  • I've just come back from America where I was invited to a small Warhammer event in a HUGE corporate castle retreat.
I had my first game of Age of Sigmar, went on a magical quest and also had a lot of feelings about Warhammer, anxiety, friendship and how to fit in ...
This video gets a little feelsy but I think it was really important to make, so thank you to the whole Tough Crowd for helping me show everyone just how great you all are :)

Just imagine how many people you have helped by doing so (if it helps 1 person or 100 people) it starts them on too a healing path that could have been too scary to begin prior to witnessing your own bravery. I can empathise so deeply that that fear of actually playing warhamner. I have Dyslexia, and mild Dyscalculia, which pair very nicely with my general anxiety and ASD to make the idea of playing even a casual pick-up game intimidating.
Thankfully, in my experience ours is a lovely community, more than willing to tolerate me struggling to count my dice or recall rules immediately if I explain the reasons.
Also, i do things like pre-sort my dice in to different coloured blocks of 10 and make cheat sheets with which strats apply to which units etc.
Also, totally get having to have give yourself a job to cope in a social situation as someone who immediately looks for tables to move or mugs to wash up 😅

She found it amazing to hear someone describing dyscalculia in such a similar way to how they experience it, and then going one step further to describe the difficulties in playing games and yet doing it anyway. This representation really matters.
It made them do a (happy) cry. Because crying is cool.

Hi Rogue Hobbies, I recently discovered your channel. I didn’t know what to expect when I started watching this video but I am glad I watched it. I have always dealt with anxiety that stops me from enjoying what I love the most (miniature wargaming). I have had my fair share of terrible opponents that really hurt my self esteem and that made me quit certain games. Even to this day I have reservations playing new people but I am slowly coming out of my shell especially with the new miniature community I take part in (I play Malifaux) I feel like the best thing we can do for a hobby and a community no matter what game you play is just to be friendly and welcoming. We all deal with our own stuff and usually find miniature gaming as our safe space or what we do to relax.
It is a great feeling once you becoming part of a group especially with a group of people you share something in common with :)

I really struggle hanging out with nerds. I went to my first gaming event in over 20 years a few months ago; it was for a very small, home brew undead themed game hosted in a very atmospheric church. I really didn’t fit in. Everyone was SUPER nice and I had a lovely time, but I couldn’t relate to a lot of the conversations. I know nothing about modern GW products, 40k lore or Star Wars. The gaming community is super inclusive, but I still felt like an imposter.
I was hoping because of the niche Undead theme of the game to meet a bunch of freaks obsessed with horror films and metal, but I was the only weirdo there. I was kinda shocked & grossed out that multiple people gave me their non-business cards with their social media handles on and they, in-turn, were even more shocked when I confessed I don’t use social media. There was a lot of talk about the next KS game they were waiting for, complex rules interactions, pile-of-shame-bragging, warband-maxing, patreon accounts and airbrush setups and not enough about the stench of extremely rotten flesh or the riddle of steel. I didn't want to be a party pooper and point out that all of those things make me want to vomit mucus, so I nodded along and hoped that I could one day be as enthusiastic as these nice humans.
I had a nice time, but when I got home I watched the latest GX1000 edit that had just been released and I felt super deflated. I realised I could have gotten rad or gone skab collecting that day instead of trying to be a real nerd.
I think about the hobby a lot, but then I’ll stumble over a youtube video every now and then and it hammers home how much of a weirdo I am that I’ll never be able to be a nerd. I’ve really tried to go out and meet people locally at groups and shops, organise the sort of games I want to play (i.e. Cave Evil, Mordheim, Brawl Arcane) but have gotten nowhere. It’s especially frustrating as I only live about 45mins drive from Nottingham, arguably the mecca of miniature-wargaming and I still can’t find a bunch of moshers to roll dice and pretend to be evil with. It sucks. I have given up the hope of ever eating cave potatoes whilst listening to Impetigo and playing a Snotling Pumpwagon reskin of Gaslands with other heathens.
I really, really, really hope those badass Bolt Thrower sweatpants helps infects unsuspecting and unfamiliar gamers! Doing the Chaos God’s work because I cannot.

