Tom Anderson, better known online as MySpace Tom, was, for a brief period in the early 2000s, arguably the most popular man on the internet. Boasting over 200 million friends at the apex of MySpace’s popularity, Tom was everybody who signed up to use the site’s first, but hopefully not only, friend. So what is he doing now and why was he everyone’s friend?

People misuse that word nowadays... it actually used to be "unarguably " as in undisputable.
Just like people nowadays misuse the word " literal "... I wish you would do a piece on people misusing and abusing the word
" literal " nowadays ... it is very frustrating .. for whatever reason people today seem to think it means really or very , as opposed to something that actually happened

hi. hope you can respond or just take into consideration for your own benefit. i have been using a crap laptop more than my phone lately and i automatically watch my videos at 1080p60HD; for some reason no matter how long i paused your videos and let them buffer, they kept on pausing about every 4-6 seconds for .5-1 second. i've sadly clicked off of a number of your videos because of this. today it happened again and i decided to switch the quality to 480p (no offense, but i like listening to you talk & gathering information, i'm not looking for the quality of a makeup product or something). maybe a quick disclaimer at the beginning of your video may be of use to some people, thus lessening the chance that anyone would click off out of frustration like me and have to miss out on cool new information. thanks so much if you read this, i just figured i'd do my part and share what information i can with this channel that i enjoy so very much. - Pocket

It was better than Facebook, you could do literally what you wanted and express yourself in a very different manner than Facebook allows you to. Facebook is just kinda meh, easy for chat messages and advertising tho.

as a young teen it taught me basic HTML, something we weren't learning until high school at the time! i remember a 16 year old girl got rich from making myspace layouts, too. much more talent than half the youtubers out there, who just blog or make useless prank videos on their boyfriends and girlfriends.

I don't have either one, now. The only reason, that I even got a Facebook, is because all my friends got a Facebook. Now, I've come to see, that email works pretty well. Being a teenager in the days of Myspace, that was something else though.

The whole top friendships thing was so stupid, often you'd see people including people they had never met in their top friendships just because they wanted top appeal to that person... If you lost a friend because they didn't list you then they were probably a dog bitch... I never even used the feature, but if you rank some rando on the internet above your school friends... Which wasn't uncommon... You can understand why it was such a stupid feature... People like facebook because they aren't reminded about how little they really matter to somebody who spends 50% of their time with them... School friendships have always been a huge joke.

MySpace was way ahead of it's time. It was in its prime when they developed the 2.0 profiles. Facebook still can't top what MySpace did. When Tom sold MySpace to FOX, it was over. The MySpace Forums were the best part of the whole experience, in my opinion. I met a lot of great people in those forums. Most of them were moderators who volunteered to keep the forums clean. My favorite moderators were redrum and fer~fer. I'll never forget them. My screen-name was ~5mark (aka. ratio, aka. Matthewkd) and I hung out in the Filmmaker Forum. Those were the days.

The "plain old dumb luck" comes from Friendster's servers being horrendously slow in Summer 2003. Everyone who was out of school was joining Friendster until it became so slow that nobody could use it. So everyone who was already on Friendster migrated over to MySpace by the end of that year and Friendster died a pretty fast death after that.

Customization is great, except when it's done poorly -- I remember seeing profiles where you couldn't read any of the text because of a poorly chosen text color and background picture combination. I was rather late to MySpace, I think I already was on Facebook, around 2008ish. And being older, I saw it as mostly stupid online games (Mafia Wars, etc.) that I didn't care about. The custom profiles were OK, but Facebook's News Feed (at the time) was better for keeping track of what your friends were doing...

I still have a little shirt pin that I got from MySpace way back from the 1st or 2nd year the site was around. I used to make all kinds of unique profile layouts on MySpace, used to code Flash and would make my page into all kinds of different Flash layouts with animations. 1 of my favorites was a layout that was a Nintendo DS with each screen having different information/links and each of the face buttons being links to other pages. It was pretty cool and I made it back whenever the DS came out originally. The layout customization and the bands was what I was there for, when they started to change everything around 2009-2010 was when I was done with the site.
