It really does show just how similar the character designs are even though they were made such a long time apart from one another

I KNEW it. The design is just too recognizable. Glad to see I wasn't just imagining the similarities. XD
I'd even started thinking that maybe the Daft Punk movie was actually just the singing parts from an anime musical that Daft Punk had made the soundtrack to....

I love how the video makes us realize this just by sneaking in 20 seconds of it. Don't even need words when we can deduce the reason for its inclusion.

Your point about Japanese creators running their properties to the ground shares my pain on sequels and spinoffs. Like damn, chill on that shit. Please.

It's largely because they were kinda forced to after their other original works didn't catch on, and people demanded more of the same, especially Nagai, just look at all the manga he has made, there are many, many strange original concepts and stories, even at this very moment he is working on some dystopian sci-fi gender-bender cop manga.
Matsumoto Reiji got around a bit with just not-caring about the consistency of his universe and just plopped in anything he wanted, it's more of a strange conceptual fantasy than a sci-fi, a lot like a very trippy star-trek, often focused more on episodic ideas and concepts than the characters.

Well, sequels and spinoffs can be fun if they are done right and consistent with each other.
I'm not a fan of alternative story lines and changing the universe and characters, though.

Tomasz Wota It mainly bothers me with series that never needed any. To me seeing fans talk about how happy they are for a series like Cardcaptor Sakura to continue again when everything was resolved beforehand it gets weird. With Clear Card I kind of feel like no one even knows where it's going at this point. I mean, the original anime ended in the early 2000's...
Now a series like Tiger & Bunny would make sense because things were left untied up, but when I see it being done to series like the above or even ones like Madoka it becaomes a headache.

The best series to me are the ones that come and go. Respecting their own ability to create great art, while respecting their own audience enough to not drain them of all their cash and sense

I remember the seeds of my babby weebdom were planted by that week-long anime movie special with an Elvira-style host that the Sci-Fi Channel ran in the early 2000s. They showed dubs of 999 and Adieu. That was some of the first anime I'd ever seen and definitely the first full-length ones and with any kind of emotional depth. I've been scared to watch them ever since because child me still considers both masterpieces.

    • @TheTMKF

I have a friend who's a big sakuga nerd who had the same experience. The 999 movie shown on SciFi was formative for him, and he has very good taste to this day. When we were teenagers I stumbled across a VHS version of Dagger of Kamui. He got all excited that Rintaro was involved, but as an actual film it was totally nonsensical and the dub made it even worse. So me and another friend savagely MST3K'd it the whole time, while the 999 fan was like, "But the animation is very inventive...."

Hey!!! As someone who's watched all 113 episodes of Galaxy Express 999, both movies, and the ending to the series, "Eternal Fantasy", I really recommend that people watch the series! Although it can be cheesy at times, its still a really good watch. There are many imperfections, such as a number of plot holes, but nothing that would detract from the questions posed by the situations the characters are put into. Also, Tetsuro is canonically short and ugly so I easily relate to him.

Digibro You pointing out how Adieu Galaxy Express 39 was both terrible and wonderful to watch because of how it could be such a beautiful film but yet narratively was kind of a mess kind of reminded me of the first Star Trek motion picture. Nothing really happens in that film but yet it was just this psychedelic sort of trip going through space. Nothing like the previous series before it.

Fucking Davoo, on this latest Digibro video, was a bigger appeal than Digi himself. Nothing wrong with Digi's video, it was great, but Davoo's editing of it was so great that I had to watch it twice. Digi don't let you employee be better than you! Step it up!
Like, I was one of those who did not even watch the video of Digi's stuff for so long, like he complained about recently. Because I never felt it was any good. But Davoo has, pretty much since "The last high school anime" been so on top of his game and overperforming that I've been forced to watch the videos. "There is too much anime" and "The great director who forgot" are some of my favorite editjobs ever by anyone as well.
And watching Digi's editing on the Devilman video, I really could see the difference in detail and quality of work. It was massively less inventive and engaging to watch. The clip selection did it's job in that one, but it never stood out and impressed on it's own.
Davoo, you are a hero of content. Keep at it man. You have so much respect from me.

Galaxy Express 999 was one of the very first Anime titles that I ever watched. As a kid it completely blew my mind, and made me want more. But in the early 90s pre internet, I had to wait for the Anime move they played every friday (or was it saturday...?) night on the space channel. I watched many classics on there: Ninja Scroll, Wings of Honneamise, Gal Force, and so many more.

    • @bloodmachine6049
      @bloodmachine6049 6 років тому +2

What sci-fi tv series has not mixed sci-fi and adventure ? It's like the most common combination, Start Trek, DR Who, Flash Gordon, Buck Rodgers and so on. It has a huge history, only later the non-adventure ones started to permeate. Not to mention how much of an impact Star Wars had, which was very much based on those.
Though 999 and Harlock are very much more thoughtful and conceptual.

Boo Machine Right... I forgot about those franchises. Most of my tastes are centred around anime and manga, so I tend to forget about what the West has achieved with its entertainment.
I meant by sci-fi/Adventure to Anime/Manga, since my idea of sci-fi is usually people staying in one location and showing the various concepts that centre around the influence of technology on human morality.

That's actually very much a thing in Harlock and 999, in individual episodes at least.

That was a fun trip. Rintaro got a taste of weirdly open creative freedom and then NOTHING COULD STOP HIM SINCE, NO MATTER HOW NONSENSICAL HIS WORK WAS.
    That said, still like Metropolis
also though, its best viewed as a trippy music video while drunk and with friend style commentary
they need to be drunk too

Resort Boin & Kanojo x Kanoko x Kanojo are definitely better than your tipical low budget hentai tho.
      Let's just say they're all Porn/10.

while there are many of those classic movies I have yet to see (really want to check out beautiful dreamers) I kind of think it would be a good thing to have arthouse directors to be able to play with establish franchises.

I am watching the Galaxy Express 999 SHOW, because I was afraid the movies would just be abridged versions with scenes awkwardly smashed together without regards for continuity of pacing. Turns out it's a completely different kind of disaster.

Those are legendary Animes. 999 and Yamato are basically the Evangelion of 1970s. Ask anyone from Japan that watched 999 and Yamato back in the 70s and they'll tell you it was fucking amazing.

Also, I know this is off topic, but have you checked out Darling in the Franxx yet? I'd love to see your opinion on it and your channel will definetly give it the hype it needs. It's pretty intriguing too so far and it's Kill la Kill, Kiznaiver and Gurren Lagann's love child.

Like "This is fucking awesome" nuts or "This is fucking weird" nuts?
Coming from someone who has only seen the first 999 film, which provided quite a bit of both, I'm curious.

    • @robertbaillargeon3683
      @robertbaillargeon3683 6 років тому +1

Mostly weird nuts, but definitely a bit of both. I think the most jarring part was how much the simplistic, childish animation contrasted with the super serious story. Ralph Bakshi used that contrast as kind of a joke in Fritz the Cat, but it's supposed to be taken dead seriously here.

Maybe I am a shit eater but all the Go Nagai bullshit/re imagining by other people as well himself are mostly positive in my book. He runs his stuff to the ground, sure, but either they are so batshit you love it (Manga Mazinkaiser) or make so much sense you'll love it too (Recent Mazinkaiser anime, Getter Robot's spin offs, hell the recent Devilman netflix thing).
