Because of its separation from Virginia, West Virginia is perhaps the only state to lose its state university in an instant. With no time to lose, the newly minted state made us of already existing laws to create the nation’s newest state university and put it on a path of progressive growth. In the century and a half since its founding, West Virginia University has risen to become the college the state’s founders envisioned; the Mountain State’s flagship school looking over the state from its perch in the Morgantown hills.
