Video over 8 years old and it's still the best guide on the subject. Many thanks.
Just to let people know everything is right on video besides the small ribbon cable. You do not have to remove the back top little ribbon cable,if you do your screwed. You will never get it back in. This video cost me a printer,oh well needed new one. Beleive me take your time on ribbon cables, and whatever you do. Do not remove little ribbon cable on the top back. Besides that it's a great video
hey thank you for the comment! i was about to pull out the small cables.
I wish I had read this comment before attempting to clean my printer before going to bed
No idea why the video says to do this..serves no purpose and is impossible to get back in
Hi, excellent video. I had attempted to clean the head on my WF2530 with the cleaning fluid but it didn't work and still left the black printing intermittently. I removed the head as per your video and then replaced it. After one nozzle check cycle using the printer I had perfect printing.
A few observations, when the print head is placed in the water make sure it doesn't allow water into the connector for the large flat ribbon cable, the water has to be very shallow. I also used a small syringe with a plastic tube on the end, I had one that I used to clean the heads with cleaning fluid, to push a small amount of warm water through the head from the top using very very little force.
To be on the safe side slide a thin piece of blotting paper into were the large ribbon cable goes after cleaning the head to ensure its dry. Also it's possible to put the ribbon cables behind their intended connections make sure they are in correctly.
What do you mean by "put the ribbon cables behind their intended connections make sure they are in correctly." ? =)
However, I submerged into the water as the video shows. Now my printer is flashing the lights and not much I can do.
@@cfvgd That they are not in place and you only think so !
Whether this works or not I have learned something today , so thank you for this video
This was very good. I wish I had listened to this one first which recommended NOT to unplug the skinniest electrical connection at the top as another video recommended that and I have been trying to plug that one back in for hours.
Excellent Video! Now my WF-2540 is printing flawlessly.
Great vid! Helped me a lot. DO NOT unplug the small flat cable on top, ONLY the second one and the big one.
Hi, as per video I did unplug the small flat cable and i cannot put it back in... Any advice guys... Also, the small flat cable is creased so I cannot put it back in using the plastic flap attached to it... Help me please
I wish he would talked about this in the video, thump down on this video!
XP-322 has same head and I used this video to clear mine. Many thanks!
A good video on solving a major problem for Epson printers, BUT, MY GOD WHY DIDN'T YOU WARN US TO NOT REMOVE THE SMALL CABLE IN THE BACK!!
I just don't know how but I plugged it.😂 Just try with your finger and push a bit till you get the hole!
as a veteran printer repairman , you will need either a long thin needle nose plier & or a grip-type tweezer.... when inserting it back in,
make sure the METAL SIDE contacts the circuit board !
@@xrtyty Glad you mentioned tweezers, was about to give up until I read this. It does actually say to remove only the two cables so that'll teach me for not paying attention 🤦♂️
How does that back cable magically apear plugged in!!!! 😱😱😱😱
That was so difficult. I had to grab the electric taped to get the flex cable out of the way first.uusing electric tape I taped a flathead screwdriver to the notch under the blue stiff part of the back cable and gently with my fingers to stabilize I pushed it in. It went in fairly easy. The bottom one was crazy I had to flip the printer on its side. After turning it on I had to wait a few hours for all of the colors to print brightly. What a headache!
Thank you good sir. Worked amazing. DO NOT REMOVE THE FAR BACK RIBBON. WATCH THE VIDEO CAREFULLY.
as a veteran printer repairman , you will need either a long thin needle nose plier & or a grip-type tweezer.... when inserting it back in,

It was off when I saw it!!! 😫😫😫😫
Hello did you find how to put it back? Any video of disassembly maybe? I removed it also...
You can put it back thru the back of printer by removing the white that holds the all the white ribbons. You will have to disconnect the two big ribbon connected to the scanner board. Put them to the side. Slide back the printhead carriage then you could see the connector thru the little slot. I was able to connect the small flat cable.
