I personally think that 6:40 until the part where Cougar lands is a great scene because the background music really gets the mood of how scared he feels after the enemy aircraft had screwed him up. Especially the scene where it cuts to a photo of his wife and child and back at him, it shows what he’s fighting for and what he’s sacrificing

My late father was an F-4 pilot and flew 210 missions over Vietnam. I once asked him if he ever had an interest in landing on a carrier. He replied, “Oh hell no!"
My cousin flew these. He said landing on a carrier at night with rain and violent crosswinds .. there's nothing more difficult and intense. Probably biggest difference between air force and navy. But a lot of navy pilots don't have softest touch landing on airfields. I find they hard to believe.
I really enjoyed the sequel but only because the aerial cinematography is so immersive. For tension and character building the first is in a league of it's own. Tony Scott achieved a level of drama and era defining coolness with his shooting and editing signature that no amount of cockpit mounted scenes can replicate. Top Gun is a stone cold classic.
Word. Every character in Top Gun is original and colourful. Even Tom Cruise at 24 seemed much more alive in this film. The sequel is just more hollywood cookie cutter characters and a dull script with no fire and no memorable moments. Top Gun the original has all of that and more.
This video brought back a lot of memories that I had forgotten. I served aboard two aircraft carriers. The USS Kittyhawk and The USS Eisenhower back in the 80's.
The F-14 is, to this day one of the sexiest aircraft to ever grace the skies. The F-5'S used as 'migs' looked the sinister part....But I will NEVER get sick of seeing a F-14 in any configuration.
The F-14 is dope, but just me personally I've grown to love our new F-35s. :) I'd love to fly one if I do end up joining the AF which I'm strongly considering.
@@justalpha9138 I've always liked the way the newer generations of aircraft like the F-22 and F-35 fly. The maneuvers they can pull off are jaw dropping. I'm just more partial to the designs of the F-14,15, and 18 (16's for some reason never quite did it for me). Probably just because I grew up around them. As for your consideration of joining the AF....well I'd say go for it. I'm a Navy Brat myself which probably helps explain why I tend to like their aircraft more. But I say that if you have the desire to serve, and the dream to fly...Well then the AF would be a great fit. Regardless, you should follow your dreams, whatever they may be. Best of luck to you.
@@michaelbeelby1995 I wouldn't join the Navy because that just wouldn't be the life I would want. I also wouldn't join the Marines or the Army either because while I could become a soldier, it's not what I want, nor would I be an asset. I would be a detriment and I know it. If I can, I'll do my best to get an F-35 slot because I really love that thing, and for some reason it calls to me loudly. It might be something that I should try to do. :)
@@justalpha9138 Well....I'm rooting for you if you go for it. Keep your grades up, try to earn a spot at the academy, keep your nose clean, and in the meantime learn all you can about flight theory and associated topics. Your local Civil Air Patrol might be worth joining as they might be able to give you a leg up on a lot of it. They'd at least present the opportunity to fly. There is no freer feeling in the world. An AF recruiter would also be able to point you in the direction of resources and the types of things they look for. Again.....Best of luck....Lord knows we need not just qualified, but committed men and women to serve in all branches. I truly hope you get to live your dream.
This film is seriously like 30 years ahead of it’s time…..the way it’s shot..the cinematography……the substance…..the vivid high definition…..the insane sounds!……..the score is perfect!……even their haircuts……no feathered Luke Skywalker or Karate Kid styles…..little things like that….. it’s so NOT 80’s!………
Let's not forget to give credit to the great Art Scholl, the stunt pilot who filmed a lot of the aerobatic footage for the movie. He died during filming when he failed to recover from a spin and crashed into the Pacific.
I think the haircut are military standards, not much choice. I'm San diego, they said it's easy to spot who's in the military by their 💇♀️ haircut 💇♂️
Mid 80s, cold war was at the highest level and i am sure The USSR would love to rent out their latest fighter/interceptor to hollywood for a legendary movie!
@@m64h partly true, MiGs had model numbers but they were always odd numbers, the fact that they’re called MiG-28s is a dead giveaway as to what they are
They actually *did that* in the real Top Gun... they ran the F-5 as a replacement for the MiG-21. 'course, they "somehow" got a _real_ MiG-21 or two as well... the whole idea was that the training unit _never knew_ what they were gonna face this time.
3:04 I never noticed this, but it's a great establishing character moment. Not two seconds after Maverick hears there is only one MiG, he immediately wants to merge with the guy and he tells Cougar as much - but the uncertainty in his voice suggests he wants a second opinion from a cooler-headed pilot, which Cougar provides. *"Take it easy, Maverick...."*
@WhyAmIWearing ARedShirt You'r surely right, but we must have in head that it's a movie... Many thing are not as the real thing... And it's why it's so cool...
it was unintentionally a character-defining moment, but i see your point. Maverick is headstrong, but not reckless. I hear the pause in his delivery as he defers to Cougar.. (who the Skipper later says "was" Number One. Interesting point-out! I don't like the fact this video is misleadingly titled the "First 10 minutes".. more like "The Next 10 minutes After the first 3 minutes"

