Dude you have to listen to the LA Eels concert that he did after this one, he got his voice back and sounded amazing and even hit the super high notes. This Minneapolis St. Paul Eels concert was the first live show he did after 20 + years and he was rusty. His voice is deeper and stronger but he sounds awesome. Also this Eels band has a double bass player and he tuned his voice to this Indie rock band.
Exactly this dude who does he think he is critiquing the voice Steve perry at 71years old and he hasient been in the singing business for twenty five years so this dude needs to just go away .... I could go on he's just making me mad
Funny how you react more positively to autotune pop music and are more forgiving to generics who can't even write a melody. But when a legend comes along (in his 70s) you have so much to say 😂 listen to yourself when you're "explaining" completely nasal, shaky and mickey mousey. No hate but learn from the old school guys who used their ear and technique to sing and leave Mr Perry alone. He's got nothing to prove to you, he outsold
I totally agree!!! Michael Jordan cannot dunk like he could, and Carl Lewis totally lets me down when I see him run compared to how he did winning the Gold in 84. Man, if we live our lives comparing our talents, bodies, and minds to who we are at our peak, life is going to suck for all of us.
It’s one thing to comment on his voice now that he’s older, but critiquing his voice when he was in his prime and saying he should adjust his vowel sounds??Really??! Do you even know who he is? Steve Perry (like some other great legendary singers) had his own diction and phrasing, mixed with his tone and timbre that made his singing voice unique. It’s what makes his voice “Steve Perry”. You are basically saying Steve Perry should not sing like Steve Perry. 🤦🏻♂️
It is not only the getting older part. He lost some of his voice quality in a short time. Like 1986 to 1991. That was when his mother died and he was on a breakdown, stopping with music completly. After that he did not sing for a long time, which explains his voice decline. But still: He is great now and was extremly good before. I can not blame him for losing his voice after family losses. But it is different and there is no way to deny that.

