Bill Hader on Writing the "South Park" Kanye Fish-Sticks Joke | The New Yorker Festival - Комедії
The image of Trey pausing and asking if anyone has ever made that joke. True artist.
Well... every English speaker made that connection when we first heard that Yanks don't call them fish fingers.
You know he asked it within a millisecond
I’ve thought of that image many a times!
Frantic born and raised in Texas. They’re called fish sticks
Amy Schumer would never...
This joke became a legacy boys locker room joke that will be past down through generations of middle schoolers
passed
True. I remember in 6th grade in the locker room kids would do that joke. Didn't know South Park actually started it. Genius show
passed*
You say that like it's a bad thing
@@NemorisInferioris 3rd grade for me when the show started. these kids should be my age now
The fact that Hader credits Cartman with the joke is the best part.
Probably the most profound comment made on here.
Lol poor Jimmy.
He... Didn't?
@@dooeytee6715 not finding it for but yeah definitely says “Cartman writes a joke” or something substantially similar. It may hve been on purpose, but I think he simply remembers the part of the episode he had a more significant part in originating better than the side joke about Cartman stealing credit.
ps that’s my favorite part of the whole episode; any number of comics, even those accused of stealing jokes, could have worked in the interrogation but having Mencia compared to Cartman was perfect.
@@rtmordecai1 Yes, that's the part, but I don't think he thought about it that hard and decided to say Cartman's name on purpose lol.
Are we going to talk about how 5 years after the episode came out Bill Hader is on a talk show doing exactly what Cartman and Jimmy do on Ellen, where they talk about how they came up with the fish sticks joke?
That’s the first thing I thought about
Life imitates art.
@@Melospizia westworld theme intensifies.
Wish I could show you this screenshot where you got 666 likes. It’s so beautiful
South Park new simpsons
To this day, Kanye doesn't get it.
Yeah he does, he jokes not about getting it
Does he like South Park?
Jón Bjarni Snorrason r/woooosh
No. He likes fish sticks.
He doesn't get anything.
I never knew he was the one behind this joke. I didn't even know he was writing for them yet.
You didn’t know he was the one who wrote the joke? Life imitating art.... ;)
I thought it was Carlos Mencia
@DA BOUL BLACKLUNGZ Yeah I think everyone knows that he's a writer for them nowadays especially if they've seen Six Days to Air. I just didn't know when he came on board exactly.
He does some voicing too
I had no idea either but just watching him talk I can see him fitting in with trey and matt like a new brother lol
How good of a comedian you have to be to make people laugh that hard while telling a story about a joke that everyone has already seen. Bill Hader is brilliant! :D
Usually pretty good, some people just get automatic laughs. Armisen has this gift to the point of it being a curse when he’s serious.
Maybe 1/8th of that New Yorker fest audience has seen that episode
Except if it's your typical _New Yorker_ reader they probably haven't seen it before 😬
Side, they weren't falling out of their chairs
The art of storytelling.
The joke that broke Kanye's brain for good.
lmfao
naw, that was biden telling him how to vote lol
UPDF Drakkell Can’t even say a joke without Americans turning it political
@@420blazeitt5 but he did try to tell him how to vote and it made the funniest thing happen... Kanye ran fro the prez seat for a week! tell me that aint the best joke
UPDF Drakkell republican?
"so it's the idea that Cartman came up with the joke.."
Jimmy: Am i a j-... a jo-... Am i a joke to you?
Just let him have it.
Just give him half.
A j... A joOOOOooOo... AjoooooooooOooooo...
Knock knock....
"Am I a jah. Juuuuh. Joooooooh. Am I a jaaaaaaaaah. Jo. Am I a joke to you?"
Lol
Hanging out with the lads one time discussing this episode in front of a mate who doesn't watch South park- not only did he not get the joke but proceeded to go through many of kanye's response lines verbatim.
Had the rest of us in stitches
pro-tip: He loved the episode so much he memorized kanye's lines and has been waiting years to to play dumb for the bit. sounds like a nice friend.
@@trollshamanpwnage yeah you wish 😆
to this day Cartman still gets credit for Jimmys joke
Just like Hader probably takes credit for Trey&Matt's joke.
Join mAh clan
He explains it all and then at the end just sits there like it's everyday stuff, ya know. Bill Hader cracks me up every time.
Interestingly, Trey tells the story that he came up with the Fishsticks jokes while Bill Hader sat on the couch eating Cheetos
Someone don't like south park?
Someone don’t get the reference?
No, I heard Carlos Mencia say that he came up with the joke on letterman
@@basednorsegael1089 no man. Allegedly...... Kayne west took a baseball bat to Carlo Mencias head. Since then Mencia said he stole the joke.
It was twizzlers, actually.
Kanye singing the song at the end is still one of my favourite south park moments ever. 😂
ive been so lonely girl ive been so sad and down, could undestand my head is... :D
is it weird my favorite Kanye song, is a song he didnt write, or sing? lmao
It is one of the best SP songs ever after Taco Taco ofcorz
@@ryanakahuss it’s a parody of Heartless. not an original song
the autotune on it is just so perfect
He sounds disappointed and proud at the same time that he participated in creating this episode
His expression in those last few moments eh? heh
Hader in a nutshell...Hader Power! 🐢

