    First of all, WV is in the Southeast. No state is officially considered part of more than one region of the U.S., much less several. Second, the Mid-Atlantic is a sub-region of the Northeast, not its own region. Also, the Mid-Atlantic is comprised of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York, NOT the Virginias, Maryland, and Delware. That's even besides the fact that West Virginia is not near the Atlantic Ocean, as its nearest point is well over an hour drive away via interstate.

    • @derekmoore7619
      @derekmoore7619 23 дні тому

      Wow, you are married to some old ideas. There are maps all over the place that put WV in either the Northeast or the Southeast. And West Virginia is commonly referred to as a Mid-Atlantic state because it's the buffer between the Midwest and the Atlantic. I think the point of the video is the overlapping culture and economics, not a strict definition from only the sources you trust but a definition that actually varies from source to source. Here's just one source that includes that includes, WV, VA, MD, DE and Washington in the Mid-Atlantic. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mid-Atlantic_(United_States)

    • @YouTubePremiumforRealz
      @YouTubePremiumforRealz 22 дні тому

      @@derekmoore7619 The U.S. Census Bureau lists the Mid-Atlantic states as consisting of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. www2.census.gov/geo/pdfs/maps-data/maps/reference/us_regdiv.pdf Even Wikipedia recognizes that Mid-Atlantic derives from the Middle Colonies, which consisted of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. The Wikipedia article also denotes that the inclusion of Virginia and West Virginia as "Mid-Atlantic" are "atypical" due to the cultural differences. Nowhere in the Wikipedia article does it claim that any state, much less WV, is included due to being a "buffer zone" between the Atlantic and the Mid-West. Some agencies, like the USGS and GSA, include other states as "Mid-Atlantic," but that is due to the appropriation of government funding to certain areas and other strategic needs, rather than cultural or strictly geographic regions. In other words, WV is only included as "Mid-Atlantic" by some agencies due to it being more convenient for those agencies to operate. The U.S. Census Bureau is unique in the fact that it tries to focus on culturally linked geographic regions so that the census data can more accurately represent the actual regions, especially when comparing data from different censuses.

      @@UA-camPremiumforRealz I'm not sure why you've taken this subject quite so personally, but you are clearly missing the spirit of the piece. The nation does not culturally divide right down the lines according to state boundaries. The cultures seep into each other and West Virginia is influenced by all the regions that this video mentions. Also, the Census Bureau is not some official entity that decides what the regions are. Their designations are only intended to convey THEIR methodology, and are not a command to the rest of us that we must follow as a guideline. I'm well aware of the Middle Colonies but even that didn't make sense because the others were New England and Southern, so they lacked Northern to give them a middle. Moreover, those were very loose definitions back in the day because mapmaking was hugely flawed. New York, New Jersey & Pennsylvania can't be the Northeast AND the Mid-Atlantic at the same time. It's a contradiction and businesses have chiefly stopped including them in both regions when Northern or Northeast serves them better. And at no point was I using the Wikipedia article to back me up on the "buffer" for the Midwest remark. I am stating that based on how these states are discussed in documentaries and forms. Nonetheless, if you want to use the colonial defintions, you need to recall that West Virginia was part of Virginia until the Civil War, so your point about the distance to the ocean is rendered moot by whatever metric you choose. West Virginia is included in the Mid-Atlantic by the Federal Reserve Bank, Courts of Appeals, Office of Management & Budget, and many other entities of equal merit to the Census Bureau. West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and D.C. have far more in common with each other than they do with the rest of the South or the Northeast. Again, the spirit of this piece is that West Virginia shares cultural regions and evidently wasn't meant to be taken as the final word.

He would tell us stories about watching the Tornado rip thru Shinnston from his back porch!! That it was a mile wide and was so powerful it sucked the West Fork River dry!! That's some crazy powerful stuff!! I have an actual photo from june 1944 of Shinnston Pleasant Hill area the day after. Total destruction!! From what I understand if this twister would have hit a more populated area. Like Clarksburg or Fairmont, that it would have been an F5 100% !! And from what I have seen and heard. I believe it!!

    My mom passed away 2 weeks ago but every year she would visit hbhd. I always seen her post pictures when she went. At her funeral last week my brother said the night before she passed she came to this place and he was defeated because she wanted to sign her name but it was too hot so she didn't. When he told me that I jumped on my motorcycle and rode from Ohio to WV to get her name signed and see what was so special about this hot dog stand. I was amazed how much this place reminded me of her and knew why she loved it so much. I rode for 16 total hours to visit and sign her name last Monday and I don't think anything in this world could remind me so much of her it was amazing the food staff art and atmosphere was 100% her. Thank you! not only is the food amazing but you guys were a blessing to me and my brother. Thank you I'm so glad you thought of this I'm forever grateful and cant wait to visit again. I may have signed her name more than a few times cuz that's what she wanted but it made me feel good to be able to fulfill her final wish and enjoy the amazing food much love from Ohio you guys are a 10/10 food art service and atmosphere I love it wish I could've experienced it with her but it made me happy to enjoy what she enjoyed so much. If you see vicky ramsey signed multiple times I apologize but I had to for her I can't thank this woman enough!

    Much of this is based on my research into the Underground Rail Road in West Virginia. One note: the illustration shown for the Salem-Harrisville Turnpike is in error. From Salem, the turnpike entered southern Doddridge County. The turnpike then passed directly by the brick home of Jepthah FitzRandolph and on to Ritchie County, by way of Oxford to Pullman. The road between Pullman and Harrisville is today known by Harrisville residents as the Pullman Road. The turnpike certainly did not pass through West Union because the old Northwestern Virginia Turnpike already existed for travelers from Salem to West Union.and points west.

