Oct 1970 31 players and staff of the Wichita State University Football team, Wichita, Ks
My dad was on the Bowling Green team that played Cal Poly in 1960. The played in the Mercy Bowl, a charity game for the families of those who perished. They were the first MAC team to play in a bowl though for such unfortunate circumstances.
My dad had just graduated from Cal Poly - we were in Cleveland and went to the game. The next morning, he went back down to help the police identify bodies of the players that he knew. I remember asking my mom about a friend I used to play with - their dad died in the crash. Very sad
@@carlmarch603, my dad is 82 and has always wanted to visit Cal Poly. He would definately talk your ear off about the game snd the Mercy Bowl.
@@gregwasserman2635 I was only in 2nd grade at the time, but I remember that Cal Poly lost. My dad passed away from cancer in ‘83. He was older than most students as he had a degree from San Jose State, served as Chief Engineer aboard a tanker during Korea and then after teaching HS shop for a year, decided to get his EE degree on the GI Bill. My mom taught school in SLO. We lived in the little town of Shell Beach where we could watch the rockets and missiles when they were launched from Vandenberg. Truly a different era - in Kindergarten, we took a train to see Hearst Castle - don’t think kids get field trips like that nowadays!
I never realized how many teams were killed in plane crashes. I knew the obvious but I learned a lot from this upload. Thank you. 🙏❤️🕊️
I agree 💯 percent
Someone probably already mentioned it, but you left out the Oklahoma State University plane crash on January 27, 2001. It killed 2 players, many of the coaching staff, and 6 OSU sportscasters.
@deeannefritz8424 yes. And Kurt Budke (women's BB coach) was killed in a plane crash. And the wichita state football team crashed a month before the Marshall crash.
I watched We Are Marshall. It really broke my ❤. The crash happened 10 years b4 I was born.
RIP all who died
I was friends with Alexander Vasyunov on my old Facebook account. We would chat every once in a while. Before he would sign offline, he would say, "I'm sorry but I have to leave you now." Unfortunately, on September 7, 2011, he was killed in the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl plane crash. To this day, those words still haunt me. 😢
I’m thankful that we get to learn of these amazing people and their tragic events because they deserve to be respected and never forgotten. This was beautifully written and researched ❤
Thank you Kay 😁....You just went to the top of my favorites list 👍....
Wow! I knew of a few of these crashes, but not all of them. Thank-you for posting.
I was 7 years old when the tragic crash claimed the Marshall University football team and I remember it well. One of my older brothers' girlfriends (later wife) was a student at MU and we lived about 35 minutes from Huntington in Saint Albans, WV. It was a terrible loss.
3:30, Laurie Owen killed at 16 years. The really horribe thing is Laurie's sister Maribel Owen, also a champion skater who was 20 years old was also killed on that flight. Their poor parents lost both of their children.
Actually....their mother also died in the crash
@@tvb1020 Coach Maribel Vinson Owen, who died with her daughters in the 1961 crash, had been a nine-time U.S. ladies singles champion, a 1936 Olympic bronze medalist, and the first female sportswriter for the New York Times. Owen also coached Frank Carroll, who went on to coach Michelle Kwan and Evan Lysacek.
You forgot about the Wichita State plane crash. I was living in Kansas at the time and remember the picture on the front page of the Wichita newspaper of a Wichita State football helmet in the wreckage.
You forgot about the Wichita State Football team that crashed in Colorado October 2nd in 1970 and Alan Kulwicki's crash April 1st 1993 outside Bristol Tennessee.
"I'm not sure; but I think there's a you tube video on that one ; the pilots were flying to low in dangerous mountains irresponsibly just to get a glimpse of the sights and caused the deaths of many"! Maybe, I don't remember that well'!
"Yes"! The Wichita State plane crash was unnecessary, the plane was in perfect condition, the weather was perfect that day. Nine football team members including the copilot survived that crash and made it down the mountain to get help, that crash may have been ruled man slaughter , a lot of children were orphaned that tragic day. This crash happened around one month before the Marshall plane crash.