Welcome to 2020 + 2021. The humor police are watching you! The New Yorker doesn't like to discuss any of its interviews before 2020.
@@i-never-look-at-replies-lol so did i and commented lol. had me in stitches.
The fact that they googled the joke not to step on toes kills me. Respect for the craft.
more like a legal obligation.
The simpsons did it
If you’re a comedian you have to do this
@@PeterSedesse 0 legal obligation lol. You can't copyright a joke. It's just a self respect/respect for others and the art of comedy
@@TryPuttingItInRice i wouldn't say its out of respect really although that might come into play as well. Trey and Matt pride themselves on not following formulas or trends so most likely if they had found other usage of the joke they would have just go "ok how do we make this ours" like how they did the Tom cruise thing, jokes about Tom's sexuality had been around for years so instead of just going tha route they had him literally trapped in a closet trying to convince him to "come out"
I'm blown away that his first day on the job, he helped write a joke this legendary
I like how Bill Harder, at the end of the video, was still marvelled at that episode. You can see the look on his face like "wow, I can't believe we pulled that one off!"
Bill *H A R D E R*
@@whyareweherejusttosuffer6886 ah yes. Brother of Bill Softer, haven’t you heard of him?
The idea of these guys working together is pure, unadulterated bliss
I had no idea Bill Hader worked on South Park. Love him even more now. Fish Sticks episode is a classic.
Check out the South Park documentary 6 Days To Air. Hader makes an appearance!
What really made this joke funny was Kanye's real life reaction to it. Otherwise I would have forgotten about it a long time ago. Great job picking someone with no sense of humor.
"because I wear skinny jeans!"
Literally the perfect mark.
Bill Hader is massively underrated and a super nice dude.
Great energy no doubt
Birdman?
'Barry' is legit amazing.
He is not remotely underrated. It's okay to like someone or something, you don't have to declare it underrated.
@@Shiyounin :( b...but i feel so much cooler and edgier if i declared everything i liked "underrated".
This man is the greatest thing to happen to comedy in the past 15 years. He’s a brilliantly gifted talent.
He's really great at impressions. I also think he deserves recognition for his contribution to "drama" or "crime drama" as well considering Barry was so fantastic. It's equal parts funny and thrilling, but it's showing I guess him trying to move into more serious fields with his career.
Love him as Mickey on Bob's burgers
@@voteZDLR lmao his conan impression is legendary 😂
Agreed, it seems increasingly hard to find naturally, organically funny comedians like this guy
Barry is a great show. He’s just talented all around
“We could go together if you want” YES
This guy didn’t write that joke, Carlos Mencia wrote it

Matt Bags what purge
@@jimmybags6598 What purge?
Thank god for that retreat! Gave me one of the greatest laughs ever!!! 😂😂❤️
1:00 people seem to forget that by this point, Trey Parker is 52. He is absolutely old enough to be your dad. The fact that he still seems like a weed smoking collage kid making a crass 90's animation show would probably be a life goal for most people of his generation.
Just an FYI he was only around 40 when this episode came out.
What’s even crazier is Trey swears that he’s never smoked weed in his life. Said it on Australian 60 minutes episode 5 years ago.
@@NickDiasOuttaMyLeague yeah I'm pretty sure I heard he came up for episode ideas by hotboxing so I don't know.
Every once in a while I watch this story just because it’s so joyful:)
I didn’t think that episode could be any funnier but I’m so glad I’ve watched this
The funny part is Kanye West actually didn't get the joke in real life😂
As intended.
Yeah he did. He was interviewed right after the episode aired and he said south park got him good.
What makes you think he didn’t?
@@mikemugs7 The Jews.
yeah he even included the fact south park made fun of him in one of his lines (i dont remember which song)
I thought the funniest part of the episode was that Cartman was convinced that he wrote the joke and Craig trying to convince Jimmy to just take half of the credit.
I love this episode. Thank you Bill.
They didn’t even need to make the episode, just describing it is gold
Hader is so dry in his delivery it's hilarious
I like to come back and watch this every few months. Always brings the laughs.

I didn't know they write together but I think its cool they do. South Park is one of the greatest shows ever.
This could not have aged better.
0:19 “Who’s this?!?!” this cracked me up *way* more than it should have 😂
You can tell it's a good joke because just telling it back casually the idea is still hilarious
Edit: Such as when someone badly hums a good tune, or writes a grammatically poor sentence that's nonetheless correct...
Bills face at the very end was awesome!
even bill hader said cartman came up with the joke instead of jimmy 😭
Lol such a funny little awkward moment at the beginning
Oh that was funny? I thought it was excruciating.
The only place I want to be in my life is sitting at the table for a writers room

I have literally been searching the comments for anyone that's come back to this joke recently. You're the only one I've seen so far. And oh my God yes, to everything you said😅
This joke has caused Kanye West to have several mental breakdowns.
I really hope that’s what caused his crazy 😂

Bill Hader did one of the voices and trey did the other

Rasheed Amir it was Gorgeous on MBDTF
It wasn't a freestyle. As Joe Jordan said, it was in Gorgeous- the second track on the album My Beatiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
@Mr. McGringus No rapper freestyles, they have pre made freestyles and then the improv the first and second line to rhyme and then use their premade diss raps. And if they do freestyle actually they rap at like 20 BPM so they can legit think about it and it's painful to watch.
@@whiskerbiscuit6674 Ah, I see you know your judo well.
@DéJi Vu Exactly. Guitarists do the same with guitar solos. The have memorized phrases and and the string them together to make it seem like a long solo that they came up with off the top of their heads. Same with Dancers in salsa and stuff. you learn sequences and then string them together regardless of the song, but because it's usually a similar beat it works.
The secret to impressing people is to practice a lot and then act like you didn't know what you were doing.
"...and then in the end Kanye sings underwater and...., " Hillarious!!
