There was a state mental hospital in Marlboro, NJ and it housed mentally ill people, alcoholics and probably vets too with PTSD and then it was torn down I think in the 1960's or 70's and all the graves are there similar to what you've shown, not even cared for with mowing. Very sad. RIP to all.
This is so sad. It is nice that the veteran associations cared and looked up the veterans who are buried here. And so sad they had relatives who didn’t care. May they rest in Heaven and thank you to the veterans for their service. A very interesting video. I enjoy them all.

My grandmother once told me that she had suffered from depression all her life, she died in 1984. As someone who also suggested suffers from it, family history, I’ve often thought how horrible it must have been to go through that alone, knowing that if anyone found out, she would have been thrown into an asylum and forgotten about. And my grandfather probably would have done it if he had known.
There is more than the shame factor involved. Schizophrenia is hard to deal with; depression. Violent behavior. All of these can be hard to deal with even today for untrained families. And people lose their families and have no one to support them. It was more compassionate than leaving them to roam free. See what we have now in certain states. Food deprivation, self medication, filthy environment, danger to the rest of the community. Yes, abuse can be an issue. Better to have regular supervision than leave those who cannot adequately care for themselves unhoused.

And local included the weather and sports. Sadly, family love and loyalty, depended on a healthy child and adult. Imperfections where not acceptable. These stories are heartbreaking.

Over the hill from my house was Woodville State Hospital. It was also a large, self-sustaining facility. They had cows, fruit trees, and corn. When Regan was in office they closed the doors. There are hundreds of markers in the woods from the patients who died. You can see the rows of markers in the winter when it snows. 😔😔😔
Unfortunately, these cemeteries are far too common in some prisons and asylums. It doesn’t make any less sad though. I hope all are resting peacefully.
I know of a very small cemetery near where my mother was raised. It is out in the woods and is entirely grown over by the woods. It contains headstones and some footsteps including one that belongs to my great great Grandmother Johnson. Tge first time I visited her headstone was broken off. I took what I could of it home and cleaned it then went back with some liquid epoxy and put it back together. I wish I owned the property. I'd love to cut out the trees, grind out the stumps, level the ground a take all the markers, clean and set them back at the site with some nice flowering bulbs and shrubs or bushes. There are only about 12 to 15 buried there but I know some are my ancestors.

So very Heartbreaking..just a number. many women were sent to asylum for what is now known as menopause and also Postpartum depression .Veterans with PTSD , Individuals with Epilepsy or tremors, nervousness ect ..Rest in Peace each and everyone of you ! It’s “ love locks”, it’s done to represent a couples commitment to each other. Too many locks can weaken the bridge structure. It was made famous by a bridge in Paris.
There's several places here that are just numbers. The old poor farm in Bloomington Illinois but on private property, on old rt. 66 a poor farm cemetery with numbers but at last a huge stone with the names that are buried there bit no idea where in the numbers they are. Also in Bentown cemetery a section with numbers but no one could tell me why. Loved this and all your videos. Have seen every one of them. Would love to join the club of yours but when I tried it was by Google account which I don't use, use Yahoo. So I couldn't figure it out. Kevin

Well…. lol. The first time I ever went through it, I was uneasy. It was an eerie feeling. I didn’t have that this time, but I think it’s because the filming distracted me.
I had an Aunt that was in the Columbus Ohio Institution for the Insane. My Grandfather put her there when she was in her teens. Sad part she wasn't insane but had Epilepsy. She would be very Violent, my Grandmother couldn't handle her. She was treated very well there, having her own room, bath etc. Grandpa made sure she had the best. Her favorite thing was feeding the squirrels. While outside one day feeding them she fell and hit her head causing her death. She is buried with my Grandparents. This is so sad..
Even today i am thankful that yhe country is really trying to make mental.illness a front page issue and trying to change the stigma and pour out help and resources. I have mental illness,manic depression and anxiety. My mother had it her mother had it my aunts had it and on and on.i'm 71 and have had a great doctor for 50 years take meds but i still have days and weeks i battle it all pretty bad. What was done back.in the days of asylums was beyond tragic and horrible but the fsmilies and medical had no idea what they were dealing with. But no excuse whatsoever . Each person was a human soul and deserved to be treated with kindness and dignity. I can't imagine the hell each precious soul went through.😥😪😥😪😥😪
The graves were numbered to keep the privacy of the person buried there. There were lists of names and numbers somewhere in time. It is not as heartless as you suggest.
I don’t think they were concerned about privacy in the 1870s. I respect your take on it, but I don’t agree. According to the Ridges cemetery project, the numbering of the graves was for bureaucratic convenience. Which to me, amounts to they just didn’t care enough to mark them.

My great grandmother was put in a mental asylum in the 1940s after she saw a bomb drop on her husband who was on the other side of the road Her mind stopped on that day and she died in 1963 I live in the U.K. btw

Would the separate section down the stairs be the women’s cemetery and the main part the mens's? Both graves in the lower part were women.
