  • 90 years after Mary Tourtell created Rupert, he and his mixed-species chums are still having adventures in Nutwood (some were quite trippy, especially the Bestall-drawn annuals).
'White Horses' singer Jackie was chosen to sing the theme when the bear got his first TV cartoon series in 1970

Boy, this brings back some pleasant memories; school's out and watching (and listening to) great programmes like this as a kid, back in the early '70s. Thanks for the trip down memory lane - very enjoyable!

I had this record back in the early '70's and it always has remained an all time favorites...such a friendly and 'safe' sound in her voice... always makes me smile. I have played this to my 4 year old niece, and shes always singing it now ..timeless!!...this was also the theme to the TV show which was also a favorite

Hi Michael, thanks for your comment. I would have written an answer a lot earlier than this if I had found the site sooner. As I say better late than never I suppose. I am fine thanks for asking.

I would just like to say big thank you to all of the people that written such nice comments regarding my recording of Rupert. I anyone would like to know what those clip clop noises are all through the record. It was my ex husband Len Beadle aka (Frank Weston) who co wrote the song and also wrote the score. He cupped both hands and banged them together to get that noise. In fact he used to do it to make me laugh when we were first married.

I know this is a great track and i played it soooooo many times as a kid back in the 70's but one day i decided to turn it over and play side B and that was it! Rupert had to go.I know know,it sounds cruel but 'Going To The Circus' blew me away and my poor stylus went blunt rather quickly. I loved that single, just like the one in the clip here.Salad days! Thanks Jackie x

The annual at 1:20 is from 1973 and it was the last annual that Illustrator Alfred Bestall did. Originally Rupert had a brown face in the cover art, as he did on all previous covers, but the editors of the 1973 annual decided to make it white at the last minute without informing Bestall about it. Bestall complained that this was artistically wrong but to no avail. The white face stayed. As a result, Bestall declined from doing any more annual covers. However, apparently a small print run of the 1973 annual was made with a brown-faced Rupert, before they decided to change it. These are very rare and valuable if you ever find one! For me the 1973 annual marks the beginning of the decline of Rupert. The best annuals were from the 1950s.

Listening to this music I have visions of close up images of Rupert the Bear. Was that in the opening sequence of the tv show in the 70’s?