Crying in the Frank frazetta museum is not only normal, but the ultimate response for the feelings the power of art should be able to invoke on us. I know I cried my eyes out when I went to the Star Wars costume exhibition in Saint Pete, FL. Me, by myself, a 35 year old 6’ 2” long haired, bearded, construction worker standing in a room full of people looking at me cleaning my eye and nose waterfalls with tissues a kind lady had given me out of her purse. the thing I love about this hobby is overwhelmingly, people are just so excited to share what they love with people and want them to feel included. The fact that someone who's been such a cornerstone in the Warhammer world for a long time was loved for doing her own thing and starting this channel and subsequently was invited to hang out at a tournament across an ocean and was made to feel like one of the gang is really just what makes everything so special to me.
I am low-key envious I don't know the kinds of people that would let me hang out in a giant castle-themed mansion in the middle of the woods.

Its always so nice to see people doing things like this, its rare i can find people in my area whos into things like this and travel is kinda hard at the moment. Its also so heart warming to see people welcome someone in with open arms, far to often ive seen group around here refuse or deny people for no reason *ive left a few groups that have done that to others*. Cant wait to get some more mushroom painting tutorials ^.-, Thanks for the great video

You might of gotten overwhelmed, emotionally, socially, visually, ect. Or a mix of a few of them. This will tip you into our fight or flight nervous system, by taking yourself out for a walk it gives you the chance to escape the information overload and click back onto the vagus nerve and our rest and digest system. You have good instincts when it comes to taking care of your cranium, so trust them! Great video and ,please! More videos with you and Rob, you guys are 100% adorable ❤

One of your best vids! (Getting into 40K after 20 years) I have a painted Sororitas Army I've worked on for over a year, but after going to the store and listening to how people play, with numbers this, and numbers that and +3 to whatever by whatever... I have to say it's intimidating now. I am discouraged to play. So I'm glad to know it happen to a lot of others too. But maybe Sigmar is the next Army I paint and go in with that.

Don't worry about it man. Everyone started out feeling like that. The main thing is that you need to find good people to play it with. Maybe ask at your local game store during a time where not much is happening. There are dummies every once in a while, but for your first few games you won't play in a tournament or something, so it's all gonna be fine.

Troggoths are such fun models! You probably do not need the encouragement, but the troggoths are really easy to convert and combine with other trolls like the Blood Bowl troll. It's well possible to make two headed trolls from the box and a bit of greenstuff and love.

Thankyou for sharing this epic vlog. I've found that it's been tough to get friends back out together socially after lockdown let alone with all the hurdles that adult life throws out there. I've got some very dear friends who gather twice a year for a big weekend of wargaming at a luxury lodge in Wales (not quite the scale of that amazing castle). The social side feels more important than the gaming and twice a year doesn't feel enough.
But sharing those moments together mean a lot when months and years tick by so fast.
Great vid. Looking forward to a month of mushrooms and barnacles!

As someone with crippling anxiety, I can empathise with how you felt, and your honesty is refreshing. And whilst I can’t offer any advice on how to conquer it, I can promise you that you are quite possibly the MOST likeable and cheerful person amongst the warhammer/miniature painting content creators on the planet! Just being yourself means that it’s almost impossible not to like you, you don’t need to try. Keep being your infectious, funny, self. The hobby needs people like you 😃

Hey Lousie great video, I dont play just paint and I fell into the warhammer rabbit hole by chance, a friend gave me a model kit to help me deal with my depression and self harming from there another guy I know after I mentioned and showed him my first aircraft gave me a goblin to paint as something different. From there I found warhammer and now I've built and painted stormcast Eternals, Orks, space marines and nighthaunt guards and its four years now I'm still painting warhammer, just started a box of battle sisters and poxwarlkers and fighting the urge to buy a box of ork kill team the price is calling. What I'm trying to say is this hobby is a life saver, my paint collection is crazy lol never thought I'd be this far into this at my age 56 after just 4 years, keep doing you and thanks for the videos to watch and follow you ( not stalking 😅😅 I'm in Scotland so we're both safe 😅😅) great to see you had fun.