Great help. The nozzle from my printer was clogged. By watching the video could take it out. Wash it with water and now works perfect again.
MY GOD! ... I disconnected the top cable too, like everyone else here...BUT I WAS ABLE TO GET IT BACK IN without disassembling the printer further. Here's how: I rubberbanded a pair of tweezers shut as hard as seemed reasonable, and inserted the blue tip of the cable while prying the tweezers open with a knife. this let me maneuver the tweezers and thus the cable from the very furthest end of the tweezers - providing just enough visibility and and space for my fingers. i gently edged my way through this and was able to insert it. then i cut off the rubberband with an exacto knife and unraveled it. then i exhaled. and they said it was impossible. holy. fucking. hell.
holy hell thank you so much for posting this! I tried for an HOUR to get that thing back in and your method worked! bless you!
Wrapping the tweezers with a rubber band was an excellent idea and worked for me. Unfortunately once I tested the printer after all this it still was missing lines while printing. Guess I'll replace this $45 epson with a $19 cannon printer...
STOP, DO NOT REMOVE SMALL WHITE CORD. If you do then you must unscrew the screw on the right hinge on the inside then push on the 2 clips on the left and lift that plastic piece. Then you will have better visibility to use your finger or tweezers to get it back in. Otherwise you may have to disassemble a lot more.
I got the small cable back in but it now says printer error see documentation
Found the easy way to put third tape back in case you disconnect it like me and most people here. To put it back you have to take of scanner it's easy and there is white plastic holding these 3 tapes. Just disconnect these 3 tapes and remove plastic so you will have enough space to put finger and connect thist tape to the back of carriage then put every think back together. It took me 5min to do it. Unfortunately my print head get broken after spend few days in IPA now it don't print at all.
Helpful video. My printer is a Epson Workforce 435. Very similar to this video. Thank you very much!
I confirm this works (beautifully) for an Epson Strylus SX235W (I fitted a rubber tube and used a syringe to squirt (hot) water (GENTLY) through each of the (hmm I'm blanking on what you call them _ posts?) multiple times until the water comes out not only clean but in a 0.5 metre long jet comprising multiple very fine streams of water.
This is perfect except when removing the white cables please indicate to only move the front small one on top. two cables were bent together so I dislodged a tiny one behind the cartridge. So after all the other steps I couldn't for the life of me re attach the tiny circuits because they were lodged behind too much of the mechanisms. My printer now has a fatal error. Otherwise, very helpful.
Thank you so much for this video!
This video by far is a Keeper,Thanks!
worked a charm. i used some cheap aftershave once it was out and the model wasnt the same but close enough. thanks
Good video but it wasn't easy to just put the print-head into the hot water, I dipped also the circuit board. Shitty disposable printer. If they put some screws into the print-head, it was much easier to disassemble the circuit board from the rest.
Make damned sure you guys don't get the cable contacts wet, if you do and you restart your printer, most likely it will be shot. Just about everyone of the comments regarding problems after "cleaning" can be contributed to the cable connections being wet when the printer was restarted or the cables not being installed properly. If you have gotten the cable connections on the print head wet, you can use a can of compressed air and a blow dryer to dry them COMPLETELY prior to reconnecting the cables. This is very IMPORTANT if you don't want to fry your printer!!!
After cleaning the head of my WF2540, I started the printer and everything looked fine. After it started moving the print head to the right of the printer, it suddendly went off.
I am not able to switch it on now.
I had read your comment before cleaning, and that's why I put some tape on the connector before cleaning it. I also tried to dry it after the cleaning.
Do you know if there's still a chance to repair my printer? Any fuse that I could replace?
Thanks in advance
Mine was shot! I thought I had dries it completely. I even warmed it up with a blow dryer to make sure it was dry. When I heard it "sizzling" I reached over to shut it off and it cratered just as got to it. I was told it would need a new print head so I just bought a new printer. It doesnt take but a minuscule amount of moisture to fry it.