@@dianadurbin8714 You do realise that the RAF fighter squadrons were doing DAC on a weekly basis for 30+ years, right? They didn't *need* a FWS. They never forgot how to do it.
Goose's comment outside Viper's office asking Maverick if he still had the number for that truck driver's school .... Truck Masters .... STILL cracks me up 30+ years later and probably 50x viewings.
Saw Top Gun Maverick and must say I prefer the original. It was great, but no character back story, John Hams character was over the top 'mean' and illogical, no real backstories to get the viewer to relate more to the characters. Maverick does from conquering superhero to retired dad mom and we really have no idea where she came from or their history together.
Just saw the Top Gun 2: Maverick in cinema...It was a brilliant movie, the plot, acting and cinematography was superb. The link with the previous part /characters and storyline was too good. Must watch at least once..
this is perhaps the best cinematic 10 minutes in movie history. I have a renewed respect for all of the working parts in our military. The United States military is a finely tuned & well oiled war machine
Think about trying to put an airplane on a carrier. Now, think about trying to it at night. Now, think about trying to do it in a storm, with the flight deck moving all over the place. Without a doubt, navy pilots are the absolute best in the world.
@@sap1345 It isn't. The actors weren't authorised to fly the aircraft, especially considering the training requirements they wouldn't meet. Tom Cruise can fly fast jets (see the video with James Corden) but the only plane he actually pilots in either Top Gun is the P-51 at the end of Maverick.
The quiet buildup of aircraft moving into position, pre-dawn scenes over the flight deck are very important to _really_ get into the effect of “Highway to the danger zone...”
Some of these scenes were filmed on the USS Ranger CVA-61, my former ship. (1974-1978) I really enjoyed watching the scenes in CIC and on the Bridge because I was a radarman.
My husband's last wish was to go see the movie, The Veterans arranged for him and the family to go see the movie, On the day of the event, he was taken to hospital where he died 3 days later, He was Airforce Vietnam Veteran.. RIP
@@zempire9633 firing off defensive flares doesn’t require Command’s approval. Cougar could fire off a million flares but nothing would have saved him had that MiG fired.
No -- its when Cougar rips off his face mask 😆 You're hyperventilating with (most likely) 100% O2 and a pressurized delivery system. Solution? Rip off your mask and breathe low pressure/low oxygen air! Brilliant!!
@@mlaprarie you know hyperventilation gets worse you have too much oxygen in your system right? The solution to fix hyperventilating there would be to reduce your oxygen and try to get more carbon dioxide in your lungs.
Yep, it is a love letter to the first movie and fans. So much respect to the original. And thats how a sequel should be. Plus newcomer that never watch Top Gun before will still love the 2nd movie.
As a 19 year old US Marine Station aboard the nuclear aircraft carrier USS Enterprise CVA (N) 65 during the Vietnam War; I get a thrill watching this movie. I seen so many different types of aircraft launched and recovered on the Big E day and night. They even went up against Russian Bear (bombers) flying overhead trying to harass us. At 22, I saw many fighters come in tree top level and bomb enemy targets. I would buy a fighter pilot a drink in a heart beat!
My ship, USS Galveston CLG-3, operated with your ship in Vietnam sometimes, other times we monitored Hanoi airport and did shore bomb supporting ROK (Republic of Korea) marines, who were on our side. I was a radarman in CIC like in the film with radar screens all around. We had Marines on our ship, one time they took care of swimmers trying to attach explosives to our hull when we were anchored out in Da Nang. We loved our Jarheads.
0:35 so much thought and seriousness involved in these aircraft carriers like the pilots critiquing other pilots landings. And in military in general. Such an impressive creation and evolvement.
For those that are interested in Top Gun you need to read Dan Peterson’s book “Top Gun”. He is the founder of the school and it is an amazing book. This movie is glam compared to what it was really like. The book is exciting to read about his life in the cockpit

I thought the scene w/ Merlin cracking under the stress was one of the most tense scene's I've ever seen, Faltermeyer's track in the background really puts the tension to an 11, Scott's filming techniques in this scene really makes you feel like YOU are following the glide path in, very nerve racking stuff, give you a taste of what these guys actually have to overcome to get back to their families.
Say what you will about the story or acting, but the footage of the jets and the pace of the editing are incredible. They should have won the Oscars for Best Editing and Best Sound.

