    let's be clear: factory locking replacement parts to a particular phone is anti-competitive. forcing repair shops to have to order inventory each time or to not be able to carry inventory at all is not a side effect It is the primary reason for the policy. The policy is in place to make it so that only Apple repair shops can competitively repair their devices in a timely manner.

      the pairing of new parts s/n to old parts s/n (marked as replacement) is incredibly control freak in nature. they're adding unnecessary complications and failure points to what should be a very simple process, just so they can keep an eye on the parts circulation. a lot can happen for a customer to be unfairly deemed illegible for repair. a malicious 3rd party repair, or even a repair savvy relative switching out parts for unauthorized one, or the text itself on the component might not be visible anymore because the component is wrecked from severe puncture, a bug on their database, or if they pull support in the future. i mean these things should not be under supervision from a mere manufacturer, if anything their job is to advise, not control.

      It may be true that the true purpose of the policy is disingenuous and/or subversive, but an argument can be made in support of Apple’s position here. They are the “manufacturer,” yes, but much more importantly, they’re the “designer.” Keeping extreme quality control over your OEM design is important. And the fact their technology has been replicated so many times with such effort toward “looking” legit, but such poor true quality control (I.e. ‘airpod pros’ you find all over Facebook), lends credence to an argument that ‘if we’re going to back our product, as designed AND manufactured, we’re going to demand part swaps are either authentic or unknown.’ That seems reasonable to me. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Them making their equipment public for a reasonable price is easily the biggest advantage of this program.
    Some makerspaces and the student space at my university already announced that they are going to buy these tools as soon as they are available.
    So people can just buy the parts, go to these spaces and use the equipment for free!

      we use these tools, if you're speaking of the display press and "Heated Display Removal Fixture". They really are overpriced as hell. Get the Display Adhesive Press Plate for the required models and apply light force to it after applying the adhesive, that's all what the 200$ display press does. The Display Removal machine can be replaced easily with a heat mat (which is needed for all iPhone and Android phones anyway) and an iSlack. I usually just skip the machine and pry out the display since it takes ages. Just a wise recommendation from an IRP technician!

      @@PvtAnonymous I'd agree with you, but do these help "idiot proof" at all by making it simpler for people without the technical experience that you have? • @PvtAnonymous
      @PvtAnonymous 2 роки тому

      @@Clove_Parma yeah, these tools won‘t help at all if you have no idea what you‘re doing. Probably even break more, especially with the heating machine. Which has a LOT of error codes that you can only look up in GSX - so no idea how regular people are gonna know what they‘re doing wrong. The process of using them is pretty much complicated and can be replaced by easier manual methods, the latter will be the go-to-way for newbies. And also, the machines itself are cheap, but at least in the case of the heating brackets you pay 100 bucks per piece, which brings up the cost to 500$ if you get just the 3 available ones right now. So „building up“ a set of tools like some people here suggested is gonna be pretty uneconomic. Just a few more reasons why I‘d stay away from these.

    An interesting point I want to add to the mix here in terms of pricing: These prices are only really valid if you have an Apple Store available to you to do these repairs. If you live in, let's say, New York I bet there are four Apple Stores within spitting distance. At that point, doing a battery swap at an official store is way easier. But I live in a medium-sized town in Sweden, and the nearest official Apple Store is (checks maps) roughly three hours away by car, so I'd have to drive six hours (there and back again) to even hand in my broken phone to get it fixed. Meanwhile, I could rent the gear, have it sent to me and do it myself and not spend six hours driving? That's... not super terrible, actually? The pricing still isn't amazing, but it provides a reasonable option.
    Sidenote: This program isn't available in Sweden yet, but I hope it will be, later down the line.

    • @soberfreund

      I was about to comment this but thank you for doing so already. This needs to be seen to filter out some wrongs in the video. Also, the last couple of days UA-cam is going mad about not being available to swap the charge port. Apple has never done a charge port only repair and (even as an ex-aasp employee) the real reason was never obvious. My best guess is it's just more time consuming and prone to issues (not lining up the dock connector or having issues putting the speakers down on the flex afterwards due to poor flex placement). Obviously everyone in the independent/unauthorized shops smirks at this but I could see the point Apple is making. If they don't offer the repair then they definitely won't offer the repair to the self service consumer. Annoying, and I've always dreaded to quote a customer 599 for a full swap just for a faulty charge port but it is what it is. Let's just hope this gets expanded in the future, as well as in-store/Apple-own repairs and for the self-service and Indies.

    This program might make more sense for people that live 2+ hours away from an Apple store. I remember being in Montana and looking to see how close an Apple store was for a repair. There weren’t any in the entire state at the time, and only one authorized repair store that said they would ship it away to be repaired.
    Locking it to the serial number means turn around would be similar to just shipping the device out to Apple (minus time without the phone being hours if you repair it vs sending it away)

    • @rolls_8798
      @rolls_8798 2 роки тому +7

      I don't really think that's an issue tbh, and there ARE hundreds of stolen iPhone that are now unusable and even more belonging to ordinary people that have been bricked. This just demonstrates that the fuckers who steal phones don't know or think about these restriction and it's almost always a spur of the moment sort of thing. It would be trivially easy to have a hardware key needed to authorize your phone to make it useless if stolen (except for parts). The real problem is that Apple actually profits from phones being stolen, since a stolen phone will need to be replaced, but they have to seem like they are preventing theft as much as possible.

    • @rebusxrex
      @rebusxrex 2 роки тому +2

      The problem with the hardware key is that it is redundant to the universally used IMEI system, requires each manufacturer to create their own system, raises interesting privacy issues, and still doesn’t get around the incentive to steal phones and parts to breakdown to provide to shops that don’t want to use authorize routes.

    You’re giving PTSD as you go over the internal repair process through GSX2. Working at a repair shop for 7 years, before and after AASP, I had learned and totally advocate for the tools and Apple provides, including the display press and battery roller. Mainly because they minimize any form of damage or dummy proof the repair on any basic level. The reason why third-party parts will never be 1:1 is because of the right grip they keep on the design, materials, and technology. At an AASP, consignment parts were hold onto until they were used for a repair. Most parts are serialized and entered into GSX and sent back. If the correct part was returned to them, but with a different serial, we got charged for the full cost, but if done properly, you’re paying for the consignment fee that’s well around 70% of the full cost. The shop will get the difference, which in a the grand scheme of it all, is very small. The profit comes from the repair of MacBooks and larger devices.

      Manufacturers' have started locking everything down that has electronic parts (this pevents self repair, as you don't have access to firmware or diagnostic services).
