It was an inspired decision and for the better. It did have the side effect of putting Junior in game character limbo though, the simplest answer is that as OG Donkey Kong aged into Cranky, Junior aged into the DK we all know and love today. Diddy is just too unique and too perfect of a co star for DK to have not been allowed to see the light of day.

The modern DK is said to be Cranky’s grandson in multiple games, making him DK the third. Jr would be the current DK’s dad
