Darryl might be a badass, but he's one of the most sweetest characters in the show. His childhood was brutal and his brother wasn't there for him when he needed him as a child. Children who suffer from abusive parents often just need to associate themselves with good people, people who are able to see the best in them in order to help them change and let out their true feelings and emotions. Empathy is often better than Sympathy.
StormRevolution Gaming as I recently went back to the pilot and started watching the show over , I know exactly what you’re saying . When Merle saw Daryl’s scars he looked guilty . Like he left his little brother there to get the same brutality he was given . One of the few genuine moments from Merle . As much as TWD’s writers get shitted on , one of the best things they’ve implemented aside from the comics was the Dixon family . Both new characters that have added so much to the show .

It still doesn’t really leave him though it actually stays and benefits him throughout the show on many occasions , example being one time in the woods when he was starving he hunted a squirrel , skinned it and ate it to stay alive , most people would not do any of that or know how to execute that. I know a thug wouldn’t be able. That’s straight hunting boy stuff lol
I understand that Daryl shouldn’t have punched Negan but you can tell, in this scene, Daryl would do anything to switch places with Glenn. Daryl and Glenn were bestfriends along with Rick. And Daryl broke down knowing that Maggie could’ve been mad at him
Fun fact: Andrew Lincoln wrote several emails to try and keep Glenn alive but Scott gimple denied. They said they couldn't find a way to fit Glenn with the arcs coming foward.

I think all the group members blame themselves in some way when someone dies bc they all have a family type bond. Unconditional love and what not. All are willing to do anything for each other. Daryls guilt goes way before he punched Negan in the face. Glenn tried to plead with Daryl to go back home and he wouldn't listen. He blames himself for going after the saviors on his own from the beginning which led them to be captured.
After everything they went through as a group Glenn kept them together and human. If it wasn’t for Glenn then they would’ve been apart of the Saviors or something. Glenn was truly the good guy in this messed up world
People wonder why Daryl hates Dwight so much, and I think this is a huge part of why. It was bad enough being the perceived cause Glenn's death, but the way Dwight drilled it into his head that Glenn died because of him only amplified the weight on his shoulders. This scene speaks volumes to how close Dwight got to completely breaking Daryl. It got to the point where Daryl couldn't even find it in him to speak a single word to Maggie until she pried at his grief.
