lol! Some of my videos are performance videos, created to music, like this one. Then people write and say they wished I'd explained what I was doing as I painted! You would enjoy my "Dancing Brush" video, which is all performance to music and no talking. You can find it on my website, joyfulbrush dot com.
Hello Mexico! Brushes are handmade of different natural bristles. I use mostly hard bristle brushes like Mountain Horse Hair brush or Bamboo/Orchid brush. In this video I think I was using a small brush called Basic Hard or Basic Soft - very cheap but good for the subject because the bristles are short.
Lovely thought! I know just what you mean! My husband told me some years ago that I was more fun to be around when I was painting fulltime! Good enough reason for me!
Virginia Lloyd-Davies yes, vivid colors. you paint beautifully! I noticed someone else mentioned the "calligraphy style" in this painting. I had not noticed that ever before. very nice.
Es increíble, que aunque aparentemente, se ve como si se dieran unos cuantos pincelazos libres, se pueda crear un cuadro tan bello, te felicito Virginia.
Thanks, Catalina! Chinese brush painting is considered a 'performance art' not just a graphic art; that's why we learn to let the brush dance on the paper, with no pre-sketching.
Thanks for the kind comment. I always use some form of Asian paper, known in the West as "rice" or "mulberry" paper. For the roses I used a sheet of raw (that means unsized and absorbent) paper. Look online for xuan, shuen or even rice paper. Many places sell it.
@@VirginiaLloydDavies Thank you Virginia! I've reached out to Henry Li (the owner of Blue Heron Arts in L.A.), and he's been so helpful in answering all of the questions I have about materials, including the many different rice papers.
Very good question! Mostly it flows dynamically from the dance of the brush; however, there are certain compositional rules that I follow such as triangles, "one-long, one-short, one-medium", "host (main flower), honored guest (next sized flower), minor guests (buds, butterflies, bees)". Does this help?
Well what can I say! Someone has to pay for the Brushes, Paper and ink rsrs! And Thanks God for you, sharing with us your knowledge and technics in such a pleasant way! Talking about paper, may I ask: do you use the same Kind of paper as Sumi-ê ?
Bonjour Pierrette! Merci bien! J'utilise le papier riz. Le papier aquarelle n'absorbe pas. Pour ce genre de peinture il faut que l'eau et les couleurs pénètrent le papier.
Hi Virginia, Thanks for the reply, and so quickly too. I must ask you, you peaked my interest when I saw you were using silk dyes I have literally 9 quart sized bottles of H.Dupont French silk dyes that I have wanted so badly to see if I could use for something else until I got some more silk scarves to dye. I tell you Dupont dyes go a looooong long way, I would say those quarts will last me 5 life times. LOL :-) Now that being said when you use those to the stain your brushes any worse than watercolors? any special way you use them, do you dilute them agressively or full strength? Thanks so much for your reply. I still want to get down your way to meet you one day. Now that Spring/Summer has come I may do that.
Hi Mitchell, wow, yes, those bottles will last you a lifetime and a half! I would put less than half a teaspoon of each color in shallow containers. I would not dilute it. I would mix a little Dab 'n Stick glue with water and dip my brush in that before taking a very small amount of dye on the brush. I don't recall that the brushes were particularly stained. You have to paint ver quickly when using the dyes because they spread so easily.
Wow Virginia, at last another use for silk dyes, and they will still last me a lifetime and half! Do you always use rice papers? I have some Hot Press Professional grade watercolor papers here as well as Cold Press, I am sure the absorbancy is different from traditional rice paper since the WC papers are so much heavier most 140 lb some 300lb just trying to use things i have right now, however I have been to the sites that you suggested earlier and plan to order some rice papers as well. Thanks so much for all of your help and expertise! :-)
Hi beautiful and so talented. I'm in uk and need to know where to buy these brushes and quality. I previously bought some from China but all the hair fell of. Please advise.
runa begum there’s a great Chinese art supply shop in London: Guanghwa Co, 123 Shaftesbury Ave. You can also view their online catalog. Good luck and happy painting! - Virginia
What would be the best way for me to fill out the customs form? Say it's a gift? Value it at cost rather than retail? Say it's an educational tool? Any solutions you can think of? - Virginia
Well, my only concern with shipments to Brazil is customs. They can be a real pain !.(even if its is only a simple video, it would be considered an imported good...) .Nevertheless we can try . Paypal is fine for me. Lets see if it can be done! Once again thanks for your kind attention, Suely
Hi Virginia, I spoke with you back a while i am from close to Harrisonburg, VA and was wandering if you use regular watercolors or what they refer to as Chinese Watercolors which are said to be. between a Goucahe and watercolor?
Hi Mitchell. I use all sorts of things! On my Joyful Brush videos I am mostly using silk dyes; nowadays I use a combination of Marie's Chinese watercolors, Chinese chip colors and a few western watercolors. Ning Yeh at Oriental Art Supply lists the western colors that he thinks are good substitutes for the colors from China. Both OAS and Blue Heron Arts sell a range of paints, inks and dyes.
Hi Virginia, I would love to come down and visit you and your studio and see how you use these things. When I find myself with a vehicle again I will contact you and see when it would suit you. :-)
I would love to some time Virginia, since my accident in January it has left me without a car and thus no viable employment at this time. However, when you teach another class let me know, it is my hope that this too shall end sometime soon. Have a great weekend Virginia and thanks so much! :-)
Yes, I use a variety of so-called 'rice' papers. If you are on facebook, join my page there. I discuss what papers and brushes I am using on each painting, and often run a series of photos showing the development of a painting - particularly useful for painters of landscapes.
I have no idea!. I will check all the rules, it seams to me that up to $50 dollars I can bring it with no problems but I really need to check this out properly. I will let you know. I need to decide which one to chose first! it won´t be easy rsrs! Thanks a Lot Cheers Suely
Re paying to download my videos: I'd like to do that but so far it is not economically efficient, although the system is. The hosting companies charge an arm and a leg. However, if you go to my website joyfulbrush you can pay for the videos through PayPal and I can ship them out very efficiently! Let me know if this works for you.
Thanks for your kind comment! If you would like to see more of the paintings I am currently working on, you can find me on facebook dotcom/VirginiaLloydDavies. You don't need to be a facebook member to view the page. I put up gladioli, ducks and a landscape all in stages over the past week so you can see how the painting evolve.
very enjoying your brushing painting
Thanks, Joyce. I've been enjoying the music channels on your channel!
Those roses come to live!!!! Beautiful ❤️
Thank you, friend!
I love the way the blooms and buds resemble calligraphy.
Well spotted! All the strokes in Chinese brush painting are based on calligraphy.
Yes, and this is an especially pretty example of that.
As a chinese,I am shocked by your chinese brush painting. They are so beautiful . After watching your video inspire me to learn it. thank you.
I enjoyed watching so much. Thanks for not talking along! It needs no words.

I recommend checking Oriental Art Supply dot com or Blue Heron dot com. Both websites have lots of supplies and can advise you. Enjoy painting!
One last question: Can I buy your videos, by downloading them directly (like paying for an access link?) or something like it?
Hello Virginia, please explain a little bit how do you mount the paper on stiff board. With glue? or what? thanks for your reply.
You can wet-mount in the traditional way (corn starch or wheat paste) or you can use a special adhesive tissue and an iron. Hope this helps!
