Nike is back at it yet again!
With Eliud Kipchoge backing this new design, more hype and controversy surround these shoes than any other shoe in the world. Along with the Nike Air Zoom Alphafly NEXT%, Nike unveiled their new Trainers the Tempo Next% and the Tempo Next % FlyEase. Also, the new Nike Viperfly (spikes) are out to change the game of the 100 Meters.
What are your thoughts on these new shoes?
0:19 Oh shit Nike Air Zoom Alphafly Next% can’t hear us it has AirPods in
Lol
Mike Hawk why is nobody laughing about this comment? Great one mate!😂😂
XD
You stole my thought 🐌
I was waiting for someone to say that!
My dad is gonna look fresh grilling in these shoes.

Me too !!!

It’s like people disregard the fact that even with the shoes, you still have to be an elite athlete.
That's racism bra
@@ObeseGorilla229 I'm shocked as well
100% agree.
And they probably don't train in them until the last month or so to get used to them for the comp. All that foam on the ass is basically forcing a runner to have bad form and heel strike. When you see how he runs, he's still landing like he's barefoot, landing on his forefoot and whipping straight back with a crazy rate. Not heel strike rolling like they've been designed for.
The shoes don't mean shit here, he's just that good. Put them on some random person and say goodbye to their knees within a couple months.
@@thedodsonful elite athletes also take peds, if you believe Olympics athletes are natural you're just delusional
Absolutely every top athlete is on something, to be a competitive athlete today you need elite genetics, insane work ethic and those secrets vitamins
There has not been technological innovation in the sneaker world for so long, and when someone takes a step forward they wanna ban it lmao
Yeah, like just give the same new shoes to all athletes, and the problem is solved like wtf
Xan Hede That would put all other shoe companies out of business.
the market for these kind of sneakers must be like the 1% of total sales, only the elite runners would buy them so i don't think any company will go out of business because the preference of the 1%
First time? Rotary engines got banned in Le Mans after being used just once lol
Haha step forward
"if these shoes are not available for purchase by April 30th they will not be available for the Olympic games"
*laughs in covid-19*
laughs in whinny pooh
As long as everybody has access to the shoes I say legalize them.
I agree, for us amateur athletes; it's still purely unfair for record holdings though.
joseppi4cinqua that’s the problem only Nike athletes have them
Mike S who had them doesn’t concern me. If everybody has access to them then it’s fair game.
@Oricand they're at the Olympic games ffs everybody got money
legalize, tax, and regulate them

The spikes look awesome, don’t really like the colors but idea in calling them viperflys is genius
I would totally rock those spikes just looking at them I can tell they're gonna feel so fast and probably perform so as well
Although they do need to be able to withstand the force a sprinter puts into the ground if they have a problem with those airpods itd be to do with that more than anything
Byron McKenzie zoom is definitely strong enough to withstand the force a sprinter puts in it
@@y-rokenjnr6157 I agree about the colour. I will be waiting for future colourways.
@@y-rokenjnr6157 I would think the airpods dissipate the force and the runner loses power.
"When they talk about the shoe and forget about the man."
There is a lot to be found on the man, the champ, the world record holder. No one is discrediting his greatness. But we all wanna know if the 2h barrior was human or technology.
Nike just told the whole running community to clock out for break.
I don't understand the whole controversy. It just sounds like the competition is being salty that Nike is too good at designing shoes. Also, calling anything in the shoe a "propulsion system" at is blatantly misleading. The shoes are providing ZERO propulsion and it's still all coming from the athlete. That should really be the only regulation, that shoes can't generate their own propulsion. It's not Nike's fault that everyone else can't keep up.
@@wuhanclan facts man
@@wuhanclan I agree. Seems to me that a "propulsion system" would have to add propellant energy to the object being propelled in order be considered a propulsion system. In this case, no external energy is being added to that provided by the runner. The term that I really despise is "mechanical doping." That's a blatantly dishonest smear.
@@wuhanclan That guy is an amazing athlete. I believe he can run in chuck Taylors and win it.