Is this supposed to be funny? Perry in his late 60's sounds much better than your attempts at the song. Does he sound the same in his 60's as he did in his 20's and 30's? No, but who does? Perry still sounds great!
Steve sang his heart out for years with the nasty journey and he's pushing 70 and hasn't sang in 14 years.....I will always love Steve Perry and his voice
He did sing so the fans could hear and share this extraordinary singers voice!!! I am a 70 year old singer. I have opened in the past for Bob Seger he told me I had a good voice. I was floored when he said it. I told him I thought he was great. I had a totally different voice ,mine not the same sound as his . I am writing and recording now days and believe me I don’t sound twenty anymore I still can hold my own but 20vs70 there is a difference. Steve God Bless You !!! My voice is getting stronger again and yours is going to get stronger and better with time!!! You truly are one of the best singers that young ones want to be like in their singing careers.!!! You could sing with the angels.
Good grief, what is this video? The man is one of the finest vocalists of any genre to ever grace the stage. He is now in his seventies and can still sing a lot of modern vocalists under the table.
Steve could sing the yellow pages and everybody would listen with joy. He hasn't lost anything. Rod Stewart , Mick Jagger , Bono ( who I've seen in concert many times) have all changed their delivery of songs. It's not a bad thing, even the great Robert Plant has aged and changed some vocal range on some songs. Big deal , these people are in their 60's and 70's now and still are the most amazing musicians ever. No musician of today's popularity could even hold a candle to these people. They made rock and roll not pop country. Steve Perry is the voice of his generation and we couldn't be happier that he is recording and enjoying music again. We will buy and attend any thing he wants to do because he is that good. Rock on Steve 🎶🎸🥁🎉
And all this in no way changes the fact that he had one of the best voices. That many still listen to regularly to this day (2023). Absolutely beautiful voice!!❤ 1978 - 80 are my favorite years.❤🔥🔥
When someone critiques a 30-year-old voice compared to a 70-year-old voice, certain factors go out the window OR the person that's critiquing is in way above their head... Steve Perry's younger voice is second to none... His 70-year-old voice doesn't matter because he's earned that ! You have a nice voice Adam, but when you're 70, it's going to be different !
I would never allow myself to judge the voice of a legend like that. after a long hiatus he still sings fabulously and a lot better than they sing. the difference is that he has soul in his voice and feels the songs. steve certainly doesn't have to hide. I don't want to know how your voice is at his age sounds
A good breakdown…….. in his earlier days I think it was stylistic choice on vowel chides etc. He is remarkable and I greatly admire him. He’s endured tragic loss and major illness and he’s come through. Bravo
When you go on the road for months at a time and sing at the range Steve Perry did for all of the years that he did, you would be dropping your jaw. which is correct technique by the way, in spots to help yourself get through all those nights just like he did.
I understand what you are trying to do but it's like comparing apples to oranges. Steve was young and he was in his Olympic voice, that he sung every night with for years, then stopped. Now he has not sang for years and he will soon be 71. People's voices change, especially when you do not sing all the time anymore. Die heart Perry fans know this. Steve could sing any song any way and it will still sound great to us. Yes, Steve once had the greatest voice out there. To his fans, to hear him sing again, is awesome. What will you sound like at 70?
This must be some type of repost because that video of Steve with The Eels was in 2015 and he did this on a whim after not singing, virtually at all, since about 1998! So it's very unfair to critique him in this situation. You should get a video from his 2019 album Traces if you want a true performance to critique.
What happened to Perry's voice?! Dude, you're comparing a performance from when he was in his 30's to a performance when he's in his early 70's! Give the guy a friggin' break! Even in his 70's he's STILL better than most of the younger vocalists today who need auto-tune to sound remotely in tune.
its journeys song legally speaking not steve's.... the fact is he left journey to die maybe he lost his voice or for his solo act only to know that his solo act was just a flop...
I watched this for about a minute. It's a guy who sings analyzing Steve Perry's voice 30 years later. Next, he will show how you may gain weight and lose your hair as you get old. Sorry - no bueno.
Let's be real...of course, the voice of Journey's lead vocalist in the 70s, Steve Perry, compared to his most recent performance (after 25 yrs or so) would be of big difference. His high-pitch tenor voice was so perfect then, and now in his late 60s it's lower and deeper tone. Aging has set in.
Fans will listen to Steve sing anything or speak in interviews or talk to a fan or anything else. No matter how old, because we are effected by it emotionally like he's a family member that has always been kind and supportive. It's just like that.
I'm not going to justify Steve Perry. He is a LEGEND, he does not need anyone to justify him. His voice, his technique are respected and admired by his colleagues, experts, voice coaches and by his audience. And an unknown guy from UA-cam is not going to say otherwise. He's The voice, you're nobody. :)
I agree.. but guess what.. Remember Cat Stevens? Well 'HE'S back as Yusaf Islam.. 38 years later. Some still have it.. and some just don't . 1970 - Where do the Children Play - ua-cam.com/video/eguD5AljSCI/v-deo.html 2015 - Where do the Children play - ua-cam.com/video/JGtNBUDLC7s/v-deo.html
His voice changed because he didn’t sing for many years. Your vocals get stronger as you sing everyday. Many years of singing helps the strong vocals. Since he’s singing again his vocals will get stronger again.
This Adam Mishan character is tripping, BAD. Do not EVER rip apart Steve like that. Dude hasn’t sang is almost 20 years. WAY better then this “vocal coach” could dream of doing even after two years away from the mic.
Steve's vocal tone is still superb. You really missed the boat on this one. Knowing that you can youtube surf for Steve's most recent activity, leads me to believe that you purposely set out to find a video that you could define him by; not very objective...or maybe you were totally uninformed of his new material that is rather very good.

I didn't even listen/watch this video, I just saw the title. Steve wasn't a trained singer, nor a vocal coach. You sound young, immature, and certainly haven't been in his shoes to judge. I like that Steve is a natural voice. You will never accomplish what he has, you are grasping straws.
How can you make these accusations without even watching the video? 🤣 you’re literally pulling it all from thin air, and Perry 1000% was trained. Just because he doesn’t have a degree doesn’t mean he wasn’t ever trained
40 something years between the recordings. The first recording is an "official" live recording performed in a stadium and recorded with equipment specifically designed for the purpose, the second in an very intimate setting recorded with an iPhone.. If you're statement is that he is older....well....yep, 40 something years later! I realize you are young and can't remember Steve Perry firsthand in the 1980's and the disappointment when he completely stopped performing and recording....and the utter joy that this performance gave those of us waiting 25 years to hear him once again, but critiquing his voice doesn't just seem narcissistic, it is flat out cruel to take away anything from his return. Most differences are because of the quality of the recording and musical backup (far less music accompanying him in the recent performance). Basically, these two videos don't provide an apples to apples comparison of his voice 40 years later, and it seems ridiculous for anyone who isn't a living musical legend who has been at the top of the game since the 1970's to give informed analysis.
in 1981 at that concert he was at his absolute peak so comparing that to a fun surprise appearance with a band who barely knows the song seems unfair. Also I notice that someone as young as you needs to use falsetto when doing his 1981 version....interesting.
because Steve used to be a rare tenor altino (high tenor/low alto) male singer...not even Arnel can imitate Steve's natural range. The only singer that actually still sounded like his recordings at damn near 60 was Prince and that was because Prince sang in falsetto 90% of the time. His speaking voice sounded like Barry White ffs. Michael Jackson was a tenor and he couldn't maintain past about 35-40 because he started at age 5. People think people should sing perfectly until age 90.
You really should have compared his LA Eels performance (not this one) to his voice in the 90s because his voice has held up remarkably well. You’re so wrong about his voice, even John 5 the guitarist says his voice is how he remembers from hearing on the radio. Its really stupid to compare his voice from 4 decades ago to his first performance in over twenty + years. Very unprofessional.
I love Steve Perry! Our voices change as we age; we're simply not going to sound at 70 like we did at 30. The range won't be the same... unless you're Frankie Valli.