Kulwicki was a Nascar driver it was Sad Him and Davey right close to each other but this about teams not Drivers
He did not say all killed. He just listed 18. There are probably many more.
Thank you for including the 1961 US World Figure Skating Team. Did you know that after that crash, US Figure Skating has a policy that the team travels individually to competitions? The only time the team has traveled together since the crash was the 2022 Beijing Olympics, and only because it was a charter flight due to covid.
Thanks for the info,🤔 that i did not know Erin...Have a great day
Chapacoense Brazil football (soccer) team 71/73 members died b/c of gross negligence of pilots & airline in allowing plane to run out of fuel.Absolutely tragic and sad.
October 2 1970 Wichita State Football Team lost in Plane Crash. ... their football program Never recovered. They ended their program in the 1980s. There the stadium sits empty to this day. ... You folks missed that one. Just thought you should know. Author Edward F Imhoff. Wichita Kansas.
There is a memorial to this plane crash just off the westbound lanes of I-70 in Colorado, just east of Eisenhower Tunnel at Loveland Pass.
Author lol 😂
The East-West Shrine game for Kansas high school players was held at the Wichita State football field. It was weird because the metal bleachers had been taken out. We sat on the concrete stands. At least Marshall University started up their football team again after they suffered the same fate
How in the world could you leave out the October 1970 Wichita State crash? 31 passengers were killed in the crash in the Colorado Rockies, including 14 starters and the head coach. The team missed two games then finished their schedule with reserves and freshmen who weren't normally eligible in 1970. Their first game after the crash was against Arkansas in Little Rock. This disaster is always overshadowed by the Marshall crash in November, a terrible disservice to the victims of the Wichita State crash. The Shocker program never fully recovered and was terminated after the 1985 season.
I live in Colorado & in October 2020 I was fortunate enough to climb up to the wreck site & tribute being held. It is amazing that there are still visible pieces of the wreckage after 50 years.
Hi David, yes, such tragedy, there seems to be a lot that have come to my attention thru the comments, so illl be sure to include them in a part 2 that we are now doing, just need to finish our researh ...the video should be ready for a may upload...thanks for the comment and thanks for watching and supporting our channel David.
You left out the Brazilian Soccer team that was almost completely wiped out in a plan crash in Columbia. Only 4 team members survived.
Yea chapecoense... so sad.
I remember the Iowa Cross-Country team. Here in the UK, it was mentioned on the radio news that a plane had crashed killing the whole of a cross-country team, including 2 British runners. Our first concern was that an athlete that my Dad had coached was at college in the States. Gradually we learned that the team was not from her college of Nebraska but from Iowa and that the British runners killed were Julie Rose and Sue Baxter. This was very sad as they were 2 girls also from Southern England whom had run many times against the athlete Dad had coached and other girls local to us. Julie Rose came from Ashford in Kent and there were no all-weather tracks on that area so a campaign was started to raise money for a track. The Julie Rose Stadium that opened in the 1990s is one of the best tracks in southern England.
I remember it well. I was at ISU when it happened. They played Break My Stride at the funeral; I always think of them when i hear that song. 😢 They were great that year, so sad, and such a terrible loss.
My dads uncle was the coach of the team, he was only 6 years old when Ron (the coach) died, he always says even though he was young he still remembers how Ron would always crack jokes and always be funny and have a good time
This was good. But the airplane sound in btwn each was a bit annoying.
RIP: Tony Bettenhausen, Jr.. February 14, 2000
In 1968 the Lamar College track team was killed in a plane crash as they were coming home. At about 50 feet above the runway and just seconds from landing, the pilot suffered a heart attack and collapsed over the control wheel in a QueenAire.
Lamar was the Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas.