@Mark Simoes :The same thing just happened to me. If you found a solution please share with me!
Unfortunately same fried-printer happened to me too! even though I blow dried it quite well for 3 times 30" each, and inside the cable-connector really well.
When i turned it on it started fine for 1-2 minutes at which point it just shut down (leaving the printer head in a mid-position, meaning it just went off power, not intentionally stop). I removed the head again and plug the printer but to no avail - there seems to be no resuscitation, no power-on! I ll find a 2nd hand head to try. Anyone can propose a solution to that problem? is there a circuit inside the printer that has blown off? Or a fuse? or?????
Damn, I also fried mine, even though I used the compressed air (I know, it can push moisture in, but it seemed so dry). I was close to using 99% alcohol to dry it, but I wasn't sure if it would affect the head in some way. Now I am wishing I had gone the alcohol route. I wish these circuits were made a little more robustly. Sucks that I finally got around to fixing it, found this great video, got it all done, and then destroyed the freaking thing via the power button.
Hi! Thank you so much for the tutorial!! I did everything exactly how u said in the video and now my printer is saying "Paper jam. Remove jammed paper." And on the top it says W-02... What can I do?
probably a paper sensor along the path of the sheet is broken or out of position. Try removing all the ink cartridges and reinstalling
them one at a time and moving the carriage over to the far left then back in position
Ok, I'll try it... Gracias! ;)
Did you get this fixed? I am having the same issue.
@@viandant5 Hi I followed your tutorial and am encountering the same issue with the printer reporting paper jam. I checked for sensors and could not find anything obvious. Could you please help? Thanks.

How to remove the print-head from Epson stylus cx5500 ? will be thankful if you upload .
I just managed to do it. However the black still misses a line. Maybe need to soak the head longer. Its tricky getting those connecters back in.
Thankyou so much indeed.
This is a life saver.
My printer is not printing anything at all now - any tips? It came up with a 0x9E errors but I was able to fix that by putting the flat cable in. It was able to print with blue perfectly before, not not anymore! Do you know what thus could be? Perhaps I didn't screw the screws in tight enough? Please help, I'm desperate for the printer to work!!!
Had two Epsons fail in the last 2 years. Why do they have a head cleaning feature? Does it ever work? Didn't on mine. Replaced both with HPs which I have had much better luck with.
I Removed the very back cable and now I cannot put it back. Any suggestions???

Thanks for the video. Was able to disassemble and reassemble without trouble. However, this wf-2540 printer now gives a paper jam error and I can't clear it. I've disassembled it again, and hoping the printer heads just need to dry out a bit. I've tried everything else for paper jam errors from your videos and suggestions from around the web.
May be a paper sensor is broken and must be changed
@@viandant5 I found that it was a fuse on the logic board, it was likely the result of a short in the port for the ribbon cable. Luckily I am pretty handy with electronics and was able to solder on a new fuse. Thanks for the help!

Very good video!
I have an Epson 835 and the issue is not clogged heads. It freezes upon powering up and the display flashes the message "A Printer Error has occurred". I tried some things suggested by the JustAnswer site, but they didn't work. When I free the print head and move it to the left and turn on the power, it tries to start normally. The print head slowly moves to the right. However, when it reaches the ink reservoir area, the rectangular sponge, it bumps up against it the pad holder and triggers the error. I looks like it should clear the pad, but the pad will not stay down when I push it down. I wonder if it is gummed up under this pad. However it is not easily accessible. I do not see a way to unscrew the plastic cover that prevents access to the pad. Do you or does anyone reading this have a suggestion?
There is a sensor on the left of the print-head carriage, may be it's dirty or broken. try to remove and reinstall all ink cartridges
I removed the small cable can you help me?
you have to remove the whole print-head group, removing first the side plastic covers of the printer but it's long and not so easy to do

can i did change Heads of Epson sx 125 to Epson Xp 312 ???
no, they are different
Thanks man u r the best
Hallo, thank you very much for the tutorial!