To put things into perspective I trained for 2 years straight in high school. 5 miles a day average and my time for the mile was 4:41 seconds and I literally threw up after that race...... this guy can do that for 26 miles 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯

If the runners all chose to wear these, that dude would still have won, they chose to wear what suited themselves, weak moan from the other runners.

@@ghostendgame considering he has won every marathon major in the last 7 years, it's pretty safe to assume he would have won.
Ghost EndGame you guys do know that Kipchoge’s sub 2 hour wasn’t a race right? It was built for Kipchoge to break 2 hours specifically, and I’m pretty sure Kipchoge helped design the shoe
@@Pinkadot321 yah and he had multiple pace setters that would switch out during the "race" and they would run in front of him to break the wind resistance.
Great update and explanation. I'm not a big Nike fan, but I'll take my hat off to them for taking a big step ahead of others. I agree that we need technology to continue, but it needs to be fair for all, so having a rule book to design to will help. Interesting times.
Those look like the most comfortable pair of shoes I've ever seen.
Nike needs to keep making the three plate version for us mere mortals to run in. They just can’t get used in the Olympics.
I'm flexing so hard my SHOES have airpods
It's so easy to add little wheels with a diameter less than 40mm so that runners can have a little rest as they break world records in the future.

Keep in mind these regulations currently only apply to “elite/ pro athletes” in World Athletics sanctioned events, so this does not mean everyone else can’t continue to wear the banned shoes in a race
It means that by being banned they aren't gonna be available/produced......duhhhh.....
For Nike probably, but there’s NOTHING preventing shoe manufactures from continuing to make shoes available to the masses that don’t comply with those regulations
It's not like they're adding propulsion, they're just increasing efficiency with added comfort. It's good to see inovation in a product that has basically remained unchanged in decades. I'm excited to the competition!
6:02 It should be pointed out that all of the shoes in this frame (apart from said Tempo Next%s feature carbon fiber plates!)
So just to be clear, Nike presented 5 shoes, 3 of them with carbon fiber plates:
Track Spikes:
Nike Air Zoom Victory (800m - 10,000m, Carbon fiber plate)
Nike Air Zoom Viperfly (100m, Carbon fiber plate)
Training:
Nike Air Zoom Tempo NEXT%
Nike Air Zoom Tempo NEXT% FlyEase
Marathon:
Nike Air Zoom Alphafly NEXT% (real shit)
Yes this video is very wrong alphaflys were under development with 1 carbon fibre plate for a long time not just since the ban and nike said viperflys have 3 plates and were working towards reducing it to 2 to make it legal as you are allowed 2 plates as one of the plates ia used for attaching the spikes and the tempo shoes are illegal because their stack height is too high but they are not trying to make them legal as they are not meant for races they are meant for training.
Nicholas Fogale I agree that a 1 plate Alphafly has been in development for a long time (and there has never been confirmation that kipchoges prototype had 3 plates(!!!)) but something that definitely doesn’t have 3 plates is the Viperfly! There is no way more than one can fit in that thing and they have designed it specifically for the use in competition (so why would they put in 3 plates and make it illegal?)
@@nicholasfogale6835 You are right and this video is wrong and the channel has lost credibility because of this

It's not a bad thing if the gear evolves with the athlete. Regulations are important but this is how to do it let room for improvements but don't let it get to absurd.

I wanna buy immediately these shoes just for my amateur training, but not being allowed to partecipate in the Olympics' game in Tokyo really stops me :) :) :)
Jim Peters was the first man to run a marathon in under 2 hours 20 minutes. He did it wearing a pair of plimsolls (or pumps) he bought at Woolworths.
Andrew Spencer I'd like to see today's athletes run in pumps to see what their times would be.
Nike trying their hardest to please the WAF and follow the marked availability standards to make it in the Olympics.....
Covid-19: HOLD MY BAT!!!
Really impressed by the way you express every detail of it 👍🏻
Do these shoes really dramatically improve your running? Asking as a casual runner, not training for any events or anything.
I’m a 45 minute 10k-er. That is I’m past my prime and not fast. I have run a local hilly road 10k 5 years out of 6, in recent years.
This January I ran it in Nike Next% (not the version with the AirPad and multiple carbon fibre inserts, an earlier version). I took 80 seconds off my previous best time for that race, felt better at the end and recovered faster.
In previous years I had improved my time by between 3 and 30 seconds from year to year. It could be the placebo effect, it could be that training the same programme as previous years somehow accumulated and worked out better this year, but I think the shoes must take some of the credit for that 80 seconds improvement!
George Row
I improved my 5K time by 3 minutes In some discontinued Saucony shoes I bought for $50. Placebo effect is the correct word you used. After all, you have to justify the money you spent as everyone who does the same thing.

