      Rhys, I just found another issue... it's 1/8 thickness.
      the Ontario is 1/4 inch...
      and the Ontario is 2 ounces heavier....
      So ... no ...they are NOT the same... same shape, but ...that Ontario would out perform it by a mile.

    Bought one of these a LOOOONG time ago for a buddy. We took it camping and he went to chop a few small branches off a dead tree-- nothing crazy, maybe 1-1.5" diameter-- and the blade broke clean in half on his 2nd swing and went flying. By pure dint of luck, no one was hurt. Called S&W to get a refund and they fought me like mad, only offering a replacement. In the end, I gave up. I figured better to have lost the money than to risk having another one of these things go bad in a very dangerous way. Maybe they've improved the quality or maybe my friend just got a defective unit, but if you ever have an issue S&W's customer service is terrible. Either way, buyer beware.

    I love me some Khukuris like the HIMIMPS and Tora blades, and especially my Cold steel Ghurkhas, but there's a place in my heart for the Ontarios and this too Brian. Some call them KLOs, but if they save me the time and effort of reconvexing a proper Khukuri I mean why not?? It's like the Schrade froe thing..20 or 30 bucks vs re sharpening a fine woodsmans tool...I'm there all day. I'd put a proper big SNAP on that sheathe, and waterproof the day lights out of it the best I could, and use. It!

    I purchased a stainless steel model they made. It's a 20th Anniversary Smith and Wesson kuhkri and they were on clearance. I thought it would be nice just to have at least one khukri design blade and the stainless is good for chopping fruit from trees in our yard.
    I decided to clean the blade, like polish it up nice and shiny and nearly took off the top of my finger. It is that sharp out of the package.

    Its not high carbon steel, amazon has no mention of that other than stainless steel... of some sort, usually if the grade of steel osnt mentioned, it's low end cheap steel.

    Bryan, love your videos . Keep 'em coming! It seems you are plagued with skeeters in most of your videos. Try Raid Yard Guard mosquito fogger. My wife uses this when she's working in the garden. Works great. Lasts up to 6hrs on a 30 x 30ft area. She buys it at Home Depot. Good Luck!

    For a lower priced Khukuri design, I think this, Ontario, Kbar or Condor will do fine. My number one choice is Himalayan imports CAK...BIG HEAVY MONSTER...replaces an axe. But I've carried and used the Cold Steel Ghurkha Khukuri for years as well as their Khukuri shaped machetes.

  • @mt_baldwin
    @mt_baldwin 7 років тому +1

    Thanks, I've been wondering about this one. Think I'm gonna stick to the actual schrade version, by leaps and bounds I prefer 3cr13mov over 7cr17mov. But I do like these
    pseudo-kukri with thinner blade stock, the real ones are shockingly heavy, if this were a direct copy of a real one it would be literally twice the weight.

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  7 років тому

      I probably would never notice a difference in the steel

    • @rockwell7968
      @rockwell7968 7 років тому

      At first I´ve had prejudices because stainless steel is more brittle but the Bushcraft Gurkha Kukri performed well as a machete and camp knife. I even cleaned a pike with it, processed wood and done light batoning. -Chunks or chips so far.

    • @mt_baldwin
      @mt_baldwin 7 років тому +1

      Rock Well, it's not because it's stainless it's because none of my sharpening methods work on 7cr17, I've got 6 of them and once the factory edge is gone I can't get it back, I've got 5 3cr13 blades and all of them are as nasty sharp as any of my high carbon blades. I've tried Arkansas and diamond stones, ceramic rods and sand paper,

    • @rockwell7968
      @rockwell7968 7 років тому

      I took a one of these diamond dust sharpener and the sharpness was quite worksharp.
      Of course you're right, high carbon steel takes an awesome edge. :) Last week I got a new morakniv and I was surprised how (nearly stupid) sharp hc steel can be.

    This particular model would not be one Ild choose but Im spoiled. I do like the 7Cr17 steel on smaller blades.
    Oh Smith & Wesson, Schrade and Old Timer have been the same company for over a dozen years so no idea what this buy out talk is. I still bave a few knives from back when S&W/Schrade first started making S&W knives.

  • @Saya-fs1jo
    @Saya-fs1jo 7 років тому

    I've had one of these for a few years, so their heat treating may be a lot better now. but on mine the steel never felt dence it balanced odly rearward for the profile it has, and it never bit deep at all when chopping, almost has an aluminum feel in a way, edge was not great but okay, its much more a cheap combat knife in form and function. if anyone's interested in this I'd also recommend having a look at a cold steel khukris machete, they bite much deeper and have a khukri balance point and far better utilitarian use with a snighly better hardness but feels more like a steel, and both at a comparable price. I have both and vastly prefer the cold steel with a little edge word going convex it keeps up with most hardware store reground axxes. or buy both their cheap!

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  7 років тому

      I am sure it will do fine. 25 years ago most of us would not even know much about different steels in the "pre-Google" days. We'd just sharpen blades when they get dull and go on about our business

    • @RoyFernbach
      @RoyFernbach 7 років тому

      I agree with you for the most part... but 25-35-45 years ago we really only had choices like "Stainless" or "High Carbon"... nowadays you get all these Chinese steels and you really have to wonder if they are any good. I am a 47 year old man with lot of knives, and the only one I have that is made with those "CR" steels is the Schrade SCHF45 "LeRoy" Bowie (something I won from Schrade themselves)... and really, I have yet to stress it very hard (a bunch of youtubers showed the brittle nature of the beast ... search "SCHF45 Fail")

    It certainly seemed to have good penetration of the Balance Orientation And Rotation Device. Notwithstanding that, I remain very skeptical of Smith and Wesson designs, even though they are manufactured by the same company as Schrade. They have been manufactured by Schrade for years, and there have been quality issues for years. It's not really remarkable. Several companies (Boker for example) have multiple product lines with differing levels of materials and quality control between them. I'll trust that S&W is offering quality products when I see long-term, hard-use testing of said products from a variety of reviewers, with consistent high performance. I'm not questioning your particular experience, but simply saying it is one data point that runs contrary to the many failures that have earned the S&W brand a bad reputation.

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  7 років тому +1

      I think in the past many of the S&W knives have been aimed at big box stores and compromises have had to be made to meet the required price points. I think a lot of people don't realize how much influence the Walmarts of the world have on the products they sell, either directly or indirectly through price point requirements. Of course, manufacturers can always say no but I'd hate to have to go home and tell my wife I turned down a deal that would secure our grandkids educations because I refused to create a low budget product.

    • @charlescollier7217
      @charlescollier7217 7 років тому

      Survival On Purpose Yeah, I have no doubt about the market demands, and the power of the profit motive. All I'm saying is that the bad reputation is well-earned, and we consumers cannot be faulted for being skeptical about purported improvements. The Schrade brand had the same issue, and still does to some degree, but by consistently producing good products, and having them be tested hard by a number of people, they've made some gains at redeeming their name. The S&W brand will have to do the same.

      I wish I could "think" in metric, it is so much easier. I was never in the military or I probably could. But I am constantly amazed at the hostile comments I get over my little tongue in cheek joke. Most of them, like the one I got this morning, don't make it past the profanity filter.

      Survival On Purpose The metric complisult always cracks me up. Don't you dare stop it. P on them if they can't take a joke. Science and engineering disciplines use metric because it makes the math easier but there is nothing inherently wrong with either system. That's like saying there is a "best" spoken language. Nonsense.