I did it exactly how you said, but now my printer is saying "error turn power off and then on again." What did I did wrong? ;(
Check the flat cable, it it connected to the printer? Is it damaged? Verify if the printer holder moves freely. In case you used a cleaning liquid disconnect the electrical cable and wait some hours. Maybe the printhead is wet
The flat cable is connected properly, and seems to be undamaged.
The printer holds moves freely.
The error occurs at the same beginning, the printer head doesn't even start to move, when the error occurs.
I removed printer head and installed it again, and then I had this the same error, but when the printer head moved to the right side. So I removed and installed printer head again, and now it didn't move like at the beginning ;/
I've waited several hours and shook the nozzle to see if any water was shooting out. It's not, and I left it for several more hours. I've plugged in the cables correctly, and the printer holder moves freely. I receive the same "printer error - turn off and turn on again" message when i turn my printer on. What else can i do before I throw this sucker away?!
Did you ever get this fixed? I'm receiving the same message!
My blue on Epson xp-322 suddenly stopped printing and non of the usual thing I tried solved the problem. I followed this to the letter but after putting everything back together I received a few error messages which I solved, then it wouldn't turn on which I again solved but now I'm getting "Ink out error" Retry set I/C Any suggestions please
Try to remove the ink cartridges, close the cover, it will give an error message. turn off the printer, turn it on again, resinstall the cartridges
@@viandant5 Thank you but alas has not worked although tried a few times
Went through the whole process and cleaned the head in water twice. So much work for no results at all. I guess it's just been sitting too long clogged that the head is gone. SO MUCH ink came out of it I thought for sure I'd get at least SOME lines back.
I'm done with epson. This is my 3rd Epson printer and all 3 have had nothing but clogging problems annihilating cartridge after cartridge of ink trying to keep the head clean. And now with how downright illegally aggressive Epson has gotten with updates to guarantee you can use nothing but their overpriced OEM ink I'll never purchase Epson again. Even the supreme court came down on printer manufacturers for this practice and Epson still spits in our faces. Time for a multi billion dollar fine to get them honest.
hi, I have broken the yellow head, could you help me?
if the yellow print-head is broken, you can only change it.
i covered all the part of head with hot water and not only the down part. now my printer shows an error. is this mistake irreversible?
if the water was not too hot I think it's not a problem May be there is a problem with the flat cable or the reassembling of the printìhead
+viandant5 the water was very hot but the head got cleaned very well. i have an error e 01 .. have no idea why it appears and what did wrong. maybe because of boiled water i destroyed something..
The error e-01 is related to an empty ink cartridge, not to the print-head
+viandant5 ive changed the ink but it doesnt start at all. the error appears at the very beggining before i print or scan something..
may be your ink cartridge is defective, or the circuit of the printer does not make a good contact with the cartridge. try push down the cartridge with the fingers for some seconds. that error is not related to the print-head
You should have told us not to remove the small cable in the back. I will have to throw my printer out now.
I removed only 2 cables on 3. I cleaned the print head and unclog it, i made care about just cleaning the print head only, and reconnect all. Waiting 12 hours before a print test. Now my the printer print nothing :-( , white sheet only :-(
If someone had a solution???
Pls Would you make tutorial on Epson B-500DN

Still not working properly. But at least my hands are dirty now.
that's the way to go
i removed the flat ribbon thats on the back of the box carrying ink cartridges and the print nozzle. Its not the flat ribbon to the nozzle, and not the flat ribbon that goes to the ink cartridges. Its the flat cable that goes on all the way on the back. And I can't put it back in. Anyone have any ideas?

Sadly, I can't get the three screws to unscrew. Any ideas? 😁
More force!
i accidentally removed the back ribbon flat cable any body know how to put it back
any luck. i did the same thing
i did too but i fixed it by taking the whole freaking metal frame out and taking the print head out.
Pau Gasolina I can't figure out how to get the metal thing out.
