I used a random bit of angled metal, which I think came off the lock on my garage door! But you could stick a block of wood on top of the panel surround and lean the keyboard against it. The panel has a bit of a lip to retain the bottom edge of the keyboard. I had a narrow strip of foam stuck along the lip to make it more secure. I think this was self-adhesive foam I had from Maplin, designed for PC case sound insulation. Short version: bodge it with whatever you can find :)
Very nice tutorial. I also haven't been using the FS9/FSX GPS to its full potential. Now I mapped my laptop's numpad keys to the GPS (using the GPS 500 so had to create my own scheme) and will delve into how to use the Garmin device. Thanks!
To set the functions you need to go to the FSX controls screen, select button/keys and select 'G1000 and GPS' (or whatever it's called) to filter the list. I have the up and down buttons mapped to the 'increase/decrease group' functions, and left/right to 'increase/decrease page'. Hope that helps.
Zippy from Maplin. Nice keyboard but a little pricey. The main compromise is the way NUM LOCK works. With NUM LOCK on, you can't type normally as some keys do the NUM pad functions. Thanks for the comments!
love your ideas. and always looking out for new stuff from you. brilliant stuff would like to know were you purchased that nippy little keyboard that sits on your saitek panel.
That looks like a fantastic idea. I don't have Photoshop, could you please let me have the JPG. Just got to make this work. My Num pad is allready on order. Thanks for sharing.
I can't say yes or no. It will work with any addon that uses the standard FSX key mappings. My epxerience tells me that custom GPS implementations (or custom anything) do not always allow their functions to be mapped to keys, so I would be pessimistic.
Nice work - Being a bit dense - but how is the nurmeric keypad connected to the PC? - Is it just added to another USB along with the normal keyboard ? - Many thanks - Pete
Yes, I have it as a Photoshop 7 file and fully customisable if you can use that. Otherwise I can flattern it to JPG but it likely won't match your keypad exactly. Email me if you want it (markh and my YT username will find me :)
Funny you should say that, but I just ordered a Mimo 7" USB touch-screen to run the GPS on. The Mimo drivers now support DirectX so will work (I am told) with FSX panels! Not sure how well it will work with the 500's knobs (or the GNS530 in the Carenado Skymaster, which has two knobs), but it should be better than no touch-screen at all!
I think the problem is that the 'clear' button action can't be fully implemented with keystrokes. Or maybe you can make the 'on repeat' action do something different. I can't remember the details, sorry.
I know this is an old post, but I'm just seeing it for the first time, so I hope you're still around to answer my question. How were you able to assign the GPS only to a separate monitor? That's such a great idea!
This is the 2D pop-up GPS. If you're in full-screen mode you just drag it to another monitor and resize it to fit. In Windowed mode you need to right-click on the pop-up and select 'undock' before doing the same thing. There's some stuff in the Learning Centre about using multiple screens with FSX.
Wow. much simpler than I thought. I have Air Display 2, so that would make it a snap. Thank you so much for your blazingly fast response. You're the man!!!!
Hi, sorry I didn't get the email. I'm finding it hard to email you, they get returned saying the mail was sent to no reply. I'm v.sorry if I'm becoming a pain. Mark
For some reason my separate numeric pad won't allow me to assign Page group up and down to keys 2 and 8 like the way you have. When I assign these two keys to page group up and down they mess up the other control. Any idea why thay could be?

You sir are my hero. This is definitely my next project
Ha, good to know! But better now to go the whole hog and check out my GPS+ control panel :)
That looks like a fantastic idea. I don't have Photoshop, could you please let me have the JPG. Just got to make this work. My Num pad is allready on order.

Where did you get the decals for the GPS ?

how do you mount the zippy keyboard on your saitek panel. can you help.thanks

Good bit of kit
how did you loose the buttons on the gps screen and just display the map,so you could use the keypad
cheers
Hi, you just make the window bigger than the screen so it chops the buttons off!
Are you able to share your template for the button labels?
What could be nice, would be the GPS GARMIN 500 on a Ipad. Fingertouch and all good.

They're just printed out and glued on!
Thank you. I see that you have 'clear key' on the keypad, does that work because you say in the video that the 'clear' key didnt work.

Almost Aviation thanks.
Does it work with the Reality XP versions?
Great idea well done!
how do use go up down on the gps keypad
how to you slew the aircraft ?
Me, I turn off NUM LOCK and use the numeric pad on my main keyboard. But you can map the slew controls to other keys or to your joystick.
Excellent.
very nice!
you fsx knowledge is going alien tech. Jeez!
How did you know all this?!
Just a lot of fiddling around, I suppose. The down side is I spend more time tinkering than flying!
Very nice indeed. Thanks for that :D

From memory I think I found different numeric keypads behaved differently. So all I can suggest is to try another one :(
@@AlmostAviation ok, thanks.
YES!
