to hold on to the Mariner ‘19 when the day comes that I look for something bigger… thanks for commenting, John.

    Great 1st sailboat, great always sailboat. You can bring this boat to places of beauty a "Blue water" sailboat will never be able to go .

    I just bought one of these last summer and it needs a lot of work as well. It had a lot of modifications done to it, like the access to the interior had a door put in that rotted away over the years along with all the wooden trim pieces

    My first boat was a yellow 1976 19ft O Day, great learning boat. My wife’s loved the cockpit because she could stretch out fully while sailing. Unfortunately as the kids got bigger and we had purchased a cottage in northern Ontario I ended up selling the boat so as to buy a sea doo for the kids. Later we bought a 1974 28ft Northstar, well I’m retiring from the RCN soon and have started refurbishing her. This I’m watching and learning from you. Thanks🇨🇦

    This is awesome! She's 10 years younger than TR, can't wait to see more of the finer details in the differences! Interesting the deck beams are foam. Have you happened to investigate further on that? Looking forward to seeing more! ⛵🤙 Oh, I too watch Sam Holmes, he's so chill doing crazy ass crap! haha Sailing Zingaro inspired me to do SVTR. 😎

    • @projectseahorsesailing
      @projectseahorsesailing  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks Brandon! I do wish it had the arched mast support instead of the compression post- it takes up valuable space in the cabin, but that's ok. I haven't looked into the deck beam yet. I need to check that deck out in more detail and see if there is an obvious reason it is separating. I'll likely just clean up the area, "stop drill" the crack, fill it with epoxy/filler, and then layup some fiberglass cloth over it (while compressing the beam back against the deck until cured). I'll do some research on it first and see if anyone else has had issues and what approach they took- expect a video!
      Haha that's awesome you're familiar with him! His videos are great, as are Sailing Zingaro's. Funny you had similar inspiration.. I went down the rabbit hole of sailing channels on youtube 😂

  • @dboboc

    The foam is just to give the fiberglass deck beams their shape, the fiberglass is what gives the beams their strength.

    Hi, a small boat will let you learn all the basic skill ( ie; fiber glassing ) without spending years of works an ton of money to do so.
    A boat sitting in your driveway does not cost you any storage fee, is always next to your place allowing short project without losing travel time.
    A small boat is also great to learn sailing; you get a more direct connection to the wind and wave, for better and for worst.
    I do think that you shall get formal basic sailing lesson prior to getting out on the ocean, even if coastal on nice day. There is no need for long ‘blue water’ training, but learning the basic on a boat ( not only on UA-cam and books ) is a great idea, especially in salt water.
    It does look like to get a lot of parts together with the boat. You will appreciates then since parts can be expensive for boat.
    My first advice, get the boat watertight first. Even if it is mainly made of fiberglass, there are still some plywood hidden behind some of it ( for stiffness ). A dry boat IS a healthy boat.
    Keep posting
    André

    • @projectseahorsesailing
      @projectseahorsesailing  2 роки тому

      I think you are right about recommending to take a sailing course. The previous owner did give me the books required for an ASA certified sailing course, and I think it would be wise for me to go ahead and pursue that.
      There is some plywood in the transom that will need to be replaced- I will do a video on that at some point. Looks like I'll be able to cut out the rotted part and scarf in a new piece.
      I'm glad I chose a small boat to learn on for many of the reasons you stated.
      Thanks for commenting!

    Do you know the story for the boat name? Noticed some Finnish language :D ... merilintu means "sea bird"

    • @projectseahorsesailing
      @projectseahorsesailing  2 роки тому

      Ah so it's Finnish! I didn't know that. The previous owner passed away a few years ago. His nephew had the boat in his driveway for the last two years... He told me his uncle was in the military (I believe Marine) and named the boat. That's all I know. There is a faded blue seabird on either side of the hull (hard to see) and a large blue seabird on the main sail!