Nice work on the video. However not once did you mention the crash that took the lives of almost the entire Wichita State University Football team on October 2, 1970.
Just the starters. There were 2 planes.
A good friend of mine is the youngest sister of one of the Evansville Aces players killed in the plane crash. She’s a great girl and I’m glad she was too young to remember much about the incident, but her mother and older sisters do. I’ve done a little research about the crash and have visited the memorial (the “Weeping Basketball”) on the U of E campus. There’s a very good documentary about the team and the crash called, “From The Ashes”. Without having experienced it myself, it’s hard for me to fathom the impact of such a tragedy. I just wish her and her family lasting peace. Love you, Leigh.
Did you just skip over October 2, 1970, Wichita State plane crash that killed 31 en route to play Utah State.
That is exactly what I was thinking
You miss the 1970 Puerto Rico volleyball team they crashed in a DC-9
The Cal Poly SLO crash was the one which made John Madden afraid to fly. Several of his friends perished in the tragedy.
Which makes it a miracle that Madden coached all those years in Oakland. I'm guessing he had to fly in some of those road games unless he took a bus to every road game as the coach. When he started broadcasting games it was the launching of the Madden Cruiser days.
@@victorkreitner754 He flew with the team, then he took Amtrak which he found out was unreliable and borrowed Dolly Parton’s tour bus and said “we have to get something like this” and that was how the Maddencruiser was born.
Hes on record saying that his fear predated the crash and was from claustrophobia
Wrong.. he stated many times it wasn’t fear of flying but claustrophobia
I'd like to mention Alan Kulwiki was the NASCAR champion the year before his private plane crashed on approach to the Tri-city airport in Blountville Tennessee. He was in route to a race at Bristol international speedway in 1993.
Defending his 1992 food city 500 victory, I posted about this also before I read yours. Lol
All this young lives lost ina split second RIP ❤🙏🏼
As mentioned, part of the Wichita State team was killed. The photo of Laurence Owen on the cover of SI days before the crash led to the ‘SI Jinx’. Although not the team per se, but on 10 January 1980; LSU Head Football Coach Bo Rein was returning to Baton Rouge, LA after a speaking engagement in Shreveport. After redirecting due to heavy rain, the plane continued East instead of Southeast (likely due to hypoxia) & was lost over The Atlantic. 25 October 199, the Learjet carrying PGA golfer Payne Stewart, his agent Robert Fraily (who happened to be a former QB @ my University) & four others died due to hypoxia.
Also in the 1970’s (I believe) famed F1 driver Graham Hill & others were killed when their private plane crashed in England during bad weather
Little did we know fate would have it that you would set a world record for "little did they know"s . . . it sent a shockwave through me
That was getting to me, too.
My friends parents were lost in the US Figure Skating crash
Who were they? The ice-dancing Dineens?
@lesliegmn3927 1960 crash. US team returning from Nationals.
@@franktrovato2311 There was more than one? The 1961 crash was en route to Worlds.
In 1970 the Puerto Rico women national Volleyball team was wiped out in a plane crash. This was not a particular team, but the best players of the country. The accident had a huge impact in the development of volleyball in the island and took almost 20 years for Puerto Rico to recover competitively.
Hi Lewest, wow what a tragedy R.I.P...I didnt know that, thanks for commenenting, ill do some research and may find a place for it in a future video. Have a great day Lewest.
Let us not forget Payne Stewart who died in a plane crash. In that case, it appears tnat the cabin depressurized killing all aboard, ultimately ending with the plane crashing.
One that was omitted occurred a little bit more than a month before the Marshall tragedy was the Wichita State University football team plane crash in Colorado. Thirty-one were killed, including players, staff and airplane crew.
You forgot to mention that the Torino squad also had 9 starters on the Italian national team. Its impact was greatly felt or Italy would have easily won the 1950 World Cup.
Its Iowa STATE, not Iowa. Iowa STATE Cyclones. IOWA HAWKEYES.