I used a precision screwdirver flat head tip and took a tiny piece of ducttape, I placed the tiny screwdriver head against the reinforced blue plastic..and then wrapped duct tape around it and the wire. This has to be loose enough so the screwdriver can pull away after the cable is placed into the slot.
FYI: this is a bitch to do.
I was fortunate enough to use a eyebrow tweezer and plug it back in, of course only after I had positioned my hand a certain way and kept re-adjusting the strip several times
Yes, major bitch to do
How to open 805 Epson printer head. Please send me detail with vidio.
Sorry I don't have video on this argoument
LOL
I don't understand, you said to put the nozzles under water but you put the metal plate side down, I would think the metal would be the part you want to avoid in the water...which way is correct?
The nozzles are the metal plate
Into hot water or cold water?
hot water, but not boiling water
viandant5 ok after the method I powered the printer on and it was all good and when it was warming up the machine there comes a hissing sound you know. When that sound started to come it cut the power off and I can't turn it on right now. I check the cartridge flex at the side and it was a little wet. Shall I wait and try again later or is it dead?
I think the water was too hot, you can try again later but probably the cartridge is defective
viandant5 but when I first plugged it in. It started working after a while it stopped
Now I make a USB connection to pc but pc doesn't recognize the printer
"place the nozzles of the print-head into the water"
Me: alrighty
*begins placing metal plate side into the water with nozzle-looking things pointing up*
Me: WTF!?
Good instructions but what a pain in the ass putting those cables back in
got mine on sale for $50.00, even that was far more then it's worth. These are junk, ink dries so fast and is too much trouble to try and clean out. All the videos show a syringe and tube that you don't just find at the nearest CVS. Ridiculous.
CAUTION !!! Don't remove the rear most, upper ribbon cable or you will be sorry. It is so recessed you'll never get it back in. I did, miraculously, by removing the lid cover and using 90 degree needle nose pliers. Put it all back together after cleaning the head and went to do a pattern check. Nothing happened, and then the screen went dark. Never came back. Must have burned out the power supply or motherboard.......oh mother !! Same thing happened on the last one I tried to disassemble and clean. These Epsons are touchy as hec. Less problems doing deep brain surgery.
I accidently removed the ribbon you're talking about. and I've been wracking my brain as to how to fix it. how did you remove the lid cover? Was it hard? FML
To remove the print-head carriage you have to dismantle the printer, starting from side panels
I know it's been a year but can you tell me how to get the lid cover off my Epson WF 2530, it keeps feeding paper through the machine and 3/4 of the way out onto the front tray but doesn't print anything on it then says paper out or incorrectly loaded, load paper. Takes like 10 to 20 times to print one page from the pc, prints fine if I want to copy or fax so I think it's the feed arm or feed roller but can't get to them. I'd really appreciate just knowing how to get the top off to get to things. TY in advance
printheads it's like repairing clock machines !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Give your life to Jesus Christ. Believe and pray:
*"God, I know that I am a sinner and unless you save me I'll be lost forever. I believe that Jesus Christ is the true Son of God, died on the cross for my sins and arose on the 3rd day. I accept Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen."*
Just not sure about it? Then say aloud,
*"Jesus Christ, if you are the Truth, then reveal yourself to me."*
What do you have to lose?
So, nowhere near as simple as Canon then?!!!
Damn I removed the large flat cable the smaller and the smallest to... damn I can't put smallest back in place it's on the back 🤔
More damn for not reading the comments before.
HI PLS HELP ME I CANT UNDERSTAND HOW TO DETERMINE PRINT HEAD ALLIGNMENT LINES IS IT NORMAL?

i forgot to make attention and now my printer is broken
I've been trying to fix my printer for hours now and I'm so frustrated. I just read your comment and can't stop laughing!
Same here. Stupid little ribbon cable.
Haha broke my printer :D Was about to get a new one anyways, hate this one. Stupid ink dries.. Will get an lazer printer. Never will i support epson again :P
The ink dries because you don’t use it enough, it’s very easy to clean as per this video, laser printers are great on plain paper, but don’t print nice glossy photos.