True, everyone has an opinion but it seems like most agree..Steve Perry has a GORGEOUS vibrato even at 70 years old!! No one is going to sing as high in the vocal range at 70 as they did when they were in their 20's-30's!! This guy has NO CLUE how to critique fairly!!
Steve is a human like the rest of us. I too wonder how and why some singers age better than others. Mr Perry does not sound like he has the range, tone and control he had. There's nothing wrong in exploring the phenomenon and learning from it.
Bad analysis especially when he’s singing with a Indie band that uses different instruments from Journey and when this was his first live show that he had done in over 20 years. He sounded awesome during the Los Angeles show. You didn’t even observe that he tuned his voice to the band. He’s singing clear and higher on his new songs like “We’re Still Here.”
@@philgarvin6963 they weren’t at all starting to tune down for him. Steve Perry said in numerous interviews that Schon refused to do it due to the way he tuned his guitar. Steve Perry changed his vocal style starting with Frontiers. They changed the style of songs because they wanted a harder sound. Steve Perry said that Street Talk, his solo album is his actual lower register, r&b vocal style.
What happened to Steve Perry's voice?????? Nothing! He is still magnificent!!!!! You are questioning him? Who the bloody hell are you to question him? At that point, he had not sang in public for about 20 years. WTF??????
He abused his voice night after night for years of touring, the fact that he can sing at all boggles the mind. Of course, one doesn't keep the same speaking voice as one ages, so you can see it's not physically possible for the singing voice either. By the third concert with the Eels, one can tell he was shaking some of the rust off his pipes. There is a difference from the first to the third. A lot of respect for him doing that in front of people. Wish him the best. I love No Erasin'.
@FREEDOMVOICE888 Absolutely right just imagine, Steve said that during touring they performed up to two three times a day everyday with a day off being a travel day and on one tour they were gone from January and got back home Christmas eve... Imagine singing at that level like that for so many years? its a wonder he can still do much more than a croak. And as you mentioned the partying lack of rest, alcohol, drugs, women wow.💞
hes a great singer. But it doesn't mean that he's perfect. A healthy voice can reach old age with good hight notes and technique. Just look at Ken Tamplin for example. Not saying that singing is and easy stuff, it's pretty hard actually.
@@BacchusFA it's not about sounding exactly the same, I never said that. It's about staying healthy and able to sing hard repertoire. The voice always changes. Alfredo kraus is a great example
Besides the fact that he is older now, has it occurred to you that Journey had the money to have the best equipment, whereas, I doubt the Eels can afford the same quality equipment. His new al bum is pretty great.
Seriously dude??...you're gonna criticize his voice after a 20yr seclusion from singing???...well...hes singing again at 70 with great sound...btw...lose the yamika...however you spell it....and you cant criticize someone you were not even born yet to fully enjoy..
I respect the fact that you know your craft but you're critiquing one of the ALL TIME GREAT singers to date and saying that he lost his voice, which he so has NOT, he has AGED and cannot naturally hit the high notes anymore, is sooooo tacky. He also hasn't been singing for almost TWO DECADES so his voice needs some practice to get into shape. HUGE difference between aging/out of practice and "losing his voice!" I'm actually, as an AVID Steve Perry fan, then AND NOW, offended by your use of "lost his voice." You should probably use a little more tact and finesse when you're speaking about a musical/vocal GENIUS...uh, nooo, musical/vocal GOD such as Steve Perry who could back in the day and STILL can out sing you!! ;)
He needs to shut up. He gets the worst video of him singing.I guarantee that he would sound a lot better now. Of course everyone ages and loses some there range. The soundboard has a lot to do with it also.
...And he hadnt sang in quite a long time. I believe this is an off the cuff performance with the Eels. He hadnt performed in years. I think it's a damn good job considering the age he was then, and all the singing then, compared to the latest video. Good grief how can you compare a young seasoned voice to one that is much older and a little rusty because he hadnt sang/ performed in 2 decades??
As a singer - people seem to forget that we get colds, sore throats, dry throat, laryngitis, hoarseness and even vocal fatigue, which can make it very difficult and even impossible to hit nice and perfect notes with ease every time we open our mouths (no matter how young or old we are)... Therefore, we have to compensate in some form or another because the show must go on... I would be remiss if I were not to say that I can't imagine what being a singer who's world-renown and is in high demand, goes through after singing an hour or more over a loud band and thousands of people yelling and screaming, constantly, for years on end... It's bound to add wear and tare on top of other vocal issues that I've previously listed but Mr. Perry stil sounds better than a lot of newbies out there!
I believe this guy is just trying to teach or give a commentary on Steve’s changing voice. He’s not trying to be rude. Now we thank him for his opinion, then tell him: those of us who love and admire Steve Perry don’t care that he’s a human. And so, of course will change as time takes its toll on the body. I’m grateful Steve has decided to enjoy music again. I hope he knows how much we missed him. ❤️
I think everyone understood what he was singing. It was his singing style and I loved hearing him sing. Unfortunately, as we age our voices change. I sing and my voice has definitely changed, it makes me sad but it's life.
You should probably stick to teaching vocal technique. It wouldn’t hurt you to learn more as well. No offense. Any true professional knows that a professional vocal coach with teach you NOT to overpronounce when taking care of your voice in a live setting. Not tell you need to sing more like you would speak ? Really ? Ugh.. i need to get off this channel because I can’t fight the urge to flame just about everything about this.
Hi Adam, How old are you in the making of this video? How will you sound at 70? I had a great voice when I was in my early twenties, discovered by Capital records. I'm close to 60 now, and things are much more difficult now.
I’m sorry. I just can’t. This guy really thinks he’s the shit! Are you kidding?! The present day recording is 25 years later and recorded on an iPhone vs. the 80’s professional recording. EVERYONE’S voice falls to a lower key with age. Including legendary singers. Literally no one should be critical of a voice this special. Then or now. But a youtuber sitting there criticizing STEFE PERRY is beyond narcissistic. He’s telling Steve Perry how to sing? This dude think he’s going to be in the Rock Hall one day, too? No, no. Not cool!