Agreed. Give a lot of room for innovation. It will be an exciting few years moving forward. I just hope other companies can create good products in a timely fashion.
@@TotalRunningProductions nike made the new regulations and the IAAF/Wolrd athletic bend over them. Coe is so compromise that sick
In swimming they had a similar issue with the Tech Suits they band a good amount of them in 2010.
I don’t understand, if everyone can have the shoe, then why should it be banned from events.
Athletes sponsored by other shoe brands couldn’t use them in races
Athletes cant use them to compete and break records, but sure you can still use them if you want
It’s not that any individual shoe is banned. It’s just that they see a need to set a standard somewhere, anywhere really. Without a standard, runners could use stilts, prosthetics, 5 inch thick shoes, etc. eventually this becomes less of a sport about the human ability and more a competition about technology. Obviously you would need to be a world class athlete in the first place. But take a look at formula 1, an extreme example. The top three teams consistently win the races and championships. Not because they have the best drivers (debatable) but because they pour millions into researching and developing the best cars. (In racing, car development has always been part of the competition, and isn’t inherently bad (also debatable). I think most will agree that athletic competitions should be a measure based primarily on a humans physical ability.)
They could have set the rule at 40mm and 3 carbon fiber plates, but chose 40mm and 1 plate. Hence some shoes were don’t make the cut (‘‘banned’’) and some do make the cut.
Well the idea is that the carbonfiber plate provides extra energy in your step, which means you are now using mechanical advantage rather than raw human ability. Which is the spirit of competition. Everyone CAN use them but using them defeats the idea of raw talent being the cause of victory
dustin ropp it doesn’t really add any ‘extra’ energy to the system. It stores energy from the foot strike and releases it during the end of the stride. Most running shoes absorb energy into the EVA foam, but the foam doesn’t spring back until it is in the air. Energy is stored and released. Nothing ‘extra’
There are plenty of ‘normal’ shoes on the market that already do this. Mizunos, hokas, etc.
Look at them viperflys! Wow that's a beautiful sprinter shoe. Very crisp.
Olympics got postponed lol

Yeah so it's doesn't matter they don't have to feel rushed anymore ha
Nike is really good in Marketing. That was the best way to advertise their product.
Kipchoge should show everyone up by rerunning it in flip flops.
Erik Sharar no athlete will ever do that ruin feet and back
E M it was just a joke. 🙂
he'd probably win, and the whole world would say he cheated cs his flipflops had no carbon fiber in them or something
He has run marathons with broken shoes already
The shoes are fantastic in every way! I’m glad Nike is making a concerted effort to produce performance running shoes again. I feel that they lost their way for almost a decade after the Nike Free and minimialist craze. The Bowerman series was the last great line of shoes Nike made in the early and mid 2000s. I know the vapor fly line are very different but I’m reminded of the 2003 Nike Zoom Spiridon. A performance trainer that could be used as a racer! The shoe was highly engineered in my book. It was light, responsive and provided good cushioning. I’d love to see these make a comeback!
I'm definently getting some when I can afford them.
Well this was a very informative video. Pretty much answered all the questions I had about the shoe. Thanks!
plot twist: nike made the coronavirus in order to delay the olympics so their shoe can be used
Brilliant video
Youpiiii. Let new stuff come out so the other ones can become cheaper :D
The marathon record by Kipchoge is still over 2h. The run where he was under 2h was a promotional event for the shoes by Nike that didn't follow the official marathon rules.