Thank you very much for this video. Very detailed step-by-step instructions. In the end, I could not get the print-head to unclog, short of using the tube and syringe method in other youtube videos. So I just swapped print-heads out from another XP-400 and it works just fine. Thanks again!
Be very careful trying this method, I tried this on an XP-446, which had a very similar setup. It seemed like it would work -- I got all of the parts disassembled successfully. The board with the electrical contacts gave me a little trouble, but eventually came out. The print heads gave off a *lot* of ink when soaked. After I had everything reassembled and reattached, I noticed I had stretched the bends in the flat cables a little too much, and they were dragging on the printer frame when the assembly moved. As I tried to bend them back into place, *disaster* -- the small cable in the back came out, and as many have noted it's incredibly difficult to put back. I removed the plastic piece that ran along the back of the print assembly track for better access, and after a while even tried the method mentioned below using tweezers/rubber band/knife, which seemed promising until the ribbon cable ripped at the end when I tried to reinsert it. I should have read a little further about disassembling the printer even more, but I was really tired of dealing with this printer already. Now the printer is officially the complete piece of junk it pretty much always was. And I had just wasted money on new (now useless) ink catridges as well.
Best repair instruction video on how to clear clogged Epson printer head without buying fancy chemicals. Thank you!
I confirm that this method works on WF-2540. But at the end I needed to run the head cleaning from the printer's menu around 4-5 times to get perfect prints. Thank you very much for this video!
EXTRA CLEAN!!! I followed the video but after soaking, like the cleaning kits, I took a syringe with a tube on the end and flushed all four nozzels with hot water and window cleaner til it came out clear. Works great! The ribbon wires can be tough to get back in but make sure they are in snug. If it's loose it's not all the way in.
WARNING -Before you remove any of the ribbons- read the comments!!! Like many on here I removed ALL the ribbons and the rear one is impossible to reattach. The video is good apart from making it clear you should only remove two of the ribbons. It would be helpful to make the video clearer showing how to reattach the fiddly ribbons. Off to buy another printer.
Make Attention!

@@ivantvrtko37 thank you!
The small ribbon cable in the back can be put back IF YOU SLOWLY TAKE YOUR TIME (LOL, I DID NOT AT FIRST). push the carriage toward the right side until you can see the white "mini usb looking" slot behind the carriage. Then take a pair of 8" curved hemostats and attach it to the end of the ribbon cable so that the blue part does not move left or right. You will also have to angle the ribbon cable so that it goes straight in and this may take a few tries to get the angle right. If it takes more than that YOU ARE IN TOO BIG OF A HURRY. The left finger hole on the handle (for me) was touching or close to touching the metal wall. Angle the hemostats so that the ribbon goes straight into the opening. Do this slowly. When you feel a little resistance and the ribbon is seated, pull the hemostats back and the ribbon should stay. I BEAT MY HEAD INTO THE WALL AS MANY TIMES AS YOU DID AND THE RIBBON DID NOT GO IN UNTIL I TOOK MY TIME AND SLOWLY GUIDED THE CABLE IN . You may want to use a flashlight to see just where the slot is and you may have to guide it to where you thing the opening is. IT will work...
Excellent Tutorial, worked with my Epson XP-440 perfectly.
Did everything step by step and was able to unclog my black side it was really clogged. I put everything back with ease no issue with cables, I’m use to cables in impossible areas. After everything was put back I connected my printer booted the bitch up and wasn’t able to do anything, kept getting message warming up, after about 30secs Printer made a click and died! WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TOO FAST! Clips on printer head cover major hard trouble, Clips on Contact plate a major son-of- a bitch, ribbon cables hard as hell to get back in contact plate. You need to light the area much better! Plastic pieces are real junk plastic, breaks easily.
How do I take the top half of the printer off to easily get to the printer head?