If you really wanna see a real vocal master with decades of experience go to Ken Tamplin's channel. He shares expert opinion as well as tutorials.
Jon Bon Jovi named him "The Voice" back in the 80s and it stuck. He is the reason why singing contest shows are called "The Voice", thank you Jon Bon Jovi!
Stayin’ Sane he sounded amazing during his Eels performance in Los Angeles and the rust was gone. He also gained back his self-confidence.

Just shows. Life sucks. Only a few sweet moments.
Agree
LakeErieLove I also agree.

You’re not a Steve Perry quality with your falsettos. He was younger there. Vigorously touring and sounds great. At 72, he is still singing, not at the same quantity, but quality. See you at 72.
Is this supposed to be funny? Perry in his late 60's sounds much better than your attempts at the song. Does he sound the same in his 60's as he did in his 20's and 30's? No, but who does? Perry still sounds great!
100!!! Agree
Still the best singer ever, I think I speak for everyone when I say that.
Mr. Perry is and always will be the prettiest man I have ever seen!💕💯💯
Good grief, what is this video? The man is one of the finest vocalists of any genre to ever grace the stage. He is now in his seventies and can still sing a lot of modern vocalists under the table.
Man, Steve is 70 years old. Let see if you sing like him with 70 years Mr. know-it all.
Angela Acton Luther never change and he was the best ever!
Angela Acton whatever happened to Bono’s voice? I know he did got sick, I think what he had, it was bad.

