    Thank you! Excellent explanation of the various reasons my hands go numb and the nerves affected; exactly what I was looking for. I used to be able to ride 2 or 3 hours or more with minimal numbness, but now my hands are so numb after a half-hour of riding I'm afraid of losing control of the handlebars. I'll get a professional fit or a new bike at some point.

    I ride dirt bikes and it’s the one thing that can take all the fun out of riding and stop you dead in your tracks. The bad thing on a motorcycle is it’s a bad thing to raise the handlebars it gets rid of the geometry of the motorcycle and makes it unstable so I like to keep everything in the factory position. The only thing that I have found that helps is rubber mounting my handlebars taken away some of the vibration of the bike. The other thing is just ride time the more you ride the better it will get. Eventually and it’s sad to say your body will get used to it. Ride ride ride.

      Thanks for your input @sxs Marine. Pedal bicycles are a different story of course because the handling isn't tremendously compromised by placing the handlebars at a "body appropriate" height and reach. Additionally, you're not going as fast so I can understand that when a powerful engine is involved, the handlebar height can be a significant factor in handling ability. You are smart to add dampening material to your grips - because nerves don't like compression and vibration, especially over long periods.

      @@bikeandbodymke Hello Maam, this is a great video. I have a question, what is better for preventing hand numbness , riding on the hoods of a drop bar, or riser flat bars like on hybrid bikes?
      I spent months researching and deciding which bike to get, and got a trek fx3 fitness hybrid bike, but i keep getting left hand numbness post 20-30 minute rides. I 'm thinking maybe i should have gone with drop bar

    A very helpful video which has helped me identify why I get numbness and tingling in my fingers. Although I'm physically capable of riding a longer distance the discomfort in my hands has meant I've had to curtail my rides. A bit of tweaking with the saddle and changing my hand positions will hopefully sort out the problem. Best wishes from the UK.

    My left hand and wrist were always a problem. Switched from Shimano to SRAM and it is now fine. Possibly because hand was always stationary with Shimano and now it is actively used for shifting.

      George White I think that both of us have put too much pressure on the pad of our hand where our “ulner nerve” is and compressed it. That’s why it’s specifically our pinky fingers that are tingling. I’ve not seen conclusively if it fixes itself or not but I’m considering seeing someone about it in a few days if I don’t notice a difference

    If we look at road levers specifically how I fixed the issue even after having a custom made frame built for me I still got some numbness, I adjusted the levers so that the hoods were directed inward instead of straight pointed towards the front. It looks a little funny but it completely eliminated the problem. How far inward you adjust them is your call. Try it, it works.

    for me, if im just on a cruise ride say 30-40 miles at 15-17mph my hands never go numb....but if im doing a hard ride averaging 19-20 mph thats when they start going numb after about 30 minutes....my bike fit is excellent and always try to keep my hands floating on the bars but if your going full out for 20 miles and you encounter hills as well its hard to keep a light grip on the bars

    • @bikeandbodymke

      Just from your brief description, sounds like a strength issue. It could be that you lack the core strength/stability to match the power your legs are putting out. The extra push into the handlebars (creating the hand numbness) may be a compensation for this.

      There's a lot of factors that go into how low a cyclist can/should ride. Pertaining to the BODY (a few examples), if you have tighter hamstrings, difficulty bringing knees to chest or limited neck extension then you should err on the higher side for your bars 😉 (up to 45-degree trunk angle measured from the horizontal)

    I just purchased a new bike and immediately started to feel numbness on my wrists and palms, which quickly became painful and very uncomfortable. Could the geometry of the bike cause this? My previous bikes never created any pain on my wrists, which makes me skeptical that it’s my arm/ hand positioning. If so, what modifications would be recommended? The pain and numbness occurs no matter what position my hands are in…thanks for any insight 😀

    My question is how many hand position changing is "too often"? If I change hand position every five minutes I can say something is wrong? Two minutes is wrong (suppose that I feel some uncomfortable feeling)? Or if I'm moving a little bit always my fingers, my palms, my wrists is this mean something is wrong? Or is this some very personal thing? For example for me it's five minutes but for John Doe it's two hours (OK it's an extreme example). In this case can I say my settings are wrong (or is John Doe a robot? :-D )?
    Thanks.

    • @bikeandbodymke
      @bikeandbodymke  4 роки тому

      I suppose it would depend on WHY you're changing hand position so often. Is it because you're getting tender or sore at a certain part of your hand? Are you experiencing tingling or numbness somewhere and moving your hand to a different position alleviates that?

      @@bikeandbodymke Yes it's numbness on my pinky and ring finger. My first thougt was the bike is too long for me (gravel). I feel my weight is on my ulnar nerve. But you have to know I'm newbie to this gravel-thing so the dropbar is also new to me. I've been cycling for a long time by a trekking bike (with a street handlebar with bar end) so maybe I have to strengthen my core muscles (trekking is very comfy but it's interesting that the handlebar (the grip itself) is relatively lower than the saddle compared to the gravel). The distance of the grip is ~59 cm on the trekking and ~64 on gravel. I think it's not too much difference (but OK it exists). Is it possible that my problem is the width of the gravel's handlebar (46 cm compared to my ~42-43 cm shoulder)? I had to rotate inward the shifters to the more comfortable position (for my hand) but now on the drops I can barely use the break. Now there are less numbness but I have to use a little more trick when cycling on drop (by the way just holding the drop is comfy). I think about changing the handlebar to a Salsa Woodchipper because of the shallow drop and the recommended rotated-style shifters.

    • @bikeandbodymke
      @bikeandbodymke  4 роки тому +1

      @@Tralfamador75 Tough to answer without seeing you on your bike...BUT here's what I can tell you: You're getting "ulnar nerve compression" symptoms likely from improper wrist/hand position at your handlebars. And it's also possible that you have too much weight on your hands in general (should be about 70% saddle:30% hands). So how do you fix it?
      The first thing I'd do is go and see a local bike fitter. If you'd like a recommendation I'd be happy to give you one based upon where you live. There is a long list of possible issues with your fit that could be contributing to your symptoms (saddle too nose down, saddle to handlebar differential too great, handlebars and/or hoods not positioned correctly, improper saddle choice, etc.). And yes, it's possible that part of the issue is that your handlebars are too wide, but it would be best to have a professional measure your shoulders to determine what size bar is best for your gravel bike. Hope this helps - Cheers!

      @@bikeandbodymke Thanks a lot :-)
      Well bike fitter is not in game nowadays (if I know correctly the nearest is in Budapest [I'm Hungarian]). I set my saddle nose higher up - I think now it's OK. I set the hoods higher and rotated inward and now the situation is much more better. By the way the bike is Breezer Radar Expert (XXL for my 189 cm). Some guys say the size recommendation is maybe wrong. Don't know I think the frame is maybe oddly long so I bought a shorter stem (10 cm vs. 6 cm) but I think the height of the handlebar is OK (I tried a 45 degrees 10 cm stem but it was just worse). I think about handlebar size because of my wrist position at the original hood setting (hoods were straight foward) but as I rotated them the symptomes decreased instantly. Now it's not the real but so much better (but as I said the breaking and shifting on drop is a little difficult with this setting.
      So thanks again for your answer and your clear video :-)
