The prompts are always the same each time you play out or retry a scene. There are specific scenes that will change course if you fail a certain prompt, or give you a choice such as in a chase scene. But for the most part if you fail a prompt it will simply move to the next one until you fail enough to have to retry. On the retry the prompts will be the same as they were the first try.

I believe Dragon's Lair and other games introduced QTE's but Shenmue is the game that popularized them to what they are now.😢
