She was more than a great actress; she was a great human being. The roles she took confronted us with the truth and demanded we be better persons. I was young when I saw the premiere showing of Miss Jane Pittman. When she walked up to the whites only water fountain with the policeman protecting it and takes a drink, I couldn't keep the tears back; I wept and it left and indelible mark in my soul. Another lesson she taught me by her roles was that having wisdom and class didn't mean having university degrees; the Bible tells us they are a gift from God. She had both, and in Miss Jane Pittman, now in her 100s, she told the reporter she talked to the old, majestic oak tree. Not the chinaberry. It made a deep sense. Cicely Tyson made it clear that life had to be seen with greater clarity - the changes we are obliged to work for and lives we have to live. Our lives have a purpose and God has expectations that we leave it having met those expectation.