Nike has told that Alphafly of INEOS have only ONE PLATE, its the SAME shoe to be released.
they definitely trying to cover Kipchoge, if they don't that means that human is limited lol
The forefoot Air Zoom pods are the same kind you can find in the Nike LeBron shoes (basketball).
I'm not surprised they found their way into the running shoes given the athlete like LeBron whose size/mass can attest to the durability of the cushioning strength.
So you find best runner, pay him to wear your shoes and when he breaks the record you say its because of the shoes. Of course it helps but Eliud would be best runner in Asics or Mizuno too.
Zoran Dimitrijevic i agree

Quick think on the air zoom pods, Nike has been using them in their shoes for years now. The pegs have had the pods for generations now. Exposing them doesn't change the core functionality and if having those pods in the pegs for years was cool using them in a marathon shoe really isnt that big of a deal

Adidas has had a big advantage with the boost material, but they have not come up with a rigid plate that propels the runner forward. Topo has also one shoe with a plate.
Such dumb rules. They would need to do this rule for all sport equipment across all sports to be consistent; race wheelchairs, oars, cycles, swim suits, cycle shoes, helmets etc, vault poles, rackets, gloves , guns, bows, skis, etc....
I can understand that without rules it would be an advantage to elites joined to certain sport manufacturers development programs, but the public just wants faster athletes, period.

Dude got the same shoes that Sonic the Hedgehog got.😂
The prototype Rule actually gives Nike a big advantage over their competitors.. Nike has a head start on creating/merchandising a compliant shoe, and their competitors now have a 4 month handicap before their own designs can even be used
Nothing wrong in improving shoes. Other companies are just salty because they can’t make a better shoe.
Just as within other sports such as cycling, technological advancment in apparel or equipment always courts controversy. The difficulty is, do we still run in bare feet to make a level playing field or do we alllow these kind of advancements? I think as long as every runner has access to these shoes or type of shoes and there are WAF rules and guide lines, it is fair. Whatever though, the marathon world record now is something quite incredible!
Is there any evidence the shoes help? Have seen a lot of media uncritically accepting the marketing. Is there any scientific evidence? Brilliant marketing for Nike
Kallyfudge I’ve run in the zoom fly 3. It feels like you’re running on clouds. No doubt it’s better than a standard trainer
There have been some tests that indicate that vaporflys do allow a runner to run at the same speed with less exertion. There was one by nick symmonds that wasn’t crazy scientific, because of a small sample size, but they do seem to have an effect.
try it! if you don't like them you can return with full refund.
Theres actually been several independent tests done with club and pro runners from around the world. All of them are saying there is noticeable improvement. The reports Im seeing say the club runners are getting about 2 & half min faster "marathon times", & pros about 1 & half mins faster. That's a pretty big difference.
Jay B Yup, a minute or two or even less in elite marathons is BIG.
I think that they should not be legalized for the 2020 olympics but allowed for future ones. That would give other shoe companies the time to develop their own shoes and keep the races fair for everyone.
I think now we cant say this atlete ia better than that, now it's all about the shoes. Its like F1, is Hamilton the best pilot? I dont know. He's a great pilot, of course, but also has the best car. The best pilot I really dont know.
Ronaldo Oliveira i think you can’t even compare the gear of a runner with the car of a f1 racer 🙄
Its just foam and a blade of carbon fiber.
It's not going to be an easy task for other brands to compete with Nike this year unless they hit it hard with some innovative tech.
PS: we need more podcasts on Spotify man !!
I'm just going to say running is a simple sport and we need to keep it that way!
Running barefoot isn’t what you’d like bud. This innovation in the running world is absolutely perfect for competition. Other sports have gear to aid them so we do too but with more purpose now and that’s what we need
@@kanehiro4635 That is why our sport is so great. It should be the fastest runner that wins. Not the fastest shoe that wins. They are literally adding springs. That is taking it too far
@Brennan Draper, I don’t think you see what is going on here. what’s functioning are the legs not the shoes, they’re not wheels. Good shoes or bad shoes whatever you run is what your legs and body ran;not the shoes, you can’t expect an elite athlete to be exponential just with the shoes, they are still busting their asses more than anyone in the sport and for them to be restricted with shoes because they’re too fast is retarded because that’s the point of the sport.
