Rupert Bear A Britsh Icon 1960s

In this video we take a look at Rupert and friends, finishing off with the 1964 Annual , to me there is something about those illustrations that seem not just familiar but some how comforting, did you read them? did you watch the tv show? let me know in the comments.

Cheers for letting us remember more innocent times. Well, for children anyway. I also used to collect Robertson jam badges, with the musical instruments. Never twigged about the colour, just liked the variety

it is strange how even though one of my mates at school was black I never twigged the connection
Maybe when something is highlighted then it becomes even more of an issue.

Brilliant! Thanks again. I will confess to rarely ever reading the long version of events. I loved the characters - I think I had the hots for the Chinese girl! Haha! Like you, I never joined any dots regarding racism. I don't know what was in the mind of the artist but perhaps there was no ill intent there either: maybe just an ignorance of the effect the illustrations might have on some people.