    • @daily304
      @daily304 3 місяці тому

      Thank you for letting us know. The access to the maps of the old turnpikes can be rather limited and the source we had indicated this path.

    • @stephenkelley2700
      @stephenkelley2700 3 місяці тому

      I have been doing some research on the route of the turnpike recently. Do you know the route after it starts in Salem and goes up current Patterson Rd. to Greenbrier Rd? Does it go up current Hunters Fork and across the hill to Red Lick and then onto Meathouse Fork or did it go from Greenbrier Rd. to Black Lick then onto Sugar Camp then on to current State Rt 18? Both options would put Jeptah's house along the road.

    • @sandramoore
      @sandramoore 3 місяці тому

      @@stephenkelley2700 I wish I knew the answer to that. I suspect the option you described that included Meathouse Fork is the turnpike route. (Someone may once have mentioned it was a part of the turnpike). Maybe Doddridge County historians can help with that. I basically know some of the points along the way. New Milton is one example. It lies about eight miles south of West Union. Looking at modern maps, from New Milton the turnpike must have gone south. Maps indicate few east west options. I live in Ritchie County, so looked at where the turnpike must have been. Oxford is near the county line between Doddridge and Ritchie counties. My ancestor Alexander Lowther had the original post office at Oxford, when he lived on the Ritchie County side of the line. In the book by McWhorter about Border Settlers of Northwestern Virginia, Alexander Lowther's comment before dying said something about hoping for salvation based in part on his hospitality to travelers. I was puzzled because today that area is like the middle of nowhere, remote. Looking at modern maps, the road from Oxford crosses the County line, then south for a distance, then West into Pullman and northward to Harrisville over the "Pullman road." People living in Doddridge County who have deep roots in those areas you mentioned: Patterson Rd., Greenbrier Rd., Hunters Fork, Redlick and Meathouse Fork, may have family oral history about the turnpike. I wonder if attorneys doing title searches in Doddridge County have found properties that mention the Salem-Harrisville Turnpike? A Harrisville attorney told me that the Pullman road was the old turnpike. I might also recommend looking at the History of the Seven Day Baptist Churches of West Virginia, written by Corliss FitzRandolph, a grandson of Jepthah. I have Seven Day Baptist ancestors myself (Davis, Maxson, Tharp and FitzRandolph). I know that early on the pioneer settlers sent out the finest hunters to harvest game and smoke the meat to preserve it for transport to places like Salem. Thus the name of Meathouse Fork? Also, the Seven Day Baptist churches were often visited by ministers from New York State, including Rev. Stillman Coon and Rev. Alexander Campbell (of the SD Baptist faith and not the man of the same name, Rev. Alexander Campbell, a founder of the Disciples of Christ). Those ministers were abolitionists and so were most of the West Virginia SD Baptists. Jepthah served as clerk of the SD Baptist conference that met in Berea, Ritchie County, in 1854. He may be the one who drafted the following resolution, which was adopted: "That we regard American slavery as a sin of great magnitude in the sight of God, and a flagrant violation of the rights of our fellow men and that it is our duty to use all of our influence against it."

    • @stephenkelley2700
      @stephenkelley2700 3 місяці тому

      @@sandramoore Thank you for your response. I live in Salem and grew up on Patterson Rd. I am helping the current owner of William Fritz Randolph's home Greenbrier Rd put the house on the historic register. Wiliam was Jepthah's older brother. He built his house in 1850. He was also a supervisor for the construction of the turnpike. I reviewed his personal papers that his family donated to the WVU Library. It confirms the route along Greenbrier Rd but I couldn't tell much after that. The WV DOT has an online map of the old turnpikes but it only shows the section from Salem along Patterson Rd. to the top of Salem Hill at the Doddridge County line. It then picks it up from Rt. 18 along the Porto Rico Rd to Oxford. I have also found some maps 1873 that shows roads on the two options I described before. I have been told there are stories of slaves being transported along Meathouse Fork in chains. From the online map, Meathouse Fork was part of the Weston-West Union Turnpike. My theory that William's house may have been a stop on the Underground Railroad also since he was also a Seventh Day Baptist and his house sits right on the turnpike. I didn't find anything in his papers to confirm that though.

    • @sandramoore
      @sandramoore 3 місяці тому

      @@stephenkelley2700 A couple of years ago, I was called upon by a writer for Wild Wonderful West Virginia magazine to help her assess the likelihood that Jepthah FitzRandolph's house had been part of the Underground Railroad. I referred to the research by Dr. Judith Wellman of New York State, who invented the Wellman Scale to evaluate evidence of involvement with the UGRR. I said that Jepthah's house would have to rank at Level 3, due to several pieces of evidence beyond the oral history: four separate chambers in the basement (each only accessible from one of four hidden trapdoors), membership in the SD Baptist Church where abolitionist pastors preached against slavery, and attendance at the SD Baptist Churches of West Virginia 1854 conference held at the SDB Church at Berea, in Ritchie County, where they adopted an antislavery resolution. (Jepthah was the clerk of that conference held in 1854).

    I have a Marx train set from the late 40's to early 50's era, it belonged to my father. Set it up around the Christmas tree, never fails to run...even the lights work!!

    Made the trip from Hazard, Kentucky. Good hotdogs and atmosphere. Hope to get back there someday.
