We've had eyes on this discovery from members of the GEC and the moon looked different for them. Turns out this phenomenon *may only occur when the parent gas giant is eclipsing its star,* causing the dark blue atmospheric hue. More investigation from any willing explorers is welcome.
@@MarkZeroGaming you're missing the point. By saying a "glimpse" I'm implying to what a full atmospheric world could look like. There are none accessible in the game. All planets with full atmospheres are non-landable. This is as close as I've ever seen and it really gives a sense of scale. I know it's asking for a lot but it's wishful thinking. Starfield will give us full atmospheric world's but with no planetary entry or exits... You just spawn onto the planet with probably a scripted landing sequence. Nevertheless, I still play Elite when I can. Will always have a special place in my heart.
What? And if you land on them, suddenly there is no water where this water is. What is so beautiful about this planet, these rocks are the same as on any other.

Just a heads up- Due to the parent planet moving out of the proper eclipse alignment, it'll be about 7.3 years until this phenomenon can happen again. Don't waste your time going to check it out.
Great observation. I went back recently and although you CAN create the effect by eclipsing the gas giant, the moon's orbit won't align to land on it in this form.
Actually it'll be about seven years (~7.3) until it can happen again because of the two possible eclipse positions and delayed data for the actual start of the eclipse (I eyeballed the degree positions for the start and end of it). (I edited the original comment to fix the number)
oh great i tried checking it out but the gas gaint wasnt eclipsing so i explored the systems around and discovered 2 planets with water as the atmosphere that gets kinda the same effect, it too has a eclipsing gas giant but not as crazy, still beautiful and very blue. PLIO AIP MW-W D1-9 1B and 1A are the planets

Awesome! Perhaps one day, always thought some of the ED ships look like they were designed with the intention of being able to fly underwater (and appropriately named) as was mentioned in the original ED manual for the Moray starboat.

GalNet going offline is what made me stop playing. I was someone who played in deep space, and GalNet really helped me roleplay in my head when jumping across the galaxy, so I might actually go back. I'm going to take them up on the free account transfer and steam copy of the game; I may be disappointed, but as long as I don't have to rebuy the basegame, I'll give it another shot.
I haven’t played or followed Elite for years but after watching this I feel like installing it again, never knew you could jump out of your ship and roam around, seems like I have a lot of catching up to do!
It's included in Odyssey expansion. There are also Stations, megaships and Fleet carriers interiers in it, as well as new on foot missions, POI's, and exobiology that has you scanning the planet's organic life.

Man this game has its moments. Which is why I still play it. I still have hope that the devs will surprise the PC community with Earth like planets and water planets landing now that they do not have to worry much about certain features being to much for the consoles to handle.
im sorry to disappoint you, but i highly doubt even a new DLC will be coming. after odyssey's updates, the game will be left behind. frontier continuously proven that they have very little to no passion for this game anymore and now that they released their newest DLC, merged horizon and released all the planned updates, this game is gonna be on life support mode

You see they`ve already basically done it by accident, now only generate a basic cloud and weather system that adjust according to different stats (planet size, moisture, heat, atmosphere) . . . have these load in when you enter the atmosphere and you`ve got fully functional atmospheres . . . can be really scarce, no worries, just give us a hand full.
What would really make the game a lot more immersive as if you could go to a planet that had a city or something or maybe a planet would have a lost civilization with ruined buildings and structures you get to explore
well there is the guardian ruins, but thats not much to explore. Like you say a whole big city ruin or abandoned city or something like that would be epic, you could go inside all the skyscrapers and look at everything

I just flew on this planet but the atmosphere isn't as dense as it's shown in the video. I don't know if it's just my pc or that I'm running lowest graphics for most fps, or if it's been patched. I'll try to get some more shots from the darker side of the planet. But I don't have much faith in it
Edit: I've read some info about this planet from the link in the videos description and it says that the effect can be seen during the eclipse caused by the gas giant nearby and I just wasn't lucky enough to arrive here during the eclipse. I'll wait here and I will take some cool photos. Thanks anyway. o7
They need to just make a sequel and focus on the physics engine. I want heat shields and incremental damage from entering thick atmospheres that needs be repaired, lest your ship gets torn apart on entry >.
I guess it's dust, combined with the atmosphere. In Horizons there were some really really dusty planets who almost looked like the regular atmospheric ones in Odyssey. Although I thought that it was stupid, since there was no atmosphere, therefore can't be wind, so it can't be dust. But it was a cool effect nonetheless. Well, a reentry in no atmosphere is stupid also I guess lol. This planet looks great, and it proves what I said about venus-like planets: Frontier should implement those kind of thick atmospheres. They don't need to add biodiversity, or water, and even the fog would be a great trick to mask the popping.

If they fixed the mountian and canyon generation to how it was in horizons the planets would look so much better the mountians just look uncanny and it really destroys any appeal that a world like this has.
Nah its more realistic now, that is the fix. I prefer realism. More funky mountains and canyons should appear in pagers with active erosion eg weather systems

Yeah, this world does it for me. I think I have to pay it a visit. One thing that bothered me is that your brain doesn't work the same as mine. One of the first things I do on any planet is take in the sky. Especially when there is such a tantalising planet in it with the sun right behind it. You never once directly looked up at the sky, you kept all the attention down on the ground, any shots of the sky were accidental. I was really hoping for a good long shot up! I wonder what makes our brains work different in this way.
This video is heavily focused on the landing aspect and the atmosphere covering the world as a whole, while wanting to land to see the special Fumerola on the surface. I agree with you 100% I should have got more shots flying through the sky at high altitude, and this tip will be reflected in future landing videos. I remember being extremely shocked by the appearance and filming this in wonder, so my brain was certainly not working like it should :) Enjoy your visit, send me some shots o7

Had a extremely thick ammonia world, it in fact had its parent gas giant eclipsing the star.

You can't fly underwater, just swim or drift, but the idea of using the spaceships as submarines would be awesome.
The ships can function in Vacuum. They damn well should be able to handle water pressures

What I’m really looking for is a good Odyssey home base; an atmospheric landable planet with a port that isn’t on the permanently dark side of a tidally locked planet. And in a system with a few landable atmospheric planets with settlements . Best I’ve found so far is Baylis Reach on Li Chul B2.

Does some planet have life? Animal or whatever? It looks to me whatever you go is barren and rocky. First time I see videos of it with actual water.
Hi , more of a question . If it's a Water World then why does it say Rocky Body in the nav ??
It's not a WW. Water World "Like", so it looks and feels like landing on one, but the body is rocky with a sulphur dioxide atmo.
