Hi Jonathan, Thanks a lot for creating and improving this template for yEd! I wanna create my own layout for the nodes so I'm using your 2022 version google sheet w/ the data mapping from this video. However I'm getting "Family tree layout expects a family tree as its input. The current graph is not a family tree." error in the Layout/Family Tree option. I boiled it down to the software not liking that the family gets a custom template. I see that in the downloadable 2022 config file you no longer have visible family nodes, and that also seems to work fine for me, but not the method shown in this video (family node gets a template assigned). I kinda want a custom node for the families as I'd like to show marriage year there. Do you perhaps have an idea for a solution?
To whom it may concern, The solution was to set the correct color corresponding to the family nodes in the Family Tree layouter. yEd doesn't seem to care if the male/female colors are set right, but the incorrect family color seems to break the layouter.
Thank you for taking the time to invent this wonderful approach and sharing it. I'm trying to decide how to create a family tree site and I really don't want the bells and whistles of WordPress so I'd prefer to use Google Sites. Again, I'm just deciding which platform to use so I haven't immersed myself in all of the details so I'd like to ask what might be an obvious question which is "Can I use your methods to create a Family Tree then drop the result into a Google Sites page?" Thanks for your help.
Hi Mark, thanks for the question! I think the yEd family tree could be saved as a PDF file. Then the PDF could be embedded in a Google Sites page. Hope that helps with your project. Publii is a site generator to check out too. getpublii.com/
Love the "how to" I've been using your process for a few years, but I have found that I can't up load to Yed Graph more than 162 data entries. Any work around? Thank you again.
Happy to know you've been using this! I've uploaded files with thousands of records to yEd previously. You have to tell yEd what range to import. Have you set the import range to match the excel file?
Yes, photos can be added. See this yEd forum post with instructions for adding photos. yed.yworks.com/support/qa/13024/how-can-i-add-an-icon-to-a-label
Thanks for trying to make a family tree from my video! To use the day/month/year format, click the Edit menu➡Properties Mapper. In the Properties Mapper find the row with "Birth Date" change the "Conversion" column to "Automatic"
Is there any common reason that I would be unable to upload the excel file onto yed? It isn't lit up as an option when I click "open" after setting up the family tree palette.
Hi Madison, thanks for your interest in making family trees and thanks for the question. I’m not sure why importing the excel into yEd isn’t an option. I tried to simplify the process in this video “Create a Photo Family Tree with Google Sheets and yEd v. 3” ua-cam.com/video/qs8Ips159ts/v-deo.html Please try to follow the instructions on the updated video.
Hi Jonathan, I have my Google sheet ready as described in your video, but the yEd part is not matching what I see on the yEd website, which also isn't loading at times. Now that I have put this sheet together, is there another way to load it to a printable tree format?
@@uuoocl What version of yEd did you use in your video? The current version is 3.22 and I cannot reconcile it to the video. Sorry to appear impatient; my Mom is 92 and timing is key as to whether I can accomplish this or not.
@@uuoocl Hi Jonathan, thank you so much for getting this done! Meanwhile, I began and got stuck when trying to add the FamilyTree file to configuration in yEd. I work on a Mac desktop and it doesn't recognize the file type. Do you know what app will allow me to open the file and use it?
Thanks a lot for the video! So simple and brilliant idea how to visualize ANY relational data
Thank you
Clear explanations, good video. Thanks sir
Thanks for the feedback

thank you for the video and template I extremely loved it, but can I ask you if I can add more than one spouse for the same person?
okay I think I can figure it I saw the example thanks
Thanks for the comment. I’m happy you could figure out adding more than one spouse. Let me know if you have other questions.

Thanks for the video. I want to sort brother and sister with de birt date. Is that possible ?
Thanks for this video. This is really helpful for my project. Would you know if there are ways to add photos to the family tree?
Yes, photos can be added. See this yEd forum post with instructions for adding photos.

Patricia, thanks watching this video. I’m working on updating the instructions to make the process easier.

Hi where can i find a working template please ?
This version should work. ua-cam.com/video/qs8Ips159ts/v-deo.html
Template doesn't load.
Thanks for letting me know. I’m not certain why it isn’t loading.
A new version of the template will be released soon.
Consider using Google drawing and Google sheet for creating the family tree.
Thanks for the suggestion. Can you share an example of how to do that?
