This brings a lot of memory back to me. I served in that area on the north side of Imjin River in 1st infantry Division Recon Battalion with ROK Army from 1989 to 1991. DMZ is one of best preserved nature area due to lack of human activities. My biggest fear was not North Korean soldiers, it was landmines. Some of the areas were clear of mines, others were not. Some areas planted with mines on purpose on the purpose of slowing down N. Korean Army in the case of invasion. And some areas were unmarked and those were most dangerous. I was always reminded to stay on the beaten path. Off the beaten path is not imaginable where I served. One of my high school classmate died in a landmine accident. one of my middle school classmate was injured on a separate accident. I remember one incident that whole Recon team coming back from ambush in DMZ were killed by friendly fire. Those incidents were never reported on the media back then. Things have changed a lot since then. Industrial zone was built there. A lot of progress has been made. Still a log way to go. I'm praying for the Unified Korea hopefully in my lifetime.

I totally understand the viewpoint of Pete in regard to his impression on DMZ. In my opinion, S Koreans have lived with such fear and tension against North for nearly 70 years, so such feelings became a part of life over the time and S Koreans naturally overcame such fear and tension and started living a daily life without concerning such dreadful feelings too much. That's does not mean that S Korean forget about the existence of hostile Northern neighbors. In fact, S Korea is quite ready to deal with N Korea and surrounding hostiles with an iron-clad alliance with the US!

The pregnant cows where significant because before the fall of
Soviet Union, North Korea was flush with food and supplies (much wealthier then south) but after the fall of the soviet people in the north where starving to death. South sent north supplies to rebuild farming in the north but most if not all the wealth went into the armaments and pockets of the powers of North Korea.