Essentially this video proved that a person sang better in his 30's than his 70's....that's real intuitive
And all this in no way changes the fact that he had one of the best voices. That many still listen to regularly to this day (2023). Absolutely beautiful voice!!❤ 1978 - 80 are my favorite years.❤🔥🔥
Dude really. Let's see how you sound in 30+ years!!
He still has a great voice, it’s just lower now
He older
He still sounds great for being 70+
I would never allow myself to judge the voice of a legend like that. after a long hiatus he still sings fabulously and a lot better than they sing. the difference is that he has soul in his voice and feels the songs. steve certainly doesn't have to hide. I don't want to know how your voice is at his age sounds
Let’s see how good you sound at 70, after surviving years of abuse, overuse.
A good breakdown…….. in his earlier days I think it was stylistic choice on vowel chides etc.
He is remarkable and I greatly admire him.
He’s endured tragic loss and major illness and he’s come through.
Bravo
What do you expect? Him to be the same exact voice after all these years. He can sing in a trash can and I would be happy just to hear him sing.
When you go on the road for months at a time and sing at the range Steve Perry did for all of the years that he did, you would be dropping your jaw. which is correct technique by the way, in spots to help yourself get through all those nights just like he did.
same with Mariah and Whitney...it was all over by year 20. 2005 for Whitney and 2010 for Mariah.
Did this mayn just give advice to Steve Perry? Maybe next video tell Jordan how to dribble. Check yoself.
Exactly, it's like expecting Schwarzenegger to lift the same weight now that he did when he was Mr Olympia.
This must be some type of repost because that video of Steve with The Eels was in 2015 and he did this on a whim after not singing, virtually at all, since about 1998! So it's very unfair to critique him in this situation. You should get a video from his 2019 album Traces if you want a true performance to critique.
MR PERRY.. WILL ALWAYS BE THE VOICE!! AND STILL LOOKS GOOD TOOO!!!!
No need for speculation ... he's just older, voices change, it's called being human , what matters is that he still sings like champ ❤
Go pound sand. He's older, and the voice is changed, but.... He still sounds fantastic. Plus, your basing your criticism on an old performance.
Age? What a crappy attempt at clickbait. Really tells about the quality of your person.
you teaching to Steve Petty how to sing? funny
Yes, it really takes a set of balls to do this. Critiquing Steve Perry!!!
Come on. He sounds awful. I am fan but I can't listen to him singing off key and bellowing.
You are critiquing a man using video from 1981 vs. 2014. GFYS, thinking you are some expert on his voice or anyone else's voice.
Im going to be honest . You are no comparison to Steve Perry . You cant even wear his jock strap ! Steve Perry is a God at any age !
Steve Perry can do what ever he wants... It's his song... Man, bad idea creating this video
That's Perry now, reality bites. It happens to all.
its journeys song legally speaking not steve's....
the fact is he left journey to die maybe he lost his voice or for his solo act only to know that his solo act was just a flop...
You need to listen to Traces. It’s a wonderful album.
Aging has set in.
waste of time, nit picking at its best.
Fans will listen to Steve sing anything or speak in interviews or talk to a fan or anything else. No matter how old, because we are effected by it emotionally like he's a family member that has always been kind and supportive. It's just like that.
Richard Ceresa Yeah, Steve is family❣️
Perfectly explained! ;)
Yes, yes yes!!!!Steve is amazing THEN and NOW

His voice changed because he didn’t sing for many years. Your vocals get stronger as you sing everyday. Many years of singing helps the strong vocals. Since he’s singing again his vocals will get stronger again.
Totally !!!!
Do you know why he stopped singing?

Steve has been trained as a child and young adult. Labels always hire vocal trainers to maintain on the road strain.

Oh yeah! What's up with that?!
because Steve used to be a rare tenor altino (high tenor/low alto) male singer...not even Arnel can imitate Steve's natural range.
@@Dutchess80 Gino Vannelli is also a freak of nature

Its really stupid to compare his voice from 4 decades ago to his first performance in over twenty + years. Very unprofessional.

Steve is a human like the rest of us. I too wonder how and why some singers age better than others. Mr Perry does not sound like he has the range, tone and control he had. There's nothing wrong in exploring the phenomenon and learning from it.
His Traces album proves that he was at least at 80%. Sure age has caught up to him, but it hasn't robbed him of his voice totally.
Steve Perry is my inspiration and hes the best no matter what! Blessings
A lot of respect for him doing that in front of people. Wish him the best. I love No Erasin'.

HUGE difference between aging/out of practice and "losing his voice!" I'm actually, as an AVID Steve Perry fan, then AND NOW, offended by your use of "lost his voice." I literally started crying hearing the newer one ... so happy his voice is still good. The emotion in his voice is untouchable by anyone else.
...And he hadnt sang in quite a long time.
What can we say but he is a legend.
Especially with the new album, you can tell he is able to hit those high notes if he wants to.
I hope you’re reading what EVERYONE is saying. You are way too critical 🤷♀️. We love his voice...then and now.
Dude that was 1981. Duhhhhhh.
