Things got a little active after it left Oamaru on the return journey. Sparks started grass fires along the trackside from the sale yards just out of Oamaru to south of Totara. Every fire appliance that could carry water was called out - some from north of the Waitaki River. There was also at least one helicopter with a monsoon bucket.
Yes I know, after that bridge shot I helped put out some of the fires. We used whatever we could to put them out but further down the line it just went up spectacularly and there was nothing we could do.
@@MartyJM01 I live in Weston and had gone into town to watch the train leave. On the way home I saw the Weston fire engine hosing the grass at the sale yards and decided to follow it when it headed south instead of returning to base. Heading down SH1 through Alma, towards Totara, all I could see was smoke in the sky and when I turned off on to Fortification Road and looked north towards Oamaru, the scale of the fires was spectacular.