Wichita State University plane clash in Colorado
14:41 also killed in that plane crash in Farnbrough in 2008 was former British Touring Car Driver David Leslie
I add Chapecoense 11/28/2016
That tooo
There was a British Rugby team that was wiped out on THY 981 that took 346 lives outside of Paris, France
You forgot the Puerto Rican women's volleyball team that were killed when their plane crashed into the Caribbean on Sea on Feb. 15, 1970 returning from a game in the Dominican Republic .15 members of the team were onboard.
Wow, artificial intelligence really does suck - tragically. "In 2024, tragedy struck human discourse when AI interpreted absolutely everything the same unimaginably tragic way over and over again, claiming the life of English-language communication, and tragically ending in tragedy, sending shockwaves through the history of poor writing. Little did we know that human interaction would, tragically, never be the same again."
The Marshall airplane didn't crash into the side of a mountain. It came in too low and hit the tops of trees.
At the time of the crash in the Slesse Mountains in December of 1956 it was tragically the largest Canadian Airline disaster at the time.
Alianza Lima incident not only hurt the club team but also their national team, all players were the future generation for the 1990 world cup qualifiers along with their coach
You left out the Wichita St football team whose plane crashed 5 weeks before the Marshall crash.
What about the 1970 Wichita State football team?
Many of Man U's player's were Irish International's, it severely affected the national team.
Two scouts for the LA Kings died on 9/11 on Flight 175. Not sure that counts, but they were flying on behalf of the team. Also, among the hockey players killed in Russia, Ruslan Salei is worth mentioning. He scored an overtime goal for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in the 2003 Stanley Cup Finals.
Also, Chapecoense futbol team. November, 2016. And Wichita St which others have mentioned
6 weeks before the Marshall University Plane Crash, 1 of 2 planes carrying the Wichita State Football Team to a game against Utah State crashed into a mountain range in Colorado, killing 29 of the 37 passengers on board the plane, and the 3 person crew. 2 more passengers passed away later while being treated from their injuries
Six Rapid City High School cheerleaders died in a plane crash on March 17, 1968, at Rapid City Regional Airport as they returned from leading Cobbler fans at the state championships in Sioux Falls. Jan Glaze, Shirley Landstrom, Laureen “Kay” McNutt, Terry Blanton, Diana McCluskey, and Gail Flohr died, along with pilot Ivan Landstrom, his wife, Mary (Shirley’s parents), and English teacher and cheer adviser Dorothy Lloyd.
Some other things with the 1980 US Boxing Team crash. It was on a regularly scheduled LOT (Polish Airlines) flight, on a Soviet made plane. One member of the team, Bobby Czyz, in part of Polish heritage, wasn't on the flight due to an injury. He would later be a pro fighter and an announcer of fights. I also knew one of the non-team victims, an young man who I worked with a few years earlier. He was from my hometown in northern NJ, His parents were also killed on the flight. The family was of the Jewish faith.
2001 Oklahoma State Men’s basketball team. Crashed in Colorado killing 10
Ummm...wichita state football crash?
I'm amazed that you forgot the crash of the Wichita State University airplane crash that took the lives of 31 - the entire varsity football team on October 1970.
Missing; Wichita State FB - 1970. OK State M 16:51 BB - 2001. OK State WBB - 2011. Payne Stewart PGA - 1999. Bo Rein LSU FB Coach - 1980.
While flying is a safe way to travel, it probably the most worried about because everyone at least considers the probability of a crashing in a vehicle that they have 😊no idea how to operate.
There are two plane crashes that you missed. One the Wichita University Football team, This plane crash basically met the end of the football program at WSU. The Wheat Shockers were never the same. Two the Oklahoma State University Cowboys men's basketball team returning back to Stillwater, after a game in Boulder, Colorado. The team was on two different school planes when one of them crashed. The other plane arrived back in Stillwater safely. This was in the 1990's. The Wichita plane crash was in 1970.