I have watched this movie more times than I can count, yet I have never noticed the "camera" mounted on the right wing at 4:26. Its a very quick view of the F-14 in a tight right turn. I worked on these planes in the 90's at NAS Norfolk depot level maintenance and some of the planes they used in the movie came in and you can see the mounting holes they used for the cameras. Love the “MiGs”. What’s funny is that when I first watched this movie when I was five, I turned to my dad (F-15c pilot) and said “Dad, those aren’t MiGs! Those are T-38s! They got it wrong.”
My Dad was a pilot instructor in the 90s and so it was a bit of an "immersion breaker" to look over and see a model of the big bad "Mig 28" emblazoned in the USAF regalia (as its real T-38/F-5 form). 😄
Iceman: "And what was happening with Cougar while you were 'showboating' with this Mig?" Maverick: "Didn't you read the after action report? The Mig I was 'Communicating' with was Cougar's Mig."
The first time I saw this movie I was on a PanAm 747 from Argentina to Miami and going through some turbulence. Added a whole new dimension to the picture…

I cant believe how incredible this movie is. It didnt get the promotion then that they do now. That was an incredible time as well. 80's forever.
The Tomcats are a thing of beauty
SO glad they did a similar intro in Top Gun Maverick, I was sat there like a giddy kid just grinning and tapping my foot in my seat!
Haha same, I had goosebumps when the top gun theme started
What a classic. Made young boys and girls for that matter want to fly! Whenever I put on my CPAP mask, my wife says "Talk to me Goose!" LOL.
The director said he wanted the pilots to look like J Crew models, looks, hair styling etc.
Let's not forget to give credit to the great Art Scholl, the stunt pilot who filmed a lot of the aerobatic footage for the movie. He died during filming when he failed to recover from a spin and crashed into the Pacific.
👍
Don't forget the way they speak. I mean, they don't talk like old people or 80'sh
I think the haircut are military standards, not much choice. I'm San diego, they said it's easy to spot who's in the military by their 💇♀️ haircut 💇♂️
Put a red star on an F-5, and it's a Mig. Ah, the 80s!
Not just that -- a MiG-28 . . . the Russians never gave MiGs even model numbers
People still actually think they're MIGs
0:42 This kick move guy has always stuck in my head since first time I saw this movie, and I have seen more than 5-6 times on TV and such. He cool AF 😂

I always crack up when Cougar says "Do I have permission to fire?" At what!? He's behind you son! 😂
30 plus years on, I still love this movie!
Like Tom Cruise, this movie never gets old
3:04 I never noticed this, but it's a great establishing character moment.
@WhyAmIWearing ARedShirt The fantasy Migs had stealth... Lol.
@WhyAmIWearing ARedShirt True, but Tomcats often didn't carry Phoenix's, and in this case they weren't even sure if the radar contacts were hostile.
You’re reading too much into it
it was unintentionally a character-defining moment, but i see your point.
As a young lad my youngest was in awe of this..he wanted to be a pilot.he joined the world's greatest..royal air force ..flight lieutenant.well done kidder

I know the answer, but do you know what branch Maverick is in?
2:28 fighter jet flying formations just looks awesome in itself
Nothing beats the classics. The best of 80s.
Think about trying to put an airplane on a carrier. Now, think about trying to it at night. Now, think about trying to do it in a storm, with the flight deck moving all over the place. Without a doubt, navy pilots are the absolute best in the world.
A STORM...HOW ABOUT A FRIGGIN SNOW STORM

I appreciate talented actors like Tom Cruise who are skilled to fly on anything from fight jet to a helicopter. This guy is awesome.

@@Rockwood19 it’s not but after this movie he became an experienced pilot and has his own P51
@@Rockwood19 yes it is 🥱

Best part Cougar is in a defensive position with a radar lock on him”do I have permission to fire?”
Maybe he's talking about the flares
@@zempire9633 firing off defensive flares doesn’t require Command’s approval. Cougar could fire off a million flares but nothing would have saved him had that MiG fired.
He probably means can he engage and try to get offensive and fire
No -- its when Cougar rips off his face mask 😆 You're hyperventilating with (most likely) 100% O2 and a pressurized delivery system. Solution? Rip off your mask and breathe low pressure/low oxygen air! Brilliant!!
@@mlaprarie you know hyperventilation gets worse you have too much oxygen in your system right? The solution to fix hyperventilating there would be to reduce your oxygen and try to get more carbon dioxide in your lungs.

Thank you for your service !

Love the “MiGs”. What’s funny is that when I first watched this movie when I was five, I turned to my dad (F-15c pilot) and said “Dad, those aren’t MiGs! Those are T-38s! They got it wrong.”
Had exactly the same situation when I watched Iron Eagle and and saw those Kfirs depicted as Mig23s! Mind you, my father was a An-26 flight engineer.
My Dad was a pilot instructor in the 90s and so it was a bit of an "immersion breaker" to look over and see a model of the big bad "Mig 28" emblazoned in the USAF regalia (as its real T-38/F-5 form). 😄
18 years later I was United States Marine and yes.. I had a CD top gun soundtrack in my portable speaker !!
Iceman: "And what was happening with Cougar while you were 'showboating' with this Mig?"
Maverick: "Didn't you read the after action report? The Mig I was 'Communicating' with was Cougar's Mig."
