Is "Small Dog Syndrome" a thing?
"He thinks he is so tough"
"Just ignore him, he thinks he's a big dog"
"Chihuahuas, Pomeranians, etc are so mean!"
How many times have you heard or said something like this about a small dog? I'll admit, I have absolutely said things like this in the past!
Partially due to their size, small dogs often learn very quickly that reasonable attempts at setting boundaries get ignored and laughed at, causing them to escalate to larger displays of discomfort like barking, growling, and bitting.
Dogs are naturally self preserving, meaning they will do just about anything to avoid conflict. So then why are so many small dogs quick to escalate to behaviors like lunging or biting? These behaviors bring results! If boundaries are continually crossed and "warning signs" are ignored, the dog will learn that these behaviors are a waste of time and will jump straight to the more extreme displays of discomfort.
Dogs of every size deserve the ability to set boundaries and have those boundaries respected. One way you can help you dog do this is by advocating for them!
🐾 Ask people to give your dog space when needed
🐾 Help remove your dog from fearful or unsafe situations
🐾 Make your dog's boundaries clear to others
🐾 Educate others on the true reason behind the "funny" or "cute" behavior

When I talk about small dog syndrome, I'm very clear that I think of it as an owner/people-caused issue, not something intrinsic to small dogs.

Small dog syndrome reflects to people as well. I always feel very guilty if I get even siglthy pissed or angry because I’m short and I feel like the small dog syndrome

I got a Pomchi and she don’t mess with anybody or anything. But she can be feisty when somebody tries to pet her. Except for me. And she also has boundaries meeting a new dogs. She likes to meet and then walk away. Keep perusing her and she’ll snap to get her point across. She is pretty protective of me.

    Because people
    A. Buy from non-reputable breeders or shelter dogs, (which is FINE! But don’t blame the dog for behavioral issues if you buy from Brb’s or shelters.)
    B. They don’t respect the dogs boundaries. The dog has been prodded, poked and treated like a toy. Now, the only way to get people to listen to them is through aggression.
    C. They are reactive and/or have a serious mental disorder that would require medical attention.

Hello - we have a miniature dachshund who is 1 yr old and we've had her since she was 6-8 weeks old. She is spayed (not sure this could be a question). She has a tendency to start arguments with the neighbors dogs, and goes right for the fence when she's let out...to see if she can 'talk smack'. We've gotten on to her, swatted her, told her "No" many times, resorted to buying her a muzzle (yes, they make ones small enough)...she just wants to stir issues and causes one of our bigger dogs to engage in the bad behavior. She knows what she's doing isn't acceptable because when we hear her, walk outside and call her name, she stops and lowers her head. What advise can you give to help this? We opted for our fence to be built next to the neighbors with a concrete footing to prevent any of our dogs digging, so there are two fences between our property line. I've thought about buying us and the neighbor blankets for the dogs then exchanging them so each set of dogs know the others scent. I really could use help!

this is mainly an owner problem. Small dogs are not inherently more aggressive than any other breeds but they are treated like toys and often become aggressive bc of that. Or they just never receive proper training because they are easy to just yank around if they are misbehaving instead of correcting the problem. Poor breeding can also be a cause but I find it's more often the former.