Idk if you knew but also in 1970 Oct, 2nd the Wichita state football team had a plane crash aswell there was 31 deaths one of my assistant principals survived the crash. They too hit a mountain side
You missed the 2011 Oklahoma State basketball team
Evansville aces basketball team 77 that was absolutely horrible
Knute Rockne, Notre Dame football coach plane crash killing him
The Hill F1 team could be added to the list.
Wichita State football team? Early '70s
1992 Nascar champion Alan Kulwicki died in a plane crash , going to Bristol Tennessee to defend his Winston cup championship and win his 2nd food city 500 in a row, he was owner and driver.
What about Payne Stewart?
When I leave this world I hope nobody says “little did he know”😮
Forgot to mention the October 2, 1970 crash of a plane carrying 14 members of the Wichita State University football team which also killed the team's coach Ben Wilson and his wife, Helen. The plane was enroute to play a football game at Utah State University.
I remember very well a football team died in a plane crash in 1978 but dont know the name of the team though.their uniforms were red and white.
What about davey Allison died flying his helicopter think it was at talladega speedway may god be with him
Why there are no mention 1970 Wichita state football plane crash that killed 29 players and that program never recover from that eventually football program got disbanded by 1986.
Dniprodzerzhinsk* Its first half is named after the Dnipro (Dnieper) River, which flows through Ukraine’s capital of Kyiv (Kiev) and empties into the Black Sea.
One other... For some soccer team in this video, you listed a misspelling of the name and mispronounced it. It's not Dinamo, but Dynamo. Dynamo is a ubiquitous name in international soccer/football.
I didn't realise Farnborough was in London? I thought it was in Hampshire?
Good video, but isn't the 1985 crash Iowa STATE'S cross country team, not Iowa's? Those are two different schools, and I can't imagine the University of Iowa trying to fly back home to AMES.
Your “little did they know” is bad taste for those lost
Wichita State ?
The 1970 Marshall Thundering Herd football team who lost their lives. Did watch the movie 🎥"We Are Marshall". Let me add also lost their lives are the 2025 US Figure Skating Team in DC.
🙏❤️
You left out both Oklahoma State plane crashes!!!
02:58: the crash of the Sabena Airlines flight devastated the United States' skating community. Skaters, coaches, and judges were lost. Essentially, an entire generation of skating continuity and knowledge was wiped out. The cause of the crash has never been determined.
1960s sucked for flying
Wasn't their an Italian soccer team back in early- mid 50's that was coming home after a championship and their plane crashed?
Surprised you didn’t include either of the Oklahoma State basketball team crashes
Ill be sure to have them in Part 2 DrumsCorpGuide. Wont be out for a few months, so if you have any you would like me to look into please let me know...And have a Great Saturday...👍
You forgot about Wichita state university in Wichita Kamas who lost they're entire football team in a plane crash in October 1970.
What about the chapacoense team that died in 2016?
In the mid-air collision over Dneprodzerzhinsk, the 2 planes (both Tupolev Tu-134s, one Tu-134A, one Tu-134AK) collided twice, just saying, that is the only time that ever happened as far as i know
Yes you left off The 1970 Wichita State football team and the 2001 Oklahoma State basketball team
Not to nitpick, but Iowa and Iowa State are different schools... :/
"Little did they know.......fate had other plans....." ad nauseum.
You missed the Wichita State crash. Shame.
Airplanes are safe. People don't die on airplanes.
I thought there was a crash in Colorado, in the mountains west of Denver that involved a team!
"Little did they know." The editing needed a bit to be desired, but informative and also sad.
You forgot Chilean soccer team green cross.
Did you forget the “chapecoense” Brazilian soccer team crash , November 28 , 2016 ?
Marvis Frazier was scheduled to be on the flight in 1980 but his dad Joe said your not going and he wasn’t allowed to fly.
